Those who don’t want to kill mice prefer to use electronic repellers. It’s a human and cut-rate way. For example, the set of 4 Ultrasonic Pest Repellers by Pest Venator costs only ~$28.89 Check the current price.
For best results, bait the trap with a sticky substance. Rats are fond of peanut butter, fruit, meat, and cereal. Using several traps and placing them three feet apart in the rats’ foot path increases the chances of success. After catching a rat, Victor advises users to throw out the trap. For help setting the trap, keeping pets away from traps, and other pest control advice consult the Victor Web site. This item measures 6-13/16 by 3-7/16 inches, and weighs 1 pound. –Jessica Reuling
For those interested, I grew up in “Rat City”, South Seattle neighborhood called White Center. My mom would have me put out DeCon(sp?) rat poison under the house, which apparently desiccates the rat quickly, making them drink any liquid they can find. Unfortunately for them, there’s a nice bowl of bleach waiting for them. I can’t count how many rotting stinky rats I have had to crawl under the house and recover. Many times just a pile of maggots.
Many of us have dogs and cats that roam the yard — a rat trap won’t kill them, but it will hurt them pretty badly. What I do is put down a rat trap – baited with bacon (unlike previous poster, I’m not much for sewing, so I use a twist-tie) – and put it under a plastic milk crate with a couple cinder blocks sitting on top. The pets can’t get to the trap, but the rats can . . . pop goes the rodent! P.S. since I’m lazy, I put the trap set next to the trash can, so I don’t have to walk too far with a dead, stinkin’, flea infested rat.
after quite the outdoor rat infestation, we are now living rat-free 🙂 … thanks to these very effective Victor traps! (and, other items & measures taken below) … the following is what we learned, during our lil’ rat war this past 2017 summer;

The Victor Electronic Rat Trap is an innovative solution in rodent control. It works by delivering a humane, high-voltage shock to effectively kill the invading rat, while the 3-plate design prevents escapes. This powerful device is capable of killing up to 50 rats per set of fully charged batteries (4 “C”), making it a great value when you’re dealing with a sizable infestation. It’s also easy to use! Get started by simply applying a small amount of high-protein bait, such as peanut butter or hazelnut spread, on the back wall of the trap, place the trap in a location with rodent activity and turn it on.
Bait the tube.[1] Place a piece of cheese, candy, or bread in the far end of the tube. Ensure it is of sufficient mass to attract a mouse but not so heavy that it will significantly alter the weight of the tube. Do not choose foods which are sticky or gummy; they can be hard to get all the way down the tube.
The Victor Metal Pedal Rat Trap makes rodent control easy. Once a rodent triggers the pedal, the trap immediately springs closed to eliminate the pest on contact. After a catch, simply throw away the entire trap for quick and clean removal or dispose of the rat and reuse the trap.
Manufacturers direct consumers to throw the animals away along with the trap, but I just couldn’t leave him to starve and die slowly, so I sat outside working with dirt, dish soap, olive oil, and my hands to free the little guy. At one point, the mouse let out a squeak and sunk his teeth into my hand because of the terror and pain he felt as I was trying to pry his body from a pool of glue.
Victor® Electronic Rat Trap The Victor® Electronic Rat Trap is the ultimate in rodent control. It works by delivering a humane, high-voltage shock to kill rats that enter the chamber. This powerful device is capable of killing up to 50 rats per set of fully charged batteries (4 “C” included for each trap), making it a great value when you’re dealing with a sizable infestation. It’s also easy to use! To get started, simply apply a high protein bait in the provided bait cup, place the trap in a location with high rodent activity and turn it on.
AWe do not carry the M210 so we could not tell you what the true difference is between the items, if any. From our research it looks like the M210 is a model number used for ones sold in big box stores like Home Depot so this could be their product code for it. You can contact Victor at 1-800-800-1819 to find out what the differences would be between the two.
Rats that regularly find their way to our dwellings are indeed annoying and nasty pests. Unfortunately, they can surmount all the hurdles and gnaw through everything to get into seemingly impenetrable, hard-to-reach places. Moreover, they transfer serious diseases, attack humans and pets, contaminate food and make a mess. Rat control measures involve traditional and modern methods of extermination, such as sealing up the homes, using rat predators, snap traps, poisonous baits, rat zappers, glue boards and others. In all cases, the best option is to start from the removal of mess (where they find their shelter), water and food sources. You can purchase different types of snap traps or make your own homemade rat trap to get rid of coming pests.

Actually, these rodents will eat just about anything. We were fortunate that we only lost a pack of cheap noodles and was left with only one extra opening in his pack. If left to their own survival instincts – they gotta eat – rats can destroy non-hardened food storage items and spread disease.
I find a splash of Pine Sol to be helpful with dead critter stink. Don’t know if it will deter the buggers from coming to the bait, but it probably won’t, in itself, kill anything else that comes along. Bec is right, ethylene glycol is highly toxic . . . but attracts animals due to its sweet taste. Don’t wan’t to kill the birds and bees and dogs and deer . . . just the rats.
Apparently these have been modified into an inferior design. I had a few (I guess) older model mouse traps that were working fine. I bought four more to spread around, not thinking the design would be any different. But these new ones are impossible to keep set, if you can latch the bar at all. Had one snap while I was baiting another one, with nothing triggering it. The second one snapped as I was trying to place it by sliding it ever-so-gently across the smooth floor. Both happened after several attempts at latching, including grabbing some pliers so the bar might stay put. They are going into the trash. I can catch air easily enough without a trap, but I guess it was fun while it lasted. I couldn’t care less about a refund. I’ll consider the price a lesson learned, and cherish my remaining old ones until wild mice are extinct. Anyone know where I can find some more old ones?
Change of plans. This bucket trap may work for mice but not for this nemesis! As Roy Scheider, star of Jaws, said when he laid eyes on the shark, “Your going to need a bigger boat.” When dealing with Ratzilla and his kin, you’re going to need a bigger bucket!
There are various methods available for people who want to know how to get rid of rats, but if you decide to make an ideal home rat trap with the help of materials at hand, use any of the following methods:
In this video it shows you how to make an easy live mouse trap with just a plastic bottle, twine and toothpicks. This is 100% humane trap. After capturing the mouse, it can be released alive outdoors. It’s easy, safe, humane and convenient to use diy mousetrap.

