If you must place a trap parallel to a wall, place it toe-to-toe with another trap facing the opposite direction. This will make it easier to catch a rat coming from either direction. Otherwise, keep your traps spaced at least 15 feet apart from one another.
The all-weather housing allows the trap to be used indoors and outdoors while the 2-chamber designs make cleaning easy. It delivers a heart-stopping shock that kills the rat or mice in a humane manner without blood, splatter or any other mess.
Rats infest homes and cause destruction to the areas of the house they live in. Ridding your home of rats requires patience and a plan. The plan usually involves an expensive mousetrap that you may not be able to afford, or involves a messy mousetrap that causes a horrifying scene at cleanup. Homemade mousetraps can cut down on costs, while leaving the gory scenes to a minimum.
Once a rat has been caught, a red light flashes. Then, you empty the rat into a sealable plastic bag, re-bait and place the Zapper back in the rat’s path for another kill. The Zapper kills rats instantly with a powerful 8,000-volt zap. Clean and easy, you never have to touch the rat itself. The Zapper handles all the dirty work.
This type of trap is made using a special adhesive applied to the board, cardboard or plastic tray. Glue is applied to the center of the trap: it often has a flavor pleasant to the rats. It’s not recommended to put traps outside because of natural conditions (humidity, dust), which quickly bring glue into disrepair. Catching rats on such sticky tape is very convenient.
As you know, rats live in groups and prefer to live next to people to find food and a safe home, especially in highly populated areas. Rats can eat your food, lead to severe injury, and transmit diseases. Let’s talk how you can make a rat trap.
Place cheese or other treats such as bread or peanut butter at the very back of the plastic bottle, and place the bottle at the very edge of the table where it will fall off when weight is added to it. The idea is that the rat will go into the bottle to get the treat. The weight will then cause the plastic bottle to fall off the table and hang suspended by the string. The little guy will then patiently sit and eat his treat while waiting for you to get home and let him outside.
I think the most effective electric rat trap for a country house in particular is Hoont Robust. I used it in my country houses and it worked trouble-free, and you only need to dispose of the dead bodies, so try it.
Once a rodent triggers the pedal, the rat trap immediately springs closed to eliminate the pest on contact. The rat trap can then be easily disposed of for quick and clean removal. These traps require no chemicals or poisons, so they are safe to use around food, water, children and pets when used as directed. Victor® Easy Set® Rat Traps are perfect for use anywhere in the home. These rat traps should be placed where rodents travel, such as along walls at 2 to 3 foot intervals.
Our Pest Library is full of up-to-date information on termites, ants, and cockroaches as well as more than 25 common household pests. Find out more information about their behavior, habits, and other cool facts.
A: Rodents will travel the same pathways over and over. Those pathways are always along the base of a wall or similar vertical structure. Traps should always be placed in the pathways. Pairs of traps can be employed since mice will often jump over obstructions in their normal path.
4. The mouse dies trying to break free – Mice have been known to break their necks, tear off their skin or even chew their own legs off trying to make their escape, resulting in a painful death. In the meantime, the trauma that this could cause to the mouse will cause it to urinate and deficate on themselves and the trap. Not only is this cruel in and of itself, but it is extremely unsanitary as it could lead to the spread of the hantavirus.
Cut the plastic bottle, or similar container, so that the hole is large enough for a rat to get inside. You want to use a tall plastic bottle so that the rat is unable to climb out. Make sure not to make it too big. Try to keep the slopped part at the top to prevent the rat from getting out. If you are still wary about the possibility of the rat getting out, then you can grease the top of the bottle to make it too slippery for the rat to escape.
Glue traps also pose disease risks to humans. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Health Canada specifically warn against their use because of the threat of hantaviruses posed when terrified, ensnared animals lose control of their bodily functions.
Easy to set up. Caught small rat first night. Unfortunately we also had two larger rats that fell in, ate the dog food on the bottom of the bucket, and then jumped back out. We are now cutting the bottom of the bucket off and stacking and taping it to another bucket so they are stacked and now are hopefully too deep for the rats to climb back out. For mice and small rats just the one bucket, some peanut butter, spray oil and a little ramp did the trick quickly. In fact, after purchasing this, my mother in law told us a story of how they used to catch mice on the farm….rolling pin on bucket. Guess this is an old trick!
