As far as I remember, an infrared sensor is not supposed to be there. If you are looking for this option, check out raticator max trap which has this sensor installed. Actually I think all of the large rat traps, electronic ones in particular, must be equipped with this option
Not sure if the continuation of the tutorial is even necessary at this point. I didn’t have a mouse problem, I had rats! This is why I continue to stress the importance of trading theory for ACTION before you actually need critical gear and equipment.
Update: PB trap caught another male. Also, saw some reviews that some were caught by the legs & alive; all the rats in my traps have been caught around the neck & killed instantly. There is a pre-drilled hole in the back corner that I looped some ss wire through to avoid a rat running off with the trap but it hasn’t been an issue.

– it is very very rare for a rat to beat it… I’ve been using mine 4 years, caught about 75 rats, and only one small female was able to freak out enough to get away… she basically squirmed like crazy, got lucky and lurched backwards out of the trap.

Luckily, thanks to modern technology, we have incredible mouse trap solutions available to trap these mice (humanely or otherwise) and dispose of them as we see fit. Rat traps are commonly baited with cheese, peanut butter, or bacon. The best choice of rat bait, however, depends on the type of rat you are trying to catch. Here are ten easy tips for choosing the best bait for trapping and removing rats. You can find more information here How to Get Rid of Rats or if you discover you have rats in your attic then read this article: Rats in the Attic: What Do You Do?
I have been using some of the expensive ones of these [electro-magnetic and ultrasonic][advertised on TV] for about 5-6 years with good results. My Dogs don’t seem to be affected. I gave one to My Son as he had mice but His Pet Lizard was VERY affected by it. I have one in a large metal garden shed and it seems to keep most things out of the shed. My two other sheds do get mice or rats occasionally which I kill with baits. I put one of these in another Sons Apartment which had lots of cockroaches, and the tenants next door complained about all the cockroaches they had.. lol. As lizards don’t like these, maybe snakes don’t either?
This pulsing red light indicates that either the chamber has been tripped or there is a dead rodent. 98% of the time, a dead rodent is inside. Simply pick up the entire unit and dispose of the rodent in a trash container or plastic bag and reset the trap. The dead rodent does not have to be seen or touched.
Plan ahead to eradicate a large group of rats in one night. To do so, select a bait area, such as a pile of grains, bark or other natural areas where rats congregate. Then bait a large number of traps with peanut butter, and leave them unset on in the area.
This is probably the easiest of them all to make! All it takes is paper. Well, alright, some tape too, and definitely a bucket or trash can for the rodents to land in, but that’s about it! Just fold the paper, bait the end, and hang it halfway over a ledge. By the time the rat realizes that the bottom won’t hold its weight, it’ll be too late. Keep in mind that rats and mice are amazing jumpers and could free themselves depending on how large the container is, or if there’s water in it.
Designed for indoor use or anywhere it’s not exposed to outdoor elements, the reusable Victor Electronic Rat Trap provides years of effective rat control—perfect for attics, garages, basements, and sheds. The trap does not use any poisons or chemicals, but as with any electronic device, it should be used with caution around children and pets.
I will as a matter of principle only recommend things on this site if I feel they’re good value. Usually I’ve tried them myself or know and trust someone else who has. In this case, I’ve been using this trap now for well over two years, with excellent results.
PETA often fields calls from people who have discovered small “nontarget” animals hopelessly trapped on these sticky boards. One distraught woman found a glue trap with a bird, two frogs, and a salamander stuck to its surface. All the animals were still alive when she found them but died later, despite her efforts to free them.
The modified snap trap approach is a little more difficult to make but can provide good results; A rat snap trap, coffee can, small gauge wire and some hardware cloth with some screws is what you’ll need. First attach the trap to the can by screwing the wood just under the tongue (trigger) to the front of the can. Next cut the cloth about a 1/2 inch bigger than the size of the can. Place the cloth on the back side of the can and mold the edges slightly down around the edges. The concave or protruding side up, use your wire to attach it to the spring loaded snap wire of the trap. The long trigger release arm goes through the cloth and sets the trigger. Test the trap out to make sure the release arm does not block the cloth from covering the entire mouth of the can when it shuts. Bait the back of the can with nuts or peanut butter and set the trap. (you can also attach a board for stability to the back of the can) Catch the mouse alive and release him away from the home.
Be patient because rats are neophobic. They steer clear of new items in their environments. If you are going to use a snap type trap or a rat zapper, put out the bait without the trap for a day or two. Let the rats get used to the presence of the bait. Then use the same reward to bait the trap.
Device Location: The sound waves from ultrasonic pest control devices are short range and very weak, so they’re easily blocked by furniture, walls, and corners. To test out the location of your device, place a lamp next to the device, turn off all the other lights, and note the beams and shadows from the lamp. The repellent sound waves will pretty much only be active where the light reaches.
From what you have written, I assume they are outside your apartment and not inside? The best thing to do is remove all food sources, places where they can build nests and nesting materials. Make your property an unfriendly place for rats to live.
