Change of plans. This bucket trap may work for mice but not for this nemesis! As Roy Scheider, star of Jaws, said when he laid eyes on the shark, “Your going to need a bigger boat.” When dealing with Ratzilla and his kin, you’re going to need a bigger bucket!
Norway rats are larger than the smaller, and sleeker Roof Rats. Roof rats have bigger ears and a longer tail than the Norway rat. Also, the roof rat has a pointed nose, and they are excellent climbers. Roof Rats inhabit attics, upper stories, and exterior vegetation. Norway rats occupy lower portions of the building and the ground.
Wonder how to get rid of canny rats in your yard or interiors? Now you can effectively keep rats at bay with the help of traps. Whether you are after snap traps or are looking for electronic rat traps, you can find just what you are searching for in this article.
If rats aren’t searching for food or nest building materials, then they are probably in their nest, which would be in a quiet space anywhere in your home, garden or sewer. Rats are most active at sunrise and sunset. They will also avoid humans so tend to come out when you are not around. The reason why rats eat your shoes could be because they are made of leather. However, rats will eat anything. They have a very efficient digestive system.
I occasionally use mouse glue traps around our home when I see evidence of mice. The other day my 2-year old daughter stuck her hand on a glue trap that I thought was hidden. We both freaked out because we couldn’t figure out how to get her unglued. I finally got her calmed down enough so that I could slowly pull her loose but it was a lot of work to get the glue off of her skin. Is there an easier way to do this in case it happens again? A. Spread butter on the handle of a spoon and put it across the bucket. When the mouse climbs to get peanut butter, it will fall into the bucket with a spoon. If you do not like the idea that the mice would ruin cutlery, you can make a similar trap with any other materials, such as paper plate, tissue paper roll, etc or make bucket & spoon trap with water in the bucket.
Most likely it can’t as its entrance is not large enough so probably a kitten won’t fit inside. The same is true for the bait. Use sunflower seeds which attract mice effectively. A kitten will hardly eat them. It can attempt to get there out of curiously, but no one is immune from that. I haven’t heard anything about pets being electrocuted by electric traps, so I don’t think there is anything to worry about.
The original wood-based wire snap trap, the Victor® Easy Set® Rat Trap, 12 Pack, provides instant rodent control. For effective rat control, each rat trap comes pre-baited with a large, scented plastic ‘swiss cheese’ trip pedal. The large pedal of this rat trap is easily activated – both by rodent interest in food and through accidental contact as rats scamper across the floor – to ensure maximum trapping.
I don’t know about them being mean, but the real problem is that they are very smart, which is a problem when trying to get rid of them. Like you, I would be happy if I never saw another one, but I prefer humane means to kill them if possible. Years ago I was out in the barn and heard a tiny, high pitched scream. I went to where I had snap traps set and there was a baby rat that had its back broken by the trap; it was screaming in agony. I had to kill it with a hammer. I never want to repeat that!
These are the traditional traps which are being used for years. These remind you about the famous cartoon show, Tom and Jerry. In these, we set a bait to attract the rodents, and when they try to steal, it triggers the trap and a strong & heavy steel bar lands on them with a huge force.
The Victor Electronic Rat Trap is easy-to-use. Start by inserting four ‘C’ batteries into the battery compartment and replacing the cover. Then, using a Q-tip or toothpick (to avoid leaving your scent), add an enticing rat snack like peanut butter or dry pet food through the hole in the back wall of the trap. Place the rat trap where there are signs of rodent activity. Since rats typically travel along the edge of a room, the trap can also be placed lengthwise along the wall with the bait side closest to the wall. Flip the switch to ‘on’, and it’s good to go—a green light will blink once and a short buzzing sound will be heard to verify it’s working.
It runs on 4C batteries that offer up to 50 cycles or 50 rats and comes with a zero escape patented design. The smart device automatically resets itself after a kill and is easy to carry since it weighs about 15.2 ounces.
From a trusted brand among no-kill enthusiasts, the Havahart 2-Door is safe and easy to use for capturing any rodents you may have scurrying around. It’s designed to prevent inhabitants from hurting themselves or you while you escort them to their new homes elsewhere.
Rats are smart and they are inherently cautious. Kill as many as you can at once before they get wise to your plans. If the rats figure out how to avoid the traps then you will need to switch to poisons.
Water is the main threat of such devices. Only Rodent Terminator Trap of all other traps described is claimed to be water-resistant, although you never know for sure. Any moisture inside the gadget will lead to problems, so either you shouldn’t use it outdoors at all or you should cover it securely (with a case or place it inside a waterproof container). The same applies to changes in temperature: in extreme heat or cold, the tap should theoretically work, but the battery will discharge very quickly. So you can go for it, if you are ready for spending additional money on batteries.
I purchased these traps thinking they were bigger than other traps I had purchased but they were the same size. The picture was deceiving. Two of the traps so far would not stay open. Two other traps did catch rats but would not stay open for a second time. I found these traps more expensive and definitely defective.
Saw poo in my attic. Took action: cut the trees away from the eaves, and put this up there with a schmear of store-brand peanut butter. A few days later, went up in my attic and took away the dead rat. Re-populated it and no new poo or rats have appeared. But Victor will be waiting, with delicious peanut butter, if they do.

I stand there in shock as he hides on top of the shelf mocking me with his shrieks. It’s on! No more cute little YouTube contraptions. You know, there are times when a better mouse trap has already been built. Use it!
If live trapping is the preference you end up trying to do the “responsible” thing, beware of local laws and regulations. In many areas, relocation of wild animals is prohibited. Relocating to different counties can also be against the law. Be sure to check with your local animal control official before relocating any live rat. In some cases, they may even offer to come out and pick it up.
Once a rodent triggers the pedal, the rat trap immediately springs closed to eliminate the pest on contact. The rat trap can then be easily disposed of for quick and clean removal. These traps require no chemicals or poisons, so they are safe to use around food, water, children and pets when used as directed. Victor® Easy Set® Rat Traps are perfect for use anywhere in the home. These rat traps should be placed where rodents travel, such as along walls at 2 to 3 foot intervals.

To trap Roof Rats, set traps on tree limbs, under vegetation on a backyard fence or trellis, or on other aboveground locations roof rats are known to frequent. Fasten the traps with wire to overhead pipes, rafters and beams.
The unit emits a powerful shock that kills the rodent instantly and won’t cause a bloody mess. This makes handling easy and also improves sanitation. Moving the trap is easy courtesy of its light weight of 1.5 pounds and easy to carry design.
This electronic trap is small and created only for mice. Operates as a previous trap and its red LED light only flashes about every 7 seconds. So you have to look at the trap for 7 seconds to understand if the mouse or another rodent inside or not. After the 24-hour of rat’s capture, this light stops flashing – check the mouse trap more often!
Basically what prompted going this route was that my cat recently caught two in one day in the bushes of my yard – finally giving me the hard evidence of the rats out there. I called pest control and the rep quoted $350 for a 1 month monitoring with bait traps to capture – no poison, again for the reason stated above that they might go into walls / crawl space and die and smell terrible. Oh and no guarantee on catching anything. Seriously? $350 for *maybe* some success? I might as well spend $40 for *maybe* some success with my own trap and if it doesnt work, return it.
