You’ll find a lot of conflicting advice about this.  I’ve found four things that seem to work  well : peanut butter, cheese, bacon bits and mashed up cat food.  You don’t need a lot of it – on this trap a smear will work well.
Apply a small amount of high-protein bait, such as peanut butter, hazelnut spread or bacon to the yellow plastic pedal on the trap as shown. Use a Q-tip, toothpick or another tool to bait to avoid transferring your scent to the trap.
If you don’t think it’s appropriate to drop the tube into a garbage pail several feet below the upper-story landing, you could affix the whole tube with a piece of string to the landing itself. That way, instead of dropping down into the garbage pail when the mouse triggered the trap, the tube would drop away and dangle harmlessly off the ledge until you recovered it.
The pungent smell of pepper makes it hard for the rats to breathe and threatens their survival. Simply sprinkle some crushed pepper around the corners and the holes where they reside. You will notice positive results. Repeat the process if necessary.
The Victor Electronic Rat Trap is easy-to-use. Start by inserting four ‘C’ batteries into the battery compartment and replacing the cover. Then, using a Q-tip or toothpick (to avoid leaving your scent), add an enticing rat snack like peanut butter or dry pet food through the hole in the back wall of the trap. Place the rat trap where there are signs of rodent activity. Since rats typically travel along the edge of a room, the trap can also be placed lengthwise along the wall with the bait side closest to the wall. Flip the switch to ‘on’, and it’s good to go—a green light will blink once and a short buzzing sound will be heard to verify it’s working.
A rat made a nest inside one of our reader’s cars, which is parked in their driveway. It chewed through a number of wires and caused a lot of damage. We have written about what we would do to get rid of this problem or prevent it from happening again.
It is a stinky process but one of the best ways to prevent these rodents. Take some cow dung cakes and spread them in your attic or garden. When rats eat the cow dung, it will inflame their stomach and lead them to die. Thus, helps get rid of rats outside the house.
Q.I am having great difficulty setting the “easy set” traps. There is little difference between firm & sensitive settings. Bring back the metal latches, I could set those. These new traps are totally useless to me.
The next day, I awoke to what sounded like an intruder in the kitchen. In actuality, it was a mouse who was trying so violently to escape a glue trap that I mistook him for a living being hundreds of times his size. He took deep, shivering breaths, and every so often he would muster all of his energy and violently thrash in an attempt to free himself.

use about a half gallon of old (smelly) cooking oil in a large open glass container ( a vase or cookie jar ). The oil should be about two – three inches from the top. Secure a timber ramp from the ground to the top of the glass container. The rats will fall in but will not get out due to the slippery oil and glass sides. GUARANTEED to work and to go on working…..

I have been using some of the expensive ones of these [electro-magnetic and ultrasonic][advertised on TV] for about 5-6 years with good results. My Dogs don’t seem to be affected. I gave one to My Son as he had mice but His Pet Lizard was VERY affected by it. I have one in a large metal garden shed and it seems to keep most things out of the shed. My two other sheds do get mice or rats occasionally which I kill with baits. I put one of these in another Sons Apartment which had lots of cockroaches, and the tenants next door complained about all the cockroaches they had.. lol. As lizards don’t like these, maybe snakes don’t either?
A: Try to use the least amount of bait possible in any style mouse trap used.  The more bait you use, the easier it is for rodents to remove it without disturbing the traps. The goal is to have them apply extra force to the trigger pedal with their nose/tongue to remove the bait.  To do this press a small amount of bait into the bait pedal.
We had a double deck built in August this year thus, assume this is where the origin of our problem occurred. As a result, we began to see a large brown rat of which had burrowed under the deck up against the basement wall. With the sound of constant chewing then sudden squealing we realized she had given birth. The rodent entered at the outside air condition unit under the deck and now, are in the basement . At this point, we hired a pest control to use humane options $400. caught one rat and did not leave the trap at that cost! Obviously glue traps do not work, after the first release. Then, again able to remove the bait from another clamp trap apparently out smarting us again. What about a bucket trap? Advise please.
A Hiss is an aggressive form of a ‘huff’.  The rat will be aggressively posturing, probably fluffed up with their tail wagging.  This rat should not be approached or picked up without a towel, some thick gloves or similar.  In many cases it is best to leave the rat to calm down in a small familiar place such as a carrier.  It is often a precursor to an outright attack or fight.
Consider kill traps. Electronic kill traps are widely considered to be the most effective method of removing mice and rats from your home. They are also safer for non-rodents in your home, and easier to dispose of compared to other kill traps. While they are more expensive, they are the quickest way to rid your home of mice and rats, and are the most humane type of kill trap. (Live traps, however, are the most effective way to get squirrels out of your home.[8])
The Victor Metal Pedal Rat Trap makes rodent control easy. Once a rodent triggers the pedal, the trap immediately springs closed to eliminate the pest on contact. After a catch, simply throw away the entire trap for quick and clean removal or dispose of the rat and reuse the trap.

AWe do not carry the M210 so we could not tell you what the true difference is between the items, if any. From our research it looks like the M210 is a model number used for ones sold in big box stores like Home Depot so this could be their product code for it. You can contact Victor at 1-800-800-1819 to find out what the differences would be between the two.
I’m familiar with the Ultrasonic repellers–I bought two of them last year after discovering squirrels in our new home. They were scratching around all through the walls and even between the first and second story floors!! I was very concerned about the damage to insulation and wiring. We were told they would only work in ‘open’ spaces–so I installed them in the attic space. It took nearly 3 1/2 months but seemed to be ‘mostly’ effective. They are very persistent and keep trying to return. I’m hearing one again recently. I was wondering–has anyone tried the ones that work ‘through the wiring’?? That is supposed to be effective between floors and walls!
Take care with pets and children. Keep kids and pets away from traps of all types. This is important to for both your loved ones’ safety and for the effectiveness of the traps. Do not touch pets prior to setting trap, as the scent will make rodents avoid the trap.[18]
In order for a glue board to work it has to be the right size for the rodent you’re dealing with. The Trapper Rat Glue Board Traps are 10″x4.75″, if they’re bigger than the squirrels you’re dealing with they could work.
Consider your live trap options. Use live traps for squirrels. The most common type of live trap is a small cage-like structure with some type of trap door. The company Havahart makes several sizes and models of this type of structure.[22] These are widely considered to be the most effective for trapping squirrels, and can work for rats as well.[23]
