5) Are mice entry spots located in “sensitive” areas of the house? If the mice enter or frequent sensitive parts of the home, such as near expensive carpeting or upholstery, then you may not want to risk blood splatters using a Snap Trap. Equally though, there is a risk of mice rolling over Glue Traps onto those surfaces. An Electronic Trap or a Baiting Station might work best in such situations.
Update: reduced my rating from ***** (5) to ** (2) as the trap broke after the first use (kill). The plastic latch mechanism cracked, presumably when it caught the first rodent, and will no longer set. It was literally set 1x and used 1x (correctly per instructions) and broke.
A snap trap is a wooden, metal, or plastic trap with a powerful snap hinge intended to kill rodents instantly on contact. Snap traps are typically used with some form of bait to lure the rodent to the trap. A snap trap is different from a multiple-catch or live-catch trap. Snap traps require you to dispose of the dead rodent, whereas multiple-catch or live-catch traps allow humane capture and release of mice.
If you find the mouse trap bait is gone, but the trap did not snap, the trigger may not be sensitive enough. Place a small amount of sticky or gooey mouse trap bait like peanut butter in the bait station. Then push a nut or other tidbit in the middle of the peanut butter. This forces the mouse to stop on the platform & apply more pressure to the trigger while removing the nut. This method will prevent the mouse from just grabbing your mouse bait and running away to safety.
No doubt, the best way to catch a canny rat with a sticky trap is by putting some bait – bacon or peanut butter – inside a circle of the trap. Rats will have to cross the tape to get the food and will be caught.
use about a half gallon of old (smelly) cooking oil in a large open glass container ( a vase or cookie jar ). The oil should be about two – three inches from the top. Secure a timber ramp from the ground to the top of the glass container. The rats will fall in but will not get out due to the slippery oil and glass sides. GUARANTEED to work and to go on working…..
For example, they are made of strong materials, come in simple designs, are easy to use and kill the rats quickly and in a humane manner. They are also versatile and suitable for both indoor and outdoor application whether in the home, office, restaurant, food store, garage and other places.
For major rat infestations, call an exterminator. While it’s possible to get rid of lots of rats with your own traps, sometimes, it’s best to leave the problem to professionals. If you don’t feel comfortable trapping rats yourself or you believe your infestation is too large for you to control, call a pest control expert as soon as possible. Most pest control companies offer experienced exterminators trained to use a wide range of solutions, including mechanical traps, kill and seal traps, ultrasonic repellants and rodenticides. Signs of a major infestation include:
The most common type of rat trap is the classic snap trap made by Victor. The trap is so popular because it is cheap and effective. Victor makes two versions of their classic trap; Standard and Professional.
A: Place the trap along the wall where rodents primarily travel or where you have seen signs of rodent activity. Rats are wary critters and they’ll initially avoid anything new in their environment. Good news is we’re smarter than they are! It may take a few days or nights for the first rat to enter your trap, but be patient!
T-Rex rat trap – excellent solution that gives superior rat capture. Safer to-use and easy to set than current snap traps, T-rex trap can be placed directly in a rat bait station. You can use baits – like nuts or some peanut butter – in the trap to bait. Position the trap along walls, near baseboards or in places where rats are likely to travel.
I gave it 4 stars because occasionally the rat gets away. Sometimes the trap is sprung with no sign of a rat, and sometimes there’s a rat arm inside the trap. It makes me feel a little sad to think of the rats with crutches and prosthetic legs. I assume, in their world, it’s hard to get a job as a chef, lab rat, running in a rat race, or zodiac model with a missing front leg. Although, I hear the rats in this area have a strong union with excellent health care.
Euthanize any rats that are injured but not dead. Unfortunately, lethal traps do not always work perfectly — occasionally, you may find a trapped rat that is maimed and unable to escape, but still living. In this case, the most humane thing to do is often to put the animal out of its misery by quickly and cleanly killing it. Releasing an injured rat into the wild is likely to cause it to die a relatively more painful death from starvation or being eaten.
Besides using peanut butter, there are a few other tried and true ways to effectively trap rats and quickly spare your home of any further damage. For example, you can place cardboard tunnels over the rat traps to create an enclosed space that will attract rats to the peanut butter trap even more so than they already are (if that’s even possible). It is also important to note that rats are very shy creatures that take a while to warm up to new surroundings, so don’t be worried if it’s been a week or so and nothing has happened. Rats will have to first grow accustomed to the traps before they will approach them. So wait patiently, because soon the rats will give in to the temptation of the peanut butter.
