Eliminating rats from an office building or factory is a much larger mission than trapping rats infesting a home. If multiple floors are seeing signs of rats, you need to learn the root of the problem. They could be accessing these spaces via air vents, basements or even toilets. Once access points are identified, conquer these rodents with a sufficient number of traps.
Ammonia-soaked cotton balls or rags will drive rodents out (they hate the smell). Place them in areas where rodents, droppings, or nests have been seen, and be sure to give the animals a few days to leave. Then, to keep unwelcome “visitors” out, seal entry points using foam sealant, steel wool, hardware cloth, or metal flashing. If any rodents need to be removed from homes, this can be done with humane cage traps. PETA has carried a “smart” mousetrap in our catalog for years because it’s effective and humane, and it’s one of our top-selling items.

Kness Ketch-all Multiple Catch Rat Trap –  The ‘Worlds Best Mousetrap”, the Kness Ketch-all Multiple Catch Trap captures mice and smaller rats. It is not designed to capture large rats.  The story behind this trap is that Mr. Kness developed it for his child’s school in the early 1920’s.  The school had a mouse problem that they could not control. Mr. Kness, being an engineer, developed the world’s first repeating mouse trap. As the story goes, it eliminated the mice and Kness Manufacturing was born.
If you suspect your problem is down to a single rat, you’ll likely be able to solve the problem with one or two strategically placed traps. If, however, there’s an infestation on your property, you’ll probably need to place a dozen or so traps all around your house.
Dog poop is not at the top of the list of preferred foods for rats. It may eat it if there is no other food available, but I agree it will have a tendency to encourage them in contrast to repelling them. In addition, dog poop is not very hygenic to have about the place. Have you tried contacting your local authority to see if they have any policies in place relating to this issue?
The only long-term way to control rodent populations is to make the area unattractive or inaccessible to them. Eliminate their food sources by keeping counter surfaces, floors, and cabinets clean, and store dry food and pet food in chew-proof containers. Seal trash cans (use bungee cords on lids), never feed companion animals outside, pick up fallen fruit and vegetables in orchards and gardens if possible, and never feed wildlife. Reduce hiding places by keeping grass and vegetation trimmed back and outdoor furniture, grills and barbecues, and wood piles away from buildings.
About 1 year ago I also had problem with rats. And I looked for answers “How to get rid of house rats”. I really hate this animals. But I still think, that self made trap – isn’t good idea. Firstly, it’s not effective. Secondly, it’s too cruel. Rat can dying for a few days. I prefer electronic trap.
3 Easy Steps to Get Started In addition to offering flexible and convenient rodent control, the Victor® Smart-Kill™ Wi-Fi Electronic Rat Trap is also easy to set up. In three easy steps, you can have your trap up and running with the ability to monitor multiple traps from your mobile device.
First of all the glue is very difficult to get out of the can because it wants to stick to itself. It helps to have one person hold the can while another person pulls some glue out and cuts it free with a pair of scissors. I started with a golf-ball sized “glob” and spread it out to a thickness of about 1/4 inch. The glue immediately started pulling itself back together to the approximate shape and location of the original “glob” I started with. All that remained in the area of the spread was a sticky residue but not thick enough catch a mouse. I re-spread the glob several times and even tried using a heat gun to make it easier to spread but the glue would always pull itself back to approximate it’s original shape. I finally tried spreading the glue and making cuts across the spread before the glue could pull itself back together. This resulted is a series of smaller globs but there was no way to get the glue to spread to a consistent thickness and stay put. The best I could do was to cover a piece of cardboard with lots of globs, spread them as best as possible, and then come back and add additional globs between the original globs to fill in. After a week(outside), it’s caught a lizard, three yellow jackets, a wasp, and numerous smaller flying insects…but no mice.

I had doubts when I bought this trap, but I gave it a shot anyway. I’m dealing with roof rats and wanted something that wasn’t going to make a huge mess up there. The only reason I don’t give this 5 stars is the price, which prevents me from wanting to buy several of them to clear out the roof rats faster.
TIP: How many traps should you use? That depends on the number of rats. If you suspect you have more than one or two, place several traps where you’ve seen signs of them. You can set as many as a dozen if you suspect you have a significant problem. Traps should be set 5 to 10 feet away from each other.
According to the University of Florida, Traps are effective usually when dealing with small numbers of rats or mice. When rats are plentiful or where unsanitary conditions exist with harborage, poisoned baits is an effective tool to use together with trapping. Read Best rat and mouse poison baits Review.
Note: With any surface, select a cleaning method that will not discolor or damage the surface. If in doubt, test on a non-exposed area, or consult a professional cleaning service. For additional information on using glue traps, see Using Traps.

