Experts will tell you that even if you skip the bait but place the rat trap in the right location, you will have success. On the other hand, the best bait and a poorly placed trap are unlikely to lead to results. This involves inspecting the attic and looking for the rat paths. These rodents go over the same paths repeatedly and you can typically recognize them by their grease and droppings. Place the traps along these paths and you don’t really need to use bait. If it makes you feel better, put some peanut butter or dried fruit on the traps and wait for it to work.
If rats aren’t searching for food or nest building materials, then they are probably in their nest, which would be in a quiet space anywhere in your home, garden or sewer. Rats are most active at sunrise and sunset. They will also avoid humans so tend to come out when you are not around. The reason why rats eat your shoes could be because they are made of leather. However, rats will eat anything. They have a very efficient digestive system.
With each kill, the indicator light on top of the trap blinks green for up to 24 hours, and when the batteries run low or need replacing, the light will blink red. In addition to at-a-glance monitoring, the Victor Electronic Rat Trap offers a hygienic, no-touch, no-see disposal—simply tip to safely dump the dead rodent directly into the trash.

The very first patented (and lethal) trap took the form of a set of spring-loaded, cast-iron jaws called the Royal No. 1, which was patented by James M. Keep of New York in 1879. The classic spring-loaded snap trap, with which people are most familiar, was first patented in 1894 by William C. Hooker of Abingdon, Illinois. A British inventor named James Henry Atkinson patented a very similar device in 1898, which he dubbed the Little Nipper.
Luckily, thanks to modern technology, we have incredible mouse trap solutions available to trap these mice (humanely or otherwise) and dispose of them as we see fit. We also want to use the best mouse trap bait available or even the most perfectly designed piece of technology will not produce any results whatsoever.
Easy to set up. Caught small rat first night. Unfortunately we also had two larger rats that fell in, ate the dog food on the bottom of the bucket, and then jumped back out. We are now cutting the bottom of the bucket off and stacking and taping it to another bucket so they are stacked and now are hopefully too deep for the rats to climb back out. For mice and small rats just the one bucket, some peanut butter, spray oil and a little ramp did the trick quickly. In fact, after purchasing this, my mother in law told us a story of how they used to catch mice on the farm….rolling pin on bucket. Guess this is an old trick!
Are you using the correct trap? A rat trap does not often capture a mouse, and a mouse trap will only irritate an adult rat! Make sure that your trap matches your rodent. For mixed populations, use a T-Rex Rodent Trap. The T-Rex will capture rats or mice and can also be placed in a Protecta tamper resistant station to keep pets and children away from your rodent trap.
ok, so we live in a wooded area… recently one of the vacant lots next door was cleared and we had an influx of rats and mice in the attic and everywhere else. we don’t have food out, or pets, nor small children… so we went to war thinning their numbers. we’ve done the ‘pet/child safe’ trap, the standard wood-spring trap and now this one. this one is easy to set, reusable and does its job for the most part. i say that because with mice, they were dead on the snap. the rats… well they unfortunately suffer a bit because of their much larger size.
The key rule for using snap traps effectively is to use enough traps in the right locations so that the mice cannot be missed. For a light infestation of 1 to 2 mice in a residential kitchen, 6 traps is about right. This includes 2 behind the stove, 2 behind the refrigerator, and 2 behind the kitchen sink.
Let’s do a quick recap of how these devices work. An electric rat trap consists of two separated metal plates connected to a power supply. When a rodent steps onto the metal plates it completes an electrical circuit and the sudden power surge kills the rodent. Instant electrocution via 7000 volts.
I grew up in the Midwest, and every so often little mice from a neighboring field would occasionally find their way into our home and set up shop. On one such occasion, we picked up a package of glue traps from the local hardware store and set them out around the house. Back then, I didn’t realize just how horrifying a little glue trap could be.
Compact, simply-designed, and unobtrusive, the all metal Made2catch Classic features a heavy-duty paddle and a powerful spring action for snapping quickly on large rodents of all kinds. Its rugged construction ensures longevity over time.

If you want to rid your home of both rats and mice and don’t want any mess, this Rat Zapper can do the job. What is the Rat Zapper? It’s not one of those expensive ultrasonic devices that claims to work but doesn’t do a thing. This device used ordinary bait or pet food to lure in the prey into the inner chamber. Though the power of electricity, you can deal with the mice or rats that plague your space. This machine uses a powerful jolt of over 8,000 volts of electrical energy to safely euthanize pests. There will be no blood or gore, and certainly no mess for you to clean up. It is an earth friendly way to handle an age-long problem. Better still is that fact that it doesn’t use messy traps and other poisons, which are dangerous to pets and children. Who wants toxins in their home anyway? If you are concerned about the environment, this is one zapper to check out.
