It is a stinky process but one of the best ways to prevent these rodents. Take some cow dung cakes and spread them in your attic or garden. When rats eat the cow dung, it will inflame their stomach and lead them to die. Thus, helps get rid of rats outside the house.
There’s no limit as to what you can use to catch rats. Maybe you’ve got mason jars leftover from projects or gifts. Good news! Even these can be converted into live-rat traps. A single catch-and-release method, but hey? It works.
If you have a skittish mouse, you may need to modify the closing mechanism so that rather than pulling the looped string up from the skewer in the bottle’s end by hand, you pull from a distance away with another length of string. Doing so could increase the trap’s effectiveness, but will require more patience on your part.
They never saw it coming… they came wave upon wave into the mouth of the beast. Eager to reach their last meal they crawl inside, but they find only death. The bodies pile higher and higher. The beast shows no mercy and spares no rodent. Its appetite is unending… consuming rodents and batteries without remorse.
I have been using a rat repeller from Pestrol in my shed, as I have been seeing droppings all over the place. Since installing the device I am yet to see one dropping or a rat in a place. It may not work for everyone, but it did for me, so I am glad I tried something so I dont have to use traps or poison. I have read up on some of the scientific research, and it all depends on what frequency the unit is set to. I think some devices are not as effective as they don’t have a correct setting that rats or mice can here. So if you want to try a unit, make sure you do a research on the company.
Some rats can be trap shy. They are shy of new objects and placing unset traps in a new location for a few days will increase the catch. Camouflaging the trap in a shallow pan of grain or sawdust could hide it. Place the bait in a few small placements on the top surface without setting the trap. When the rats start taking the bait, set the trap, leaving only one bait placement in the set trap. Rat traps should not be relocated once a good location is found as this will set up a new obect reaction. Mice are naturally curious so frequent trap relocations will attract their interest.
Set the Trap – Place the arm bar over the kill bar and secure it under the plastic pedal. Take note of the Firm and Sensitive setting. The trap will be easier to set on the firm side, but not trip as easy. The trap will be more difficult to set on the sensitive side, but trip very easily.
But what if you already had plenty of inexpensive and fantastic traps already at your disposal? You wouldn’t settle for store-bought if you knew you had a better recipe at home. Look at traps the same way you would with your mother’s brisket, and know that sometimes the best trap is a matter of wits. If your opponent is smart, then you be smarter. We’re about to show you 10 unique homemade rat traps that require little to no funding at all, and will make you feel like the next MacGyver.
Rats are smart and they are inherently cautious.  Kill as many as you can at once before they get wise to your plans.  If the rats figure out how to avoid the traps then you will need to switch to poisons.
I have (so far) not had to deal with rats, but in my yard, grounds and garden I had an infestation of chipmunks or ground squirrels as some call them. They were the most persistent vermin I ever encountered and were NOT nocturnal. They liked to dig and run through burrows, and would strip a tomato plant in one day by taking a bite from every fruit. AND, it was illegal to shoot, trap or poison them (“wildlife protection!”) So I had to take a stealthier route as the wife’s stupid dog would probably have eaten any poison baits.
Pro Tip: “The Victor Rat Trap M326 is the same trap your Dad used, but it has an extended trigger. On hard services it will pay you to use the Hercules Putty to help hold this Victor Rat Trap in one place. You can also mix some Provoke Rat Attractant with the putty and put it on the trip plate. This helps prevent the rodent from removing the lure without setting off snap of this trap.”
I know this is an old post, but you actually want the stairway to heaven in line with the wire. The vermin will attempt to high wire in an effort to get to the bait. If it doesn’t make it to the can, it loses its balance and will try to gain foot on the can. Then it’s bye bye Ratzilla!
The Victor Metal Pedal Rat Trap is the original wooden snap trap. It’s also the world’s No. 1 selling rat trap for one simple reason it works. Set the baited trap in areas where you have noticed high levels of rodent activity. Rodents tend to travel along walls, so placement in this location often works best. Set up four traps with dabs of peanut butter. Mice have licked them clean without setting off traps. I pick up the traps and they go off. These mice are outsmarting me. They’re probably staring at me and laughing: “Ya right!”. Victor should hire them for their Research and Developing department or maybe CEO.