If you have average-sized rats and a need for less than 20 kills per set of batteries, get the Rat Zapper® Classic electronic rat trap, equipped with a large chamber size. However, if you are dealing with larger rats, consider buying the Rat Zapper® Ultra (sold separately), equipped with the largest chamber size available and suited to kill more than 20 rats per set of batteries.
The newest type of rat traps are electronic. Most of these are made to use food as bait, but hormone drops or other non-food rat attractants can also be used. Simply put, they are all shaped much like a large can, with one side open and one side closed. The rat goes into this “can” to investigate, and once inside, a powerful electric current kills them.
Known for the most innovative rodent control products on the market, Victor Electronic Rat Trap is the only rat trap with a patented 3-plate design to prevent escapes. Easy to use, the trap is simply baited, placed against the wall and turned on. The trap uses advanced smart circuit technology to sense when a rodent enters the units. Once the rodent is inside, the system delivers a humane, high-voltage shock to effectively kill the rat or mouse in seconds. A green indicator light illuminates when a rat has been exterminated and is ready for removal. Rodents can then be dumped directly into the trash for no-touch, no-view mouse control. Since rats have the ability to restart their hearts after an electrical shock, the Victor Electronic Rat Trap applies shock for 2 minutes ensuring high kill rates. Additionally, the Victor Electronic Rat Trap is the only trap that automatically resets after an irregular escape. Safe for use anywhere in the home, the Victor Electronic Rat Trap is ideal for attics, garages, basements, sheds, and kitchens. A lifetime investment, the Electronic Rat Trap is easy to clean and can be reused indefinitely. For effective rat control, one set of 4 ‘C’ batteries will eliminate up to 50 rats, and a red light indicates when batteries need replacing.
My neighbor refuses to clean up after her dog and there is dog feces on her patio. I saw a large dark furry creature scurry across my patio at dusk last night heading in her direction. Do dog droppings attract rats?
Apply a small amount of peanut butter, bacon, dry pet food or nuts to the yellow pedal on the trap as shown. Be sure to use a Q-tip, toothpick or another tool to bait so your scent is not transferred onto the trap.
To reset the trap, we recommend cleaning the metal plates with a hydrogen peroxide solution. Please turn the trap off and remove the batteries before cleaning. Once the trap has dried, we recommend re-baiting (following the instructions above) and placing the trap against the wall in an area where rats have been seen.
Kness Ketch-all Multiple Catch Rat Trap – The ‘Worlds Best Mousetrap”, the Kness Ketch-all Multiple Catch Trap captures mice and smaller rats. It is not designed to capture large rats. The story behind this trap is that Mr. Kness developed it for his child’s school in the early 1920’s. The school had a mouse problem that they could not control. Mr. Kness, being an engineer, developed the world’s first repeating mouse trap. As the story goes, it eliminated the mice and Kness Manufacturing was born.
Best suited for small mouse infestations and if you just want to see if you really do have mice up there or not. The history behind this traps means its most effective at what’s required – killing mice fast.

I put a bit of peanut butter on the center plastic bit and put this under my drawer. Finally caught the mouse that’s been running around my house for weeks! We haven’t found out where it comes in from, but at least we know that we can catch them! Thank you for these awesome traps! My brother and I took it to the next town over and released it in front of the forest. The little fellow couldn’t wriggle off. We used dishwasher soap and some water to set it free. No more rat poo around the house! Mom finally relieved. No more skittering noises in the night! Adios, El Magnifico!
Affix a string to the bottle. With your bottle oriented so that the hinge is on the surface of the table, you should now have a bottle with two skewers through its upper part (one just to the left and one just to the right of the place you made the cut). Turn the bottle over so that the hinge is on the top. Unscrew the cap and place a string as long as the bottle approximately one inch down through the mouth. Screw the cap back on tightly with the string still partway inside. Give the string a slight pull to ensure it is snugly in place beneath the bottle cap.
If you encounter an animal who is stuck to a glue trap, place a few drops of cooking oil or baby oil in between the glue and the animal, and gently work the animal free. Be sure to keep oil use to a minimum, otherwise oiled animals can perish from exposure later on. While removing the animal from the glue, slide tissue or paper underneath freed body parts to prevent them from getting re-stuck. Once free, active and alert rodents can be released outdoors during good weather within a one-block radius of where they were discovered. Lethargic or imperiled animals, or animals caught during extreme weather, should be rushed to a local veterinarian or wildlife rehabilitator or call PETA for guidance.
