1) Are you okay with having to dispose of the bloodied carcasses of dead mice? Snap mouse traps are highly effective, but they often leave a bloody mess. You need to physically unlock the dead mice and dispose of them. Then, you need to wash the equipment before reusing it again. It an effective way to deal with these little pests but it is not something that people with weak stomachs are able to deal with on a regular basis. There is a huge reason why it is a popular mouse trap, it gets the job done, it does it a little brutally but it definitely serves its purpose.
You’ve already known that most of scientists agree that there are only two ways to eliminate rats that are truly effective: rat traps and poison rat baits. I gave it 4 stars because occasionally the rat gets away. Sometimes the trap is sprung with no sign of a rat, and sometimes there’s a rat arm inside the trap. It makes me feel a little sad to think of the rats with crutches and prosthetic legs. I assume, in their world, it’s hard to get a job as a chef, lab rat, running in a rat race, or zodiac model with a missing front leg. Although, I hear the rats in this area have a strong union with excellent health care.

Use as little bait as you can. If you put down too much, the mouse may be able to grab some without triggering the trap – or the mouse may not be positioned where expected (since the bait is too large) and could be injured or maimed when the trap triggers. Replace bait every day if it hasn’t been eaten. Common baits include peanut butter, oats, cereal, even a bit of tuna. You don’t need much for a mouse – an 1/8 teaspoon or a tiny bit more may work. Use as little as you can to still attract the mouse.