Rat Bait – What is the Best Bait to Catch Rats? Remember, the only thing that matters is that you seal the house shut. After that, trapping is easy! And when you do start trapping, location of the snap trap is far more important than the type of food you put on the rat trap. If you’re using a cage trap bait it with peanut butter and seeds, or bread or whatever you want. And if you’re using the term “rat bait” in search of rat poison, be aware that poison is just plain ineffective, and has a chance of leaving stinky rats in your attic or walls.
To reset the trap, we recommend cleaning the metal plates with a hydrogen peroxide solution. Please turn the trap off and remove the batteries before cleaning. Once the trap has dried, we recommend re-baiting (following the instructions above) and placing the trap against the wall in an area where rats have been seen.
The Tomcat® Rat Trap (Wooden) is the economical way to control rats. The pesticide-free trap can be used with Tomcat® Attractant Gel. Reliable and easy to use, this trap kills rats quickly and efficiently.
You need a waterproof electronic rat trap? Pay attention to the Rodent Terminator Trap. Manufacturer promises it works even in the rain. It takes 2 minutes to set up and then it’s ready to kill rats. By the way, you will never miss the moment of capture because trap can give sound and visual signals. When it triggered, it makes a sound for about 30 seconds similar to a smartphone in vibrate mode. If the plates of Rodent Terminator Trap get too dirty, it’ll give you a fault indication (red LED light). Some users think that getting an indication of a kill is a big trouble because they don’t hear the sound indicator and need to have the ability to check blinking lights as a usual.
Havahart one door trap (X-small) – a human tool for removal of rats from your yard or home. The trap ensures safe and quick trapping. The product is simple-to-operate even if you are not a professional trapper.
You’ve seen it lurking in your basement: a fat rat. Now you’re struggling to fall asleep at night, worrying about the rodent that’s taken up residence in your home. It’s time to set some rat traps. But what, exactly, should you bait your traps with? Fortunately, there are several types of food that will attract your rat. In this case, it’s good news that rats aren’t exactly picky eaters.
Ease of Use: Using an electric trap is very easy. Bait the trap, turn on the power and place the trap where you want it to go. Some traps come with indicator that let you know if a rat has been caught. On some traps the indicator is a flashing light on top of the trap while others have a remote indicator. It is nice to see if the trap has killed anything without having to get on your hands and knees for inspection.
It gets the job done. we had a mice problem and we tried from mouse traps to poison and nothing seemed to work. I heard about this electric mouse/rat trap so we decided to give it a try. It has been about a month and we have trap/electrocuted nearly 10 mouses. I put a little bit of peanut butter and also a piece of bread. MAKE SURE that you put a welcome mat in the entrance of the trap (wet like a towel or something) that way when they get in there they’ll die , hope this helps.
The unit emits a powerful shock that kills the rodent instantly and won’t cause a bloody mess. This makes handling easy and also improves sanitation. Moving the trap is easy courtesy of its light weight of 1.5 pounds and easy to carry design.
Glue traps don’t require any bait at all, and they are safe for children and pets (at least pets larger than a hamster). However, either the rat dies of starvation or thirst, or you have to take appropriate precautions to avoid getting bitten when you remove the angry trapped rat still alive on the glue trap.
Remember: Glue traps cause slow, agonizing deaths for the animals they trap. Never use glue traps, and share this with your family and friends so that they will learn the truth about these vile devices, too. Mice and rats are intelligent, sensitive animals who are just as capable of pain and suffering as the cats and dogs we share our homes with.
Cheap, easy, and I don’t fear for my fingers setting them. I set them up in my shed and storage rooms and I have not seen a trap get sprung without an unwanted intruder in it. Tip, I put a dab of peanut butter and then a piece of dog food sticking out of the peanut butter.
Works great, follow the label!! Must be heated for spreading. I finally cut chunks with scissors and laid them on cheap serving trays from the thrift store (metal to take the heat) and baked them at 250 degrees till they flowed out. I caught 17 rats in 1 week with 6 tray traps 🙂
Ammonia-soaked cotton balls or rags will drive rodents out (they hate the smell). Place them in areas where rodents, droppings, or nests have been seen, and be sure to give the animals a few days to leave. Then, to keep unwelcome “visitors” out, seal entry points using foam sealant, steel wool, hardware cloth, or metal flashing. If any rodents need to be removed from homes, this can be done with humane box traps.
To keep rodents away from your home, eliminate food sources by keeping counter surfaces, floors, and cabinets clean, and store dry food and “pet” food in chew-proof containers. Seal trash cans (use bungee cords on lids) and never feed companion animals outside.
This trap has both a firm and sensitive setting. It will be easier to set on the firm setting. Keep in mind that the pedal is pre-baited. Adding bait is optional, but could affect the sensitivity.