Remove the paper label. Use you’re ice pick or drill to bore a hole in the center of the can lid. If you plan to reuse the liquid, turn the can over and bore another hole in the bottom of the can over a container. This will vent the can and empty in a few minutes.
Trapper T-Rex Rat Snap Trap –  The Trapper T-Rex Rat trap works very well at capturing rats while not being of any immediate danger to older children or pets. If they happen to trip the trap, it generally scares them while not doing any real damage to tiny fingers.
Glue traps don’t require any bait at all, and they are safe for children and pets (at least pets larger than a hamster). However, either the rat dies of starvation or thirst, or you have to take appropriate precautions to avoid getting bitten when you remove the angry trapped rat still alive on the glue trap.
Rat traps are designed to capture rats. As rats are suspicious of new objects and they know if they have seen a rat trapped inside a trap with one entrance, for example, they will be wary and may avoid them. Spring traps are powerful enough to break an animal’s neck or spine and can even break a human finger. Rat traps are much firmer than a regular mousetrap and may actually not be as sensitive to a mouse as it would to the larger rat. There are a few different types of rat traps that can be used. Glue traps are non-poisonous sticky glue that is usually spread over card board, which sticks the rat into place. A non-lethal trap is a funnel shaped wire cage, the rats can move themselves into the tube through the narrow opening but cannot escape due to the wires poking at them.
At the same time, if mice have invaded a small flat, buying an expensive electronic trap, which undoubtedly has many advantages (described below), but is aimed at long-term use with multiple recharges, is pointless and is unprofitable if you only need to catch two or three rodents.
Each one of the options above has been considered to be some of the best mouse trap bait to catch mice. The mouse bait that you can use to reel in just about any mouse or stop any mouse infestation that you’re dealing with in your home.
While basic snap traps are powerful, and box-covered traps are even more potent, a step above all of those simpler trapping devices is the Rat Zapper Ultra Rat Trap. Operating on four D-size batteries, this thin device fits conveniently alongside walls with its rectangular shape. You simply bait the inside with peanut butter, flip the on-switch and allow the Zapper to do its trick.

I stand there in shock as he hides on top of the shelf mocking me with his shrieks. It’s on! No more cute little YouTube contraptions. You know, there are times when a better mouse trap has already been built. Use it!
Live rat trapping is difficult but can be accomplished.  The problem with live trapping is that unlike snap traps, the rat has to enter the trap and walk across the “trip” plate to get to the lure.  Some rats will wander into the trap without any thought and get trapped.  Other rats are smart and will not enter the trap at all. These rats are said to be “trap shy”.
I just purchased these. I went on YouTube, watched a 30 sec video on how to set it and got 4 of them baited with peanut butter and set. Took 1 min max. I’m not sure why so many people can’t get them set??? I’ll write another review tomorrow….hopefully with some dead mice under my kitchen sink !!!
These traps came recommended for me by a buddy to handle a chipmunk problem I have. Granted the box says they are for rats, he had success with them for his chipmunk issues, so I figured I’d give it a go. I bought two, we put them out by the side of my deck where they run by, and baited them with peanut butter and waited. The next morning I went out to see if I caught any of the little buggers, and to my surprise both traps were missing! My instant reaction was to blame my nosy neighbors, as they are always a bother. I went inside and put my shoes on to further investigate/search for the missing traps.
This stuff does work, but only if you handle it like the comnercial manufacturers… they MELT it to deposit it on their glue boards. Don’t bother trying any other method. Get trays ready that you want to use… cheap baking sheets/trays from thrift stores with a half-inch or more rim work great. Melt the whole can over a gas stove burner turned as low as it goes… it takes a while. I don’t know if an electric stove can be turned low enough… you don’t want to burn it. Use a cheap plastic soup ladle that you won’t need for anything else to transfer it to the baking sheets.