I bought one after my apartment was infested with roaches that came through the wall from another apartment in my complex next to me. My apartment complex came in and found my place 3 times and it failed to work. So I spoke to Super who I happen to be friends with and he told me to get one of those electric ones that you plug into the wall because that would make it stop. So that day I went out and I purchased one just one plugged it in the wall and believe it or not I’ve never seen one again. Not only did it work against roaches it was pet friendly my cats and I are two of them. Did not react to it at all. I seem to think that they work great not only did it work on that but my friend had brought bunch of bags in from her place that she was staying in and I was failed to be given the information that she had had bed bugs a few days later I seem to get bit a few times all over and noticed that it was probably bedbugs it had been a year since the last time I put in a new plug-in in my plug and I bought said it was good for a year. After I put the new plug-in in it was the same brand I’d gotten in the past it got the bed bugs to go away as well. Now that I have moved into a house I’m noticing this is my second year here I’m having problems with ants I’ve yet to have to put one in my house but I am about to go get one tomorrow and put one on I will repost and let you guys know if the kind of worked for ants or not.
I used 5 gecko lizards in my apartment years ago to get rid of some roaches. after release the lizards hid under the furniture and ate roaches till they were gone ( roaches and lizards ) I guess they followed the food.
Place a trash can beneath the tube. The can should be wide enough to accommodate the falling tube. Place a small pillow, soft cloth, or pad on the bottom of the can to cushion the tube and mouse who will soon be trapped within.
was planning to buy one from a tv online shop. however after going through comments, i am backing out. cant afford such an expensive night lamp! lovely comment by someone asking this to use as hammer 🙂
Ordered two packs. I have been seeing a couple rats in kitchen so I thought I would try these traps over conventional traps. THEY DONT WORK. I have laid out the traps and wake up to find rat prints on the traps but NO rats.
in 2005 I bought a new Acura. Rat damage to the wiring cost $1,500 to repair. I placed a Victor ultrasonic repeller under each (2 cars) engine ( replacing with a new unit about every 4 years). No problems until a month ago- our 2015 Subaru had $2,300 worth of damage to the wiring. Checked the repeller- the light was working, but no sound. (The other still works, no damage.) Replaced the defective unit. They work, but must be loud and close.
I know this is an old post, but you actually want the stairway to heaven in line with the wire. The vermin will attempt to high wire in an effort to get to the bait. If it doesn’t make it to the can, it loses its balance and will try to gain foot on the can. Then it’s bye bye Ratzilla!
The box of traps arrived in a timely fashion and I set to work baiting the traps with peanut butter and setting only two before the rat’s seemingly regularly scheduled dinner time. I placed one along the base of a fence I’d seen it use as its own personal rat highway. And, I placed the second one in the garden among the Chablis peppers and the rat turds that were the size of small logs. The trap along the base of the fence was well situated, directly in the rat’s path and facing the fence, as the instructional videos recommend. The plants along the edge of the yard provide good cover for animals as they move along the outskirts of the yard, obscured from direct line of sight. And, the one in the garden was among the half eaten remains of peppers that had already fallen prey to the rat’s insatiable appetite. Then, the hard part … waiting.
Many companies—including CVS, Dollar Tree, Rite Aid, and Walgreens—have stopped selling glue traps, and many other businesses have stopped using the  traps after hearing from concerned customers. Unfortunately, some companies continue to sell these vile devices.
Third, attach jumper cables to the metal plate at the back of the cage. The clips on the cables should just barely fit onto the edge of the mesh cage. Set the trapdoor loading the spring as directed on the product label. Place the electric cage rat trap diy in a rodent-infested area.
When baiting the trap, it is important to remember a little goes a long way. We recommend using a toothpick amount of peanut butter. Also, the traps should be placed against the wall where rodents primarily travel. The end of the trap where the
I re-baited the trap, turned it on, and checked it the next morning. I could see a rat tail poking out of the trap. I don’t know how they call this thing “no see” when it the tail was impossible to miss. Anyway, I disposed of the rat and reset the trap without applying more bait. Another rat down in just a few hours! Fast forward a couple of weeks and the trap has claimed (I think) 11 rats so far and I’m still on the first set of batteries. Super effective!
We found a simple bucket with some water in it, 500ml coke bottle, wire through the bottle connected to each side of the bucket, peanut butter smeared about on the coke bottle. The rats/mice come to eat the peanut butter and roll off the bottle into the bucket of water. Caught 9 mice within the hour..
If you are concerned about the mice suffering I would not use these. I have seen mice that struggle for several days. But we have deer mice and they can carry the hanta virus which is often fatal. Sometimes this is the only thing that works for me.