Once you know your rat, whether you are trapping a brown rat (Norway rat) or a black rat, then you can choose the right bait. Black rats are vegetarians. Brown rats eat both plant foods and meat. If you have more than one kind of rat to catch, it is best to use a plant food such as peanut butter as bait.
Spread peanut butter over the surface of the can. When a mouse scurries up the ramp to eat, in theory, he will leap to the can for the bait, spin off the wheel and drown. I can’t see why this bucket mouse trap wouldn’t work on mice.
The Rat Zapper® Classic is equipped with smart-circuit technology that senses when the rodent enters the trap. Once the rodent is inside, the rat steps onto the metal plates, completing the circuit and the trap delivers a quick, humane 8,000 volt shock. Since rats have the ability to restart their hearts, the shock is applied for 2 minutes ensuring a high kill rate. Each time the trap catches a rat, the light on top of the trap flashes red to indicate a kill.
Get rid of rats fast with this Victor Electronic Rat Trap. A more humane alternative to traditional snap traps, the Victor Electronic Rat Trap kills rats using a high-voltage shock. The bait placed along the back wall of the trap, lures the rat inside and onto the metal plates. Its advanced smart circuit technology senses the rodent and instantly delivers 7,000 volts of electricity for two minutes, ensuring a permanent kill. The Victor Electronic Rat Trap kills up to 50 rats per set of 4 ‘C’ batteries (not included).
High-Voltage Shock Humanely Kills Rodents This powerful device works by delivering a humane, high-voltage shock to effectively eliminate rat invaders, and is capable of eliminating up to 50 rats per set of fully charged batteries (4 “C” included for each trap). Plus, with this trap, there’s no need for poisons or chemicals, allowing it to be used anywhere inside your home or business.
The model preferred by professionals and infestation-survivors alike is the classic Victor Easy Set. It’s cheap, effective, and does the job in a way often considered to be more humane than some of the ostensibly friendlier options, as it almost always kills on contact.
Option 1 — Scent Repellents – Victor® Scent-Away™ Rodent Repeller Drops are filled with peppermint oil and deliver a strong minty scent that rodents cannot stand. Hang these drops in an enclosed space, such as a shed or attic, and the scent drives mice away.
Given how rats are likely to nest in basements and crawl spaces and travel through vents and wall cavities, traps should be placed along the walls of office rooms and hallways during off hours, as well as placing them in the lower, dark spaces at all times. If there’s a large infestation in a trash room or around a dumpster area, a mass–trapping could be in order.
Here are 5 mouse traps, available on Amazon, that you may want to consider. If you like what you read, order them now, they (should) arrive tomorrow or the day after, and the following day, you’ll be 90% closer to eliminating your mice problems for good:
The Aspectek Reusable is made from washable materials and includes a built-in bait cup, making it a sanitary option for effective pest elimination time and time again. It opens easily for quick disposal of its victims into the trash.
IT WORKS you have to know how to work it, the first night I just placed the trap in a corner and they moved it, the next day I put the trap under the leg of a small table so they couldn’t move it then added a piece of cookie topped with PEANUT BUTTER in the center as shown in the picture and they were caught happy hunting!
Benefits: Victor traps can be used to release rats safely from the glue traps with a bit of oil. With Victor Glue traps you can save money on rat control and fight your rat infestation at economical price.
Zap any rat that tries to entice your home by using the RZC001 Classic rat trap. Made from quality plastic and featuring an effective design, this unit is suitable for the home and can be placed indoors or outdoors. It has a decent size of 12 x 4 x .5 inches that makes it suitable for most rats.
I worry it might be female and have nest there too. I have LOTS of yarn and need to catch the sucker before I go in to check all the yarn. Can’t imagine to be there with live critter. I even packed towel under the door so he can’t get out.
In addition to being cruel, indiscriminate, and unsanitary, glue traps and other lethal methods never work to keep rodents away in the long run, and their use will actually backfire. This is because when animals are killed or otherwise removed, the resultant spike in the food supply causes accelerated breeding among survivors and newcomers—and this means increased populations!
In all cases, please treat an animal caught on a glue board as an emergency and consult a trained professional. The animal should be safely contained and immediately transported to a local wildlife rehabilitator or veterinarian.
As you know, rats live in groups and prefer to live next to people to find food and a safe home, especially in highly populated areas. Rats can eat your food, lead to severe injury, and transmit diseases. Let’s talk how you can make a rat trap.

Once crimped, insert the wire into both holes. You will need to bend the second side of the wire to get it in the hole. Just straighten the wire after it’s through the hole. Center the can over the bucket opening and bend the spare wire on the outside of the bucket around the bucket rim to keep the can centered over the bucket.
