It is important to maintain the appearance that the papered-over coffee can is capable of supporting the mouse when it walks across it. Instead of cutting a solid “X”, you could try poking small, closely-spaced holes in an “X” shape across the surface of the paper.
Easy to set by hand or foot. Patented interlocking teeth. Removable bait cup allows trap to be service without being set. Motomco’s mechanical traps are ideal for capturing the occasional “intruder” or as part of a more extensive control program. Traps are easy to use and work well along walls, in corners or wherever rodents travel. TOMCAT reusable rat and mouse traps set in one easy motion and are safer to use the conventional snap traps.

Garbage scraps and trash — Regardless of the refuse humans throw away, much of it is a goldmine in the minds of rats and mice. Food of all kinds are prime targets of rodent dumpster diving, especially disposed-of bread, cheese, meat, fruits and vegetables.

This is the second round of a dozen traps. The desert heat trashes them over 6 months…however, they are the easiest to trap with. I’ve never even baited them. Never! Just place on known rat areas and they work fine without the mess. I had tried other brands, and poison…didn’t work.
If you have average-sized rats and a need for less than 20 kills per set of batteries, get the Rat Zapper® Classic electronic rat trap, equipped with a large chamber size. However, if you are dealing with larger rats, consider buying the Rat Zapper® Ultra (sold separately), equipped with the largest chamber size available and suited to kill more than 20 rats per set of batteries.
Q.I have had no luck so far with this trap and peanut butter. I’m thinking that the problem may be that the first time I handled the traps I wasn’t wearing gloves, so I left my scent on the traps and that’s scaring off the rats. How do I clean the traps to remove my scent? I read somewhere that I just need hot water, but is dish soap needed too?
Given how rats are likely to nest in basements and crawl spaces and travel through vents and wall cavities, traps should be placed along the walls of office rooms and hallways during off hours, as well as placing them in the lower, dark spaces at all times. If there’s a large infestation in a trash room or around a dumpster area, a mass–trapping could be in order.
Up until 1996, more than 4,400 trap patents were issued, more than ninety-five percent of these being awarded to amateur inventors, which truly makes the trap a consumer’s invention in most every shape and type possible, electric or not.
Wait for the mouse to fall in. The mouse will run up the ruler to reach the food on the opposite side of the coffee can, then fall into the can when the apparently solid surface gives way beneath it. You’ll know the trap has been sprung if you see the bait you laid is no longer there, or if the construction paper has been partially torn. Check the can for the mouse.
Most of the scientists believe that, there are only two effective ways to get rid of them from your house; rat traps & poison baits. But, a lot of people say that, mouse repellents really work. You can read this article about ultrasonic rat repellers.
I had far to many misses with Victor snap traps until I repeatedly tested the trap and realized that when the trap triggered and the bow flew over it actually pulled the trap out from under the mouse or rat. I now screw the the mouse traps to a 6″ long piece of 2×1. It’s simple, stabilizes the trap, and make handling easier. I use a 8″ piece of 2×4 for the rat traps. One screw does the job and I no longer have flying rat traps.
If you notice you have a mouse problem, do not just go out and buy the first available mouse trap. You need to evaluate several factors before deciding on mouse traps that are ideal for your particular situation. Here are some of the questions to consider:
As for how many uses you can get, I got over a dozen kills with the first one. I stopped counting after that. But eventually, the mechanism will stop working properly. It seems to set but actually it takes more pressure than a bait thieving rat will apply to trip it. At the price of a replacement, I have no complaints though.
Rats (especially Roof rats) are wary of new objects, new foods or changed in environment. They are constantly exploring surroundings and notice changes and are suspious by nature.. This is why traps and bait stations may be avoided for a day or two. They approach new food or object with caution. Within a rat colony, they may be a few rats that are extra cautious and manage to avoid traps or eating rodent baits. See Rat Trapping Tips and Rat Baiting Tips.
Even though no one truly knows the origin of the black rat, the earliest traces of human co-habitation come from Southeast Asia, although there are fossils of the black rat from prehistoric times in Europe. Needless to say, this symbiotic relationship between rats and humans happened early on, and the species has become so specialized, many scientists speculate that if the human population ever died out, black rats would go extinct too.
After a horrible experience with a rat trap I have an aversion to mouse/rat traps so I used live traps – but when a family of rats showed up I had no choice – they had to go, permanently. Thank goodness I discovered the Rat Zapper Traps. I set them out and within 2 days the rats where gone. No fuss – no mess. I will be ordering the larger size in case any other fuzzy friends show up.
I have (so far) not had to deal with rats, but in my yard, grounds and garden I had an infestation of chipmunks or ground squirrels as some call them. They were the most persistent vermin I ever encountered and were NOT nocturnal. They liked to dig and run through burrows, and would strip a tomato plant in one day by taking a bite from every fruit. AND, it was illegal to shoot, trap or poison them (“wildlife protection!”) So I had to take a stealthier route as the wife’s stupid dog would probably have eaten any poison baits.
Bait the tube.[1] Place a piece of cheese, candy, or bread in the far end of the tube. Ensure it is of sufficient mass to attract a mouse but not so heavy that it will significantly alter the weight of the tube. Do not choose foods which are sticky or gummy; they can be hard to get all the way down the tube.
The best rat trap to catch rats depends entirely on where the trap is to be placed.  Indoor rat trapping is much different than outdoor trapping.  In order to determine which rat trap is best, knowing all of the different styles and methods helps.  Never place an old wooden snap style rat trap where children or pets can get to it.  By comparison, glue board style rat traps can’t be used outdoors.  Outdoor trapping can be difficult, indoor trapping dangerous for children and pets.  What do the pros do?  Which rat trap is best?
How it works – Plastic rat traps work by suffocating the rat, not by a crushing blow from a thick heavy wire.  After capture, the plastic lid squeezes tighter and tighter and the rat cannot breathe.  As a result the rat suffocates – usually within minutes.  The air literally gets squeezed out of it’s lungs.
Nooski Rat Trap – great option to kill rats humanely and quickly. The product is really easy to use. It works by using rubber latex ring. When the rodent enters the trap the ring is released onto its neck/chest causing the critter to spring free of the Nooski trap and die quickly a few feet away.