I purchased a few of the Victor Professional rat trraps and the rats are getting in these traps and walking away. These traps do a good job on mice and smaller rats but the large ones are escaping. I wish Victor would put stronger springs on their traps. It would be a great improvement on these otherwise excellent traps.
LED Light Alerts With the Victor® Electronic Rat Trap, simplifying your pest control routine is a breeze. When a catch is made, the trap’s built in LED light will blink green. You’ll know when it’s time to empty your trap without having to check manually. Plus, the convenient LED light function will not only notify you of a catch, but it will also alert you when the trap’s battery is running low by flashing red.
We have a mouse running around our house and my husband is having a fit. I have been in medicine for over 25 years and have never seen the black plague or any other mouse, rat disease so I am going for the no kill solution. After all we are the ones that encroached on their space. Thanks for the ideas!!
A live trap catches the animal without actually killing it. Live traps usually take the form of metal cages that are also designed to leverage bait attractants. When the animal takes the bait, the bait mechanism triggers the cage’s entry point to close, trapping the rat for safe transport away from the property. Glue traps are a bit safer to use than snap traps and they make use of non-poisonous, sticky glue spread over panels of cardboard to keep the animal from escaping. It is important to check glue traps often when humane disposal is a priority. This prevents the rat from starving to death on the trap and the animal can be taken to another location for safe release without having to kill it.
Some people prefer to choose rat exterminator companies when they have to deal with rat infestation. However, not everyone can afford this option. Buying special traps is often the way out. You can choose snap traps with effective trigger system or purchase live and electronic traps for safe and humane rat control. It’s up to you what choose.

I bought these traps after having little success with my Have-a-heart trap, I think the mechanism had gotten a little stuck after leaving it outside, meaning that the rats could take the bait without triggering the trap. I received the traps two days after ordering and I appreciated the email with some advice. Not that I needed it; as soon as the package arrived in the morning I baited the four traps, each with a little bit of ripe Manchego, and placed them around the area I suspected the rat(s) were active. I came home in the evening and checked the traps. The three I put in my kitchen were untriggered but, low and behold, the trap in the basement had caught the rat. The trap had crushed its head and must have killed it instantly – the strength of the impact was apparent from the blood splatter. I think it was just the one rat as the other traps remain untriggered and I haven’t seen any evidence of rat activity since. Great product!
Live traps are generally larger than standard snap traps. The larger trap size can be more of an issue to the rat and can create “trap shyness”. Live rat traps also create another problem – the rat is alive when captured. The rat has to then be relocated far enough away that it can’t find it’s way back. That usually means a trip in the car or truck to let it go somewhere.
Electronic Zapper Rat Trap Advantages – Simple to use, rat or mouse is hidden inside chamber after death so it is not visible. Flashing red light alerts to a kill. Only trap that kills both mice and large rats.
Though it is designed without any killing action, the Trapro Humane is quite functional as a pest catcher. Available in two sizes, its door features a clever locking system that’s easy to set and is highly resistant to tampering from within.
Meat — The consumption of meat among rodents tends to vary between each species. Though they prefer seeds, grains and fruits, most mouse species are omnivorous creatures that will eat meat if the opportunity presents itself. Rats are more avid meat eaters, and they will consume all types of rotten fish, poultry and red meat. Mostly this meat is recovered wherever they can find disposed foods, such as dumpsters, trash cans or stripped off of roadkill. However, it should be clarified that rats and mice don’t hunt for meat. They simply eat whatever meat they find.
Please be sure to read the product label of any insecticide you choose to use to get information on the personal protective safety gear you will need. In most situations, it is recommended that you wear long pants, a long sleeved shirt, closed toe shoes with socks, chemical resistant gloves, and goggles. In areas where ventilation is poor, a manufacturer may recommend you wear a mask or a respirator. We have put together two different safety kits that will make selecting the correct safety gear easier for you.
The best bait for a rat trap could all depend on the species of rat you’re trying to catch. Different species eat different types of food. For instance, black rats are herbivorous creatures, but brown rats are omnivorous by nature.
Had mice in a customer’s attic that kept evading me. A co-worker suggested these and they worked like a charm. I used rubber gloves to bait and set traps with peanut butter. Killed mice instantly and humanely with no mess.
