Norway rats are larger than the smaller, and sleeker Roof Rats. Roof rats have bigger ears and a longer tail than the Norway rat. Also, the roof rat has a pointed nose, and they are excellent climbers. Roof Rats inhabit attics, upper stories, and exterior vegetation. Norway rats occupy lower portions of the building and the ground.

Top Tip :  I bought this trap after I’d dealt with quite a bad rat infestation problem in my chicken run.  It takes out one rat at a time, so if you have evidence of a large number of rats you need to get them under control first.  See here for options and further advice.
The most common type of rat trap is the classic snap trap made by Victor.  The trap is so popular because it is cheap and effective.  Victor makes two versions of their classic trap; Standard and Professional.
These traps came recommended for me by a buddy to handle a chipmunk problem I have. Granted the box says they are for rats, he had success with them for his chipmunk issues, so I figured I’d give it a go. I bought two, we put them out by the side of my deck where they run by, and baited them with peanut butter and waited. The next morning I went out to see if I caught any of the little buggers, and to my surprise both traps were missing! My instant reaction was to blame my nosy neighbors, as they are always a bother. I went inside and put my shoes on to further investigate/search for the missing traps.
Additionally, this product will need to be placed away from pets and children because they could easily become victims of its use (however this is something you should think about with all types of traps)
Remove the ruler or makeshift ramp from the can and take the can to a location about five to ten miles from human habitation.[8] Place the can on the ground and turn it sideways, allowing the mouse to exit.

Use the Rat Zapper Classic with peanut butter or even ordinary pet food as bait to attract unwanted pests. Its smart circuit technology with metal plates allows it to deliver a two-minute, 8,000 volt shock to any sorry individual that enters its walls.
Maybe if you just put a thin line of pb around the can, they would have to reach further and spin off the can. That was one big rat. The ones that got into my house were about 10 inches, nose to tail.
A: Remove the small staple holding the locking bar to the wood base. Place bait inside curl found at the end of the bait pedal.  Pull back bow and hold down with thumb. With other hand, engage the curved portion locking bar under the small, V-shaped lip on the bait pedal.
Hopefully you can use the information below to select the best mouse trap bait for the mice currently invading your home. You will also learn some tricks to use the bait effectively when you come across those few little guys that like to steal your bait without setting off the trap.

Rodent infestations can be a real nuisance to any business or homeowner. Rats and mice have a way of multiplying when you least expect them, so the best way to combat the problem is to invest in a reliable trapping mechanism that is capable of taking care of these pests as quickly and as humanely as possible. However, it’s important to realize that these rodents are intelligent creatures that are both aware and suspicious of their surroundings.
If you encounter an animal who is stuck to a glue trap, pour a small amount of cooking oil or baby oil onto the stuck areas (avoiding the animal’s nose and mouth) and gently work the animal free. If you cannot free the animal, quickly rush him or her to a veterinarian or wildlife rehabilitator. Sometimes euthanasia performed by a veterinarian is the most humane way to end the trapped animal’s suffering.
This is a great mouse trap. Don’t let haters of this device fool you. Unfortunately, some mice just learn to deal with traps, and that’s that. They are mammals, they can learn, and rodents are pretty sharp. Sucks to be you if you have mice that are too smart for this type of trap, and you will have to put out some kind of poison, more likely than not. This DOES NOT make the device faulty!

To make a homemade rat trap from a bucket, you will also need a box, thin board, long wood plank, water and bait food. Take or buy the buckets of at least two feet in size and fill it half full with cold water.
Consider placing traps out unset for a few days. Rats may be wary of new objects that suddenly appear in the path of their established trails, which can make them reluctant to go for traps even when bait is used. In these cases, you may want to consider leaving your traps out “unset” for a few days so that the rats have a chance to get to get used to them. Then, set the traps and add bait — the rats should approach them without fear, making it much more likely that you’ll successfully catch one.
Place a trash can beneath the tube. The can should be wide enough to accommodate the falling tube. Place a small pillow, soft cloth, or pad on the bottom of the can to cushion the tube and mouse who will soon be trapped within.
Despite bans in Victoria, BC, Australia and New Zealand, most countries, including the United States, have placed no regulations on the use of glue boards. There also is very little consumer education about these products –manufacturers and retailers provide virtually no information to alert purchasers as to the concerns that exist with the use of these devices.
The thought of using a wide-mouth bucket to increase the distance to the bait wheel occurred to me early on in this epic battle. But due to my obsession with destroying Ratzilla’s posse in a timely manner, I had no time to waste. I wanted them dead. Now!

To address such a situation, you may want to consider a Baiting Station instead of a trap. That way – hopefully – mice won’t die on premises, and you don’t have to worry about disposing of dead mice upon your return home.
There’s a field behind my house and we sometimes get mice inside during winter. This year I’m not so sure. We’ve heard noises in wall cavities for several weeks but have not caught a glimpse or found droppings. I think I know where they’re coming in and have blocked it. I put out 3 humane traps using peanut butter&chocolate but nothing taken. I can’t find any disturbance to food in cupboards or any packages of food left out. I’ve now put a few things down to see what they might take for bait. They have taken some nuts and a small chicken bone (I heard them drop it on the floor), but have not eaten the porridge oats. I usually see the mice and their droppings. Is it rats?
Place the trap where you have seen signs of rodent activity or along the wall where rodents primarily travel. The end of the trap where the yellow pedal is baited should be placed flush against the wall.

This is the classical, vintage Snap trap design that has been in existence for over a hundred years. However, its wooden and metal design makes it compact and easy to deploy in confined places. Since you actually see your results, you’ll have visible proof that the mice have been eliminated.
When I finally succeeded in my task, a battered and disheveled mouse, with missing clumps of fur, limped off into the night. Many trapped animals end up breaking or chewing off their own limbs in their struggle for freedom.
