Motomco’s mechanical traps are ideal for capturing the occasional “intruder” or as part of a more extensive control program. Havahart Live Catch Rat Trap – Trapping live animals can be tricky. First – it takes “pre-baiting” in which the trap is wired open so that it can’t close. Then it requires a careful plan of strategy to “catch” the rat. Live traps for rats are exactly the same as the larger animal traps for rabbits, skunks and squirrels. The Havahart Live Catch Rat Trap captures the rat alive so that it can be relocated and released to another area.
The best rat trap to catch rats depends entirely on where the trap is to be placed. Indoor rat trapping is much different than outdoor trapping. In order to determine which rat trap is best, knowing all of the different styles and methods helps. Never place an old wooden snap style rat trap where children or pets can get to it. By comparison, glue board style rat traps can’t be used outdoors. Outdoor trapping can be difficult, indoor trapping dangerous for children and pets. What do the pros do? Which rat trap is best?
This trap has both a firm and sensitive setting. It will be easier to set on the firm setting. Keep in mind that the pedal is pre-baited. Adding bait is optional, but could affect the sensitivity. A: Place the trap inside a small cardboard box that has enough height to allow the trap to snap. Cut a 3″ x 3 opening on two opposite sides of the box. Place the box with a baited trap in a known rodent path.
A: Set the trap by pulling the U-shaped bar to the opposite end of the trap and insert the curved end of the pin into the raised end slot of the trigger. The yellow trigger has an “S” and “F”, place the pin closest to the side of the trigger with the “S” for sensitive trigger reaction. Since rats prefer enclosed, safe locations, use Protecta Bait Stations with the T-Rex Snap Traps. These stations will shelter the rat; encouraging it to enter and protect non-targeted animals and children from the harm of the snap trap. The Victor Snap Traps are fine traps, but its height will not fit into bait stations. If this is the case, you can get a cardboard box, cut holes in it and place it over the Victor Snap Trap. This method is not tampered resistant, however.
Glue traps never work to keep rodents away in the long run, and their use will actually backfire. This is because when animals are killed or otherwise removed, the resultant spike in the food supply causes accelerated breeding among survivors and newcomers—and this means increased populations. The only surefire way to keep mice and other animals out of your house is to make it less inviting to them.
These little rodents need nothing more than a quarter inch opening (absolutely anywhere) to gain access to a building or home. On top of that, these little creatures can live inside walls. They may use the interior of your home as a base of operations for midnight raids into your kitchen, bedroom, or pantry.
Rats (especially Roof rats) are wary of new objects, new foods or changed in environment. They are constantly exploring surroundings and notice changes and are suspious by nature.. This is why traps and bait stations may be avoided for a day or two. They approach new food or object with caution. Within a rat colony, they may be a few rats that are extra cautious and manage to avoid traps or eating rodent baits. See Rat Trapping Tips and Rat Baiting Tips.

Besides using peanut butter, there are a few other tried and true ways to effectively trap rats and quickly spare your home of any further damage. For example, you can place cardboard tunnels over the rat traps to create an enclosed space that will attract rats to the peanut butter trap even more so than they already are (if that’s even possible). It is also important to note that rats are very shy creatures that take a while to warm up to new surroundings, so don’t be worried if it’s been a week or so and nothing has happened. Rats will have to first grow accustomed to the traps before they will approach them. So wait patiently, because soon the rats will give in to the temptation of the peanut butter.

If you unintentionally trap a small animal that you didn’t intend to trap such as a lizard or snake, it can usually be released from the trap in the same manner. The nature of glue traps is that the more an animal struggles, the more stuck it becomes, so try to keep the animal calm, and keep it from sticking its nose in the glue.

In the meantime, the trauma that this could cause to the mouse will cause it to urinate and deficate on themselves and the trap. Not only is this cruel in and of itself, but it is extremely unsanitary as it could lead to the spread of the hantavirus.

A: Eating bait will not change a rodent’s “normal” water requirements. It is a myth that rodents will seek water outdoors after eating bait and then die outdoors. There is adequate water in your home to meet all rodent needs. If water weren’t available, rodents wouldn’t live there.
At last, the homemade rat trap from bottle can be placed in an infested area. In addition, the caught rat won’t be able to escape once it comes in because the toothpick prevents the barbwire door from swinging outward.
For all you skeptics, don’t worry this works! Last week found a rat in my back porch, tried to chase it out of the building but hid behind the stairs. I tried to trap it and even leave the back door open, hoping it would leave. Then one day it was back upstairs in my back porch, chased it down the the stairs and even made barricades hoping it would leave the building, to no resolution. Then I decided to order this product and research the reviews, what’s the worst that can happen, lose $10? One week later I got the product, read the instructions, put some peanut butter on the bait cup, set the trap overnight and went to bed. The next day after coming from work, I opened the basement door to find the rat CAPTURED and DEAD!. This product is the real deal. See for yourself! Not sure if I would reuse the trap as some would after this picture.

She has yet to catch a rodent but with the warmer weather they don’t stay around as often. She was very pleased with her gift and would recommend it to others that have rat problems.
__You’re better off with the old style. Put your bait, preferably peanut butter (PB), on the underside of the bait tab, need very little maybe 1/8 thimble. Put a small amount of PB next to the trap as an enticement. Said rodent has to turn it’s head in an awkward position to get the bait and nearly 100% of the time will get caught because it’s out of position for a quick get-away.
This trap isn’t waterproof so you have to purchase an extra water resistant cover to use the trap outdoors. You also can take a useful tip from one clever man: “I cut the top off the cardboard box the zapper was shipped in, cut a viewing hole in the top over the location of the light on the zapper, and used plastic wrap to complete the ‘window”. If a rat smells a food on another rat’s breath, it will eat that food. Actually, rats need to smell a combination of carbon disulphide (or “rat breath”) and a food odor to feel comfortable eating a new food. Once one rat takes a bait, others will compete for it. The best way to make sure this happens is to put out a bait food on traps you have not set for several days before you set the traps.
