The Raticator Electronic Rat Trap works extremely well and can safely be used indoors around children and pets. It’s our #1 pick for indoor rat and mice control, and the only trap that kills both mice and large rats.
Use glue traps. Glue traps are pads or sheets covered in a very sticky adhesive with a spot for bait in the middle. When the rat tries to get the bait, its legs are caught in the glue. As it struggles to free itself, its mouth gets caught in the glue and it suffocates. While glue traps are considered fairly effective for killing mice, since rats are bigger and stronger, there is some doubt as to their effectiveness at controlling rat populations. Even large, rat-sized glue traps may not always kill a rat, requiring you to euthanize it yourself.
Euthanize any rats that are injured but not dead. Unfortunately, lethal traps do not always work perfectly — occasionally, you may find a trapped rat that is maimed and unable to escape, but still living. In this case, the most humane thing to do is often to put the animal out of its misery by quickly and cleanly killing it. Releasing an injured rat into the wild is likely to cause it to die a relatively more painful death from starvation or being eaten.
To remove the glue from floors or other nonporous surfaces, try oil if the surface won’t be damaged, or use turpentine, paint thinner, or Goo Be Gone, or similar product. Test an inconspicuous area first. Let the solvent sit for several minutes, wipe it off with a dry cloth, then wash with mild detergent.
But why peanut butter? Do rats like peanut butter? In fact, they absolutely do. There is little information regarding exactly why rats and peanut butter go together so well – or how anyone found out that they did. Regardless of why and how, it has been tested and proven that one of the best and most trusted ways to bait a rat is by spreading the yummy, sticky substance that is peanut butter right onto a trap. Once you get it all set, the rats will be sure to come running.
Use a hydrogen peroxide topical solution (available at most drug stores) and an old toothbrush to clean the inside of the chamber. If needed, use a wire brush to remove any corrosion, being careful not to be too vigorous. This could accidentally remove all of the protective zinc plating.
The Rat Zapper Classic RZC001 is safe and non-toxic. It electrocutes rats with no muss and no fuss. Once a rat is inside, empty it out of the trap into any disposable medium. Uses 4 AA batteries which are good for 20 kills. Read Full Review
Atkinson’s device was made with a weight-activated treadle as the tripping mechanism for a rodent’s successful capture. It was capable of slamming shut in 1/38,000th of a second, a record that has never been beaten by any other snap trap. Atkinson sold his mousetrap patent in 1913 for one thousand pounds to Procter, a company that has been manufacturing the the device ever since.
Catseye prefers to use snap traps for humane reasons unless otherwise directed by a client. Ideally, the best solution is to install an exclusion system to prevent mice from ever entering your home again.
Sure, very few of us are nervous that an army of mice is going to pull us from our beds at night and drag us down into the basement, but there is still an almost primal fear of these little white, gray and brown critters.

Norway rats are larger than the smaller, and sleeker Roof Rats. Roof rats have bigger ears and a longer tail than the Norway rat. Also, the roof rat has a pointed nose, and they are excellent climbers. Roof Rats inhabit attics, upper stories, and exterior vegetation. Norway rats occupy lower portions of the building and the ground.
Take the mouse a distance from your home and release it. Wear sanitary gloves and carry the bottle in an upright position at least five to ten miles away from any human habitation. Open the trap in a meadow or forest, allowing the mouse to go free. Dispose of the sanitary gloves and bottle trap.
The words “rat infestation” conjures up thoughts of the middle ages, the black plague, vermin and the Pied Piper. Rats are no laughing matter, spreading disease as they go, as they have colonized virtually every part of the earth by hitching a ride on the vehicles that humans have used to explore the earth, particularly seafaring vessels.
After my encounters with the mouse who had gotten stuck in our glue trap, I wasn’t able to sleep for several nights without the paranoia that every little sound I heard was made by a small suffering mouse.
Be patient because rats are neophobic. They steer clear of new items in their environments. If you are going to use a snap type trap or a rat zapper, put out the bait without the trap for a day or two. Let the rats get used to the presence of the bait. Then use the same reward to bait the trap.