The Victor rat trap can be used indoors or out. Because of its design, it is perfect for a barn or other outdoor location. This trap is 7 inches long and 3.25 inches wide, which is perfect for capturing those large rats. Due to the fact that this trap is designed for rats, it won’t work as well for smaller mice. These traps are very sturdy and a produce a wicked snap that can kill a rate up to 6 inches. It’s the most economical way to take care of the occasional rat or a whole house infestation.

This type of trap is perfect for a brave or arrogant mouse who thinks he has the run of the house. If mice have become accustomed to human activity and brazenly scurry about even in the presence of many people, you’ll be able to snap this trap closed on them with little trouble.
If you see one, there is usually more. And they don’t leave on their own accord. I reset the trap after 11 o’clock that night – way past my bed time. Checked the next morning and one of his girlfriends couldn’t resist the cheese. Disposed of her and reset. You guessed it, caught another one! Three dead rats.
Our friend has told us about his trying to catch rats with the help of an ordinary snap trap. Once he saw how two rats were stealing the bait from the trap. One rat raised the trap’s cross-bar with the help of its teeth and returned it back after its rat-friend pulled out the bait. Rats are so cunning and adaptable that it is very hard to get rid of them. By their ability to survive, they can be compared only with cockroaches. That is why electronic traps, which kill rats by electric shock immediately, have become the best solution for many people.
Once you’ve removed the board, keep the animal in a warm, dark and quiet location until a wildlife rehabilitator or veterinarian is available. The animal should receive treatment for being “oiled,” as oil affects an their ability to regulate body temperature. If this is not possible, then a holding period until release conditions are appropriate is the next best step.
I cut a gob from the original can (using a heated butter knife) and placed it in a metal coffee can, then gently heated it over a low flame.( I did this in my shop, because you certainly don’t want this stuff on your kitchen stove!) Be very careful to not get it too hot, as it will burn. Next time I will use a makeshift double boiler arrangement and heat it with hot water.
3) Are you a conservationist? If the answer is yes, and you believe that harming mice isn’t morally justifiable, then Snap Traps, Glue Traps and Baiting Stations aren’t what you want. A Multiple Catch trap is more likely what you are looking for when it comes to catching these animals. These sort of devices are great and effective for catching small rodents in your home, so if you are looking for a humane way to get rid of the animals then this is what you’re looking for.
Cheap, easy, and I don’t fear for my fingers setting them. I set them up in my shed and storage rooms and I have not seen a trap get sprung without an unwanted intruder in it. Tip, I put a dab of peanut butter and then a piece of dog food sticking out of the peanut butter.
To dispose of a trapped rodent, wear disposable gloves. For easy removal, throw the trap and the dead rodent into the trash together. If you would prefer to reuse the trap, pull back the U-shaped bar to release the carcass into the trash.
One of the cruelest methods of killing animals that exists today is the glue trap. These devices consist of pieces of cardboard, fiberboard, or plastic coated with a sticky adhesive designed to ensnare any small animal who wanders across or lands on its surface.
It’s just as important to check live traps as it is to check lethal traps. Leaving a rat in a live trap for a long period of time can be potentially deadly, especially in very hot or cold climates where the rat is vulnerable to exposure.
