5) Are mice entry spots located in “sensitive” areas of the house? If the mice enter or frequent sensitive parts of the home, such as near expensive carpeting or upholstery, then you may not want to risk blood splatters using a Snap Trap. Equally though, there is a risk of mice rolling over Glue Traps onto those surfaces. An Electronic Trap or a Baiting Station might work best in such situations.
If using snap traps, place the traps perpendicular to the wall so that the baited end is touching it. This forces the animals to touch the bait platform if they want to continue along the same path as they’ve been using before.
Rats and mice can do a lot of nibbling in their relatively short lives. What’s really surprising is despite all that nibbling and gnawing, a rat’s stomach is approximately half the size of a human thumb. Adult female rats weigh about 225 grams, and males weigh up to 267 grams. As a result, they can eat approximately 15 to 20 grams per day. What are they filling their little rodent tummies with? A variety of edibles:
ok, so we live in a wooded area… recently one of the vacant lots next door was cleared and we had an influx of rats and mice in the attic and everywhere else. we don’t have food out, or pets, nor small children… so we went to war thinning their numbers. we’ve done the ‘pet/child safe’ trap, the standard wood-spring trap and now this one. this one is easy to set, reusable and does its job for the most part. i say that because with mice, they were dead on the snap. the rats… well they unfortunately suffer a bit because of their much larger size.
For the final review: If you are killing rats these may work as Ralph was about the size of a large rat. You may want to anchor them to the ground though, and for that I’ll take off one star. If going for larger game, you may want to put a GPS tracking device on these if you wish to get the traps back. As for killing chipmunks, I’d give these traps 1 star as I had a horrible experience and have decided to make a peace treaty with my chipmunk friends instead.
Electric rat zappers are a handy way to safely kill rodents and there are several different models on the market. In principle all of these traps work using the same mechanism so the difference between them lies in the details. Here is a breakdown of the differences between the products along with what I think is the best electric rat zapper.
I bought 9 of these rat traps and only caught 1 rat. the traps are always blinking and guess what NO MOUSE!! food is gone lights blinking like something is in there…fresh batteries every time. waste of money
The Raticator Electronic Rat Trap works extremely well and can safely be used indoors around children and pets. It’s our #1 pick for indoor rat and mice control, and the only trap that kills both mice and large rats.
This is the second round of a dozen traps. The desert heat trashes them over 6 months…however, they are the easiest to trap with. I’ve never even baited them. Never! Just place on known rat areas and they work fine without the mess. I had tried other brands, and poison…didn’t work.
I know this is an old post, but you actually want the stairway to heaven in line with the wire. The vermin will attempt to high wire in an effort to get to the bait. If it doesn’t make it to the can, it loses its balance and will try to gain foot on the can. Then it’s bye bye Ratzilla!
It’s important to re-state, though, that I used it only after I’d spent time getting rid of a large infestation of rodents in my chicken run. Until you have the population under control this trap won’t be of much use because it can only kill one at a time.
The trap might have only caught the tail of the rodent, moving the trap when the rat ran away with it. Another possibility is that a larger predator found the rat in the trap dead and took it–trap and all–to another location to eat it, leaving just the trap behind.

When an infestation persists, one of the more effective methods of elimination involves getting rats accustomed to traps before setting them. To introduce a trap, place it in an active area but don’t set it. Allow rats to feed off this “safe” trap for a day or two. Once the critters have accepted this object as part of their regular turf, bait the trap again, but set it up to snap the next rat that crosses its path.
Rats tend to be cautious of new objects in their territory. Pre-bait your trap to get your rat used to it before you set it up for a catch. To pre-bait your trap, tie the trap doors open and place bait inside. Position your trap and wait about a week before setting it up for a catch.
In that sense, they won’t necessarily approach an unfamiliar object or trap, especially if they see that another rat has already been captured. Some people also keep mice and rats as pets (in cages), so one must take this into account when setting any type of trap around the house. Doing so will keep a pet rat safe from harm while only baiting and trapping the animals that shouldn’t be in the area.
Rats that regularly find their way to our dwellings are indeed annoying and nasty pests. Unfortunately, they can surmount all the hurdles and gnaw through everything to get into seemingly impenetrable, hard-to-reach places. Moreover, they transfer serious diseases, attack humans and pets, contaminate food and make a mess. Rat control measures involve traditional and modern methods of extermination, such as sealing up the homes, using rat predators, snap traps, poisonous baits, rat zappers, glue boards and others. In all cases, the best option is to start from the removal of mess (where they find their shelter), water and food sources. You can purchase different types of snap traps or make your own homemade rat trap to get rid of coming pests.
Electronic Mouse Traps: Battery powered, these devices use bait to attract and catch the mouse inside them. Then, they kill the critter by electrocuting it. The current delivers a humane kill, especially when compared with other types of rat traps available today. So, if you are an animal activist, then this model is the right one for you!
Melted, it has the consistency of latex paint, and solidifies quickly as it is poured on the cardboard squares I chose to use. It doesn’t lose it’s “stickiness”, and is way more economical than buying individual traps. However, I’m not going to pay $90+ per gallon. Hope this helps.

If you don’t want to kill rodents in your house, then it’s a great choice for you. This is the best live rat trap which you can find. Its clever design allows you to catch even light weight animals like a small mouse.
Bait your traps before placing them. Once you’ve selected and bought your traps, you’ll need to bait them (with the exception of poison traps, which use the poison itself as bait.) Apply your bait to the designated spot on the trap according to any instructions provided with it. Typically, for snap traps, the bait will need to go on the flat “platform” that sits opposite the swinging arm. Glue traps, on the other hand, often have a peg in the middle that bait can sit on. Live traps usually have a similar platform for the bait in the center. Your bait should be a small, thimble sized amount of a food that’s appetizing to rats — don’t use too much or it will be easier for the rat to take it without springing the trap. Just a few common examples of rat bait are listed below:
Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights? Read more.
