Rats have been the bane of human civilization for as long as there have been humans. These enterprising rodents were originally forest dwellers that took their rightful place in the animal kingdom. However, as the human population grew and developed civilizations, rats adapted to a life of living off human food waste. The rats targeted by rat traps have become pests and are known specifically as black rats, taxonomically named rattus rattus.
Worked out the package, two nights in a row. 1st night female, 2nd night male. Bought the two pack, put strawberry in one & peanut butter in the other (something eating our strawberries). Strawberry trap got them both, didn’t even put new bait second night, just reset in same spot with a little bait still in cup. No more rat problem (for now). PB trap still sitting there with bait, set so strawberry is the bait of choice.
The unit emits a powerful shock that kills the rodent instantly and won’t cause a bloody mess. This makes handling easy and also improves sanitation. Moving the trap is easy courtesy of its light weight of 1.5 pounds and easy to carry design.
Trapped rodents and other animals suffer immeasurably during the days that it takes for them to die. Glue traps rip patches of skin, fur, and feathers off the animals’ bodies as they struggle to escape, and many animals even chew off their own legs trying to get free. Some animals get their faces stuck in the glue and suffocate, which can take hours. And the screaming of ensnared rodents is extremely upsetting to people who are then unsure of how to “dispose” of these living creatures. Glue-trap manufacturers generally direct consumers to throw animals in the trash along with the trap, leaving the victims to suffer for days until they finally die of starvation, dehydration, or stress—a cruel fate.
One of the best ways to deal with a rat infestation is to trap them out. Unfortunately, rats are very intelligent and they learn quickly. If one rat sees another get trapped, it will never venture near that trap again, so you may have to employ each and every type on this list to fully take care of the problem. Unless you are dealing with one or two rats that have just entered your living space, the chances are that only one type of trap is not going to solve the problem. That said, the rat traps on this list were selected because they are the easiest to set and place, easy to empty and are highly effective.
As you know, rats live in groups and prefer to live next to people to find food and a safe home, especially in highly populated areas. Rats can eat your food, lead to severe injury, and transmit diseases. Let’s talk how you can make a rat trap.
Rodents are creatures of habit—they like to take the same path to and from their nests. So your best bet for catching them is to intercept them as they travel back and forth. Target areas near refrigerators, in pantries, along baseboards, or in attic spaces.
Note: With any surface, select a cleaning method that will not discolor or damage the surface. If in doubt, test on a non-exposed area, or consult a professional cleaning service. For additional information on using glue traps, see Using Traps.

Ammonia-soaked cotton balls or rags will drive rodents out (they hate the smell). Place them in areas where rodents, droppings, or nests have been seen, and be sure to give the animals a few days to leave. Then, to keep unwelcome “visitors” out, seal entry points using foam sealant, steel wool, hardware cloth, or metal flashing. If any rodents need to be removed from homes, this can be done with humane box traps.
The most common rat trap going is essentially a giant sized mouse trap using a spring mechanism mounted to a flat piece of wood. It has a bait cup or a bait station which when disturbed, releases a spring-loaded arm that snaps shut onto a rats neck with sufficient force to cause instant death. These “snap traps” are available in different shapes and sizes, but all employ a spring-loaded arm that snaps shut when a rat takes the bait.

If you must place a trap parallel to a wall, place it toe-to-toe with another trap facing the opposite direction. This will make it easier to catch a rat coming from either direction. Otherwise, keep your traps spaced at least 15 feet apart from one another.

A lot of people are suspicious of whether home rat traps will really work or not. Anyway, the reality of the situation is that if you make them correctly. Also put them in the right areas of your home where there is high population of rodents. It is sometimes unclear why originally built rodent traps may not work to rid you of rats while homemade ones will work successfully, but it happens.
How it works –  When a rat or mouse stumbles onto the glue, it immediately becomes entangled.  The rodent then usually makes a valiant effort to escape, and as a result usually becomes completely covered in glue, resulting in a long slow death, suffocation or starvation.  In some instances, rats have been known to chew off body parts in order to escape.  When a rat or mouse is captured, simply toss into the trash and replace the board.

How about a LARGE detailed drawing on your website of how the trap should be set. “Engage locking bar on curved portion of bait pedal” doesn’t clarify anything, nor does the 45 degree instructions. A picture or drawing would be so helpful.

Rats instinctively use walls and fences as guides. Therefore, they are unlikely to roam into the center of a room or yard. As such, traps are usually most effective when placed along a wall and in a low-light setting. Traps are most effective when hidden along paths where rats are most likely to travel.
The chipmunk trap is just like yours, in that you have an access (board or thick stick) and a bucket. In this case it should be half full of water, and you use birdseed-grade sunflower seeds. I would take about a half cup, sprinkle it on top of the water, bait a few on the stick, and go to work. In the evening, check the bucket and usually there was a drowned (or drowning – not for the squeamish spouses) chipmunk in the bucket. My record was 6 in one day. Whether they were jumping in to eat the seeds, or thirsty and going after the water, I don’t care as long as it worked.
If a rat smells a food on another rat’s breath, it will eat that food. Actually, rats need to smell a combination of carbon disulphide (or “rat breath”) and a food odor to feel comfortable eating a new food. Once one rat takes a bait, others will compete for it. The best way to make sure this happens is to put out a bait food on traps you have not set for several days before you set the traps.

This is a great mouse trap. Don’t let haters of this device fool you. Unfortunately, some mice just learn to deal with traps, and that’s that. They are mammals, they can learn, and rodents are pretty sharp. Sucks to be you if you have mice that are too smart for this type of trap, and you will have to put out some kind of poison, more likely than not. This DOES NOT make the device faulty!

Trapping rats can be frustrating as well as a little gross, but in the end, it will all be worth it. There are a variety of ways to trap rats, with multiple different trap types out there that will catch a rat however you deem appropriate. One thing that is universally true, though, no matter the trap – peanut butter. To successfully protect your home against invading wild rats, be sure to use peanut butter as bait. Because just like us, rats and peanut butter seem to go together incredibly well.
overall we’re pleased with the effectiveness and if we had used a little more forethought and tied a string to the trap this last time, the rat wouldn’t have bounced away under the insulation somewhere in our attic. also, we had it placed in the open in a ‘run’ and not as they describe in their videos which probably contributes to the suffering bit since the head isn’t being guillotined properly.
A: Always secure bait in a bait station. TOMCAT sells its baits pre-loaded in, or packaged with tamper-resistant bait stations. You should begin baiting as soon as you detect a problem. Put bait stations in areas where you notice or suspect rodent activity; where rodents will find it. Mice tend to travel only 10 to 30 feet from their nest, while a rat’s home range is 100 to 150 feet. Be sure to keep bait fresh and dry, and dispose of any old or contaminated bait. Each mouse only needs to consume a small portion of the bait block to get ill and die, so while you may not see a great deal of evidence that it is being consumed, it is working. As with any rodent control product, always follow the DIRECTIONS FOR USE on the package. The safest way to use any rodent control product is to place it in areas inaccessible to children and dogs.