Spread butter on the handle of a spoon and put it across the bucket. When the mouse climbs to get peanut butter, it will fall into the bucket with a spoon. If you do not like the idea that the mice would ruin cutlery, you can make a similar trap with any other materials, such as paper plate, tissue paper roll, etc or make bucket & spoon trap with water in the bucket.
Do not use a trash can which is too wide. If you do, it’s possible the tube will come to rest on an angle, rather than straight up and down. If that happens, the mouse will be able to climb out of the tube easily.
While this device is designed to deliver no-blood kills by squeezing the caught mouse hard; that may not always be the result it produces. If the rat is relatively small, this device may invariably cause it to bleed. Additionally, as the snap-back top falls on the mouse, there may be unintended “mess” (e.g. mouse poop) released in the immediate vicinity of the trap.
Rats are one of the most infamous, well-known, and hard-to-eliminate pests in the modern world. A rat infestation can be a serious problem can spread harmful parasites (like fleas) and illnesses (like Hantavirus, and, famously, the Black Plague.) To deal with a rat problem, start laying traps early and often and be willing to call in professional help if the infestation gets out of hand.
Place fabric items in the freezer, if possible. Once the glue is frozen you can simply peel it off. For glue on fabric-covered furniture, try placing a freezer pack or ice cubes in a plastic bag on the glue. When very cold and brittle, scrape the glue off. Small items that won’t be damaged by freezing can also be placed in the freezer to remove glue.

Here is what happens – a small 1/4″ inch rubber ring is attached inside of the Nooski and stretched to size of a quarter. When the rat sticks its head inside the trap opening, it trips a lever that releases the rubber ring. The rubber ring is released around the throat of the rat instantly suffocating it.

The specific location for a trap matters as well. Rats prefer dark areas where food is present. That said, kitchen corners and cupboards can be good places to set them. Finally, one must consider the type of bait they choose to use. Peanut butter and cream cheese baits are some of the safest types to use around pets, as they are non-poisonous and sticky, which will make it tough for a rat to escape.
It’s just as important to check live traps as it is to check lethal traps. Leaving a rat in a live trap for a long period of time can be potentially deadly, especially in very hot or cold climates where the rat is vulnerable to exposure.
Set out unset rat traps can be buried in grain, sawdust, or similar materials within an empty cardboard box or pie pan. Place the rat bait in small pieces near it and above it with the hidden trap below. Once the rats start taking the bait, set the traps. This set up will acclimate the rats to the traps, once adapted, set enough traps to kill a large percentage of the population before the rodents become ” trap shy” This method is called mass trapping, catching them at a higher rate than they can repopulate and become shy of the trap.
Today there are several manufacturers of Multiple Catch mouse traps. The Kness trap is still one of the best and most used by pest control companies. Most food preparation facilities, bakeries, restaurants and warehouses use these traps indoors. They can be placed ever 25-50 feet along walls and around doors
Third, attach jumper cables to the metal plate at the back of the cage. The clips on the cables should just barely fit onto the edge of the mesh cage. Set the trapdoor loading the spring as directed on the product label. Place the electric cage rat trap diy in a rodent-infested area.
Bury or throw out dead rats. If you find a dead rat in your trap, disposing of it is usually fairly simple: either carefully place the rat in a plastic bag and set it in your outdoor garbage container or else dig a hole in the ground a few feet deep and bury it. If you dig a hole, make sure it’s not any shallower than a foot or so or neighborhood pets may dig up the rat’s carcass.
The model preferred by professionals and infestation-survivors alike is the classic Victor Easy Set. It’s cheap, effective, and does the job in a way often considered to be more humane than some of the ostensibly friendlier options, as it almost always kills on contact.
To address such a situation, you may want to consider a Baiting Station instead of a trap. That way – hopefully – mice won’t die on premises, and you don’t have to worry about disposing of dead mice upon your return home.
Additionally, this product will need to be placed away from pets and children because they could easily become victims of its use (however this is something you should think about with all types of traps)