First, buy a small live trap. It looks like a wire cage with a loaded door that shuts behind a rat after it enters. In fact, the caught rodent stays alive. However, the aim of our homemade rat trap is to catch and kill at once. Batteries supply current and make it possible to design a rat killer from any commercially available cage.

Bell and Howell pestrepellers 10 pack on HSN DO NOT WORK .They do not remove bugs already in the home. I called the company itself who suggested I open a window so moths, flys , and other flying insects can fly out!!!!!! What about what flies in at that time?? I was very disapointed in the B & H reply. They promised to call back and I never heard from them again. I had to use poisonous sprays to take care of the problem myself.as the moth problem was spreading all over the house and to adjoining apartments. Save your investment . They don’t work at all.
Special Features: Low-profile plastic trays, designed to reduce the chance of rodents stopping at the edge of the tray, narrow lip also keeps rodents from skirting along the edges of the tray and avoiding the glue, can be used with Trapper Tunnels to protect against dust and debris
No, guys around. I shall wait until tomorrow and if still there I will dong it on the head with a glass bottle, put it into an old dog food plastic bag and put it in the bin for rubbish collection. That is where they belong. Not around residential housing.
I stand there in shock as he hides on top of the shelf mocking me with his shrieks. It’s on! No more cute little YouTube contraptions. You know, there are times when a better mouse trap has already been built. Use it!
A: Remove the small staple holding the locking bar to the wood base. Place bait inside curl found at the end of the bait pedal.  Pull back bow and hold down with thumb. With other hand, engage the curved portion locking bar under the small, V-shaped lip on the bait pedal.
For best results, bait the trap with a sticky substance. Rats are fond of peanut butter, fruit, meat, and cereal. Using several traps and placing them three feet apart in the rats’ foot path increases the chances of success. After catching a rat, Victor advises users to throw out the trap. For help setting the trap, keeping pets away from traps, and other pest control advice consult the Victor Web site. This item measures 6-13/16 by 3-7/16 inches, and weighs 1 pound. –Jessica Reuling
I grew up in the Midwest, and every so often little mice from a neighboring field would occasionally find their way into our home and set up shop. On one such occasion, we picked up a package of glue traps from the local hardware store and set them out around the house. Back then, I didn’t realize just how horrifying a little glue trap could be.
I had a problem with roof rats. Put two of these bad boys out baited with peanut butter and caught one within a day. I like the fact that it did kill instantly and the poor little guy didn’t suffer. Hate to have to kill them but can’t have them in my attic destroying things.
PETA often fields calls from people who have discovered small “nontarget” animals hopelessly trapped on these sticky boards. One distraught woman found a glue trap with a bird, two frogs, and a salamander stuck to its surface. All the animals were still alive when she found them but died later, despite her efforts to free them.
LED Light Alerts With the Victor® Electronic Rat Trap, simplifying your pest control routine is a breeze. When a catch is made, the trap’s built in LED light will blink green. You’ll know when it’s time to empty your trap without having to check manually. Plus, the convenient LED light function will not only notify you of a catch, but it will also alert you when the trap’s battery is running low by flashing red.
Claiming it controlled cockroaches, my mother used to seed the underside of the house with ‘daddy long-legs’ from our previous house (we were military and moved a lot, often into less than desirable housing). Other than Alabama… she was right. I’ve tolerated a lot of spiderwebs over the years and only ever had cockroaches in apartments that were routinely sprayed. If these ultrasonics drive away spiders as some claim…watch out.
After being driven to distraction by the transformer noise from electronic devices such as tv’s, computer monitors, fluorescent lights and anti pest devices my parents sought out my GP, and I was initially diagnosed with tinnitus. However, knowing it was the devices I was hearing, as unplugging them stopped the noise, my parents paid for a private hearing tests which proved I was able to hear frequencies beyond the supposed 20,000 Hz barrier.
Ok this one is really innovative and gets a sucker with the scratch and sniff sticker. The video below shows an empty bottle, bigger than your average 20-ounce soda bottle and square much like a Fiji water bottle, set up as a rat trap. Now the video is set up for a rat which explains the reasoning behind the larger bottle, but I can imagine the trap in a smaller version would work just as fine for mice.
