Rodents are creatures of habit—they like to take the same path to and from their nests. So your best bet for catching them is to intercept them as they travel back and forth. Target areas near refrigerators, in pantries, along baseboards, or in attic spaces.
Unfortunately, I never knew just how inhumane glue traps are until I actually used one. Now, I know that there are many reasons never to use glue traps in your home. Not only do they cause slow and agonizing deaths for the animals they trap, they can also be dangerous to humans and animal companions.
Place the bait in the center of a 2-door trap. You can either position the bait directly on the trigger plate or hang it from the top of the trap. Position it away from the trap walls so that it is unreachable from outside of the trap.

Natural Ways to Get Rid of Rats – peppermint & citronella oils! Put at point of entry – they hate the smell. We have tried peppermint oil and it does not work. Rats will simply pass right by where you placed it!
4) Will you be away for long periods from the location where the traps are laid? Snap, Glue, Electronic, and Multiple Catch Traps will either kill or catch mice and hold them at the location of infestation for human disposal intervention. If you plan to be away from the location for weeks or months on end, you may return to a foul smelling home filled with the decaying corpses of mice. You may require a different trap if this is the case, you never want to have to deal with the odor of a dead rat as that is much more work than it has to be.
When I was dealing with an infestation, I learned a lot about rats and how to deal with them. In some ways, they’re fascinating creatures, and knowing how they behave actually helps when it comes to dealing with them.
The model preferred by professionals and infestation-survivors alike is the classic Victor Easy Set. It’s cheap, effective, and does the job in a way often considered to be more humane than some of the ostensibly friendlier options, as it almost always kills on contact.
If you dig a little deeper into the various products, you’ll find that the studies have mixed results. Overall, some ultrasonic pest control devices show some results with certain pests – how’s that for convincing? These products are by no means a quick fix, and none of them claim 100% effectiveness on any pest, so they need to be kept in perspective as a possible contributor to an overall pest management system, not as a magic weapon.
I am terrified of mice, i bought one for each room and my hallway coming into my apt.,,never had mice,,my upstair neighbor was rampet with mice i told her about the U LTRASONIC PEST REPELLENT ,she got a package and put one in each room and hall way,,, in a few days ,,no more mice,, i have used them for years and yes they do work i change to new ones about every three years…everyone in my building has them in their apartments ,, so we’re all protected…
I bought one from Groupon, only 15US$ I just try it today, try to get rid of cockroach, 2 inches big one from my kitchen. I wonder, will it drive it out of the kitchen into my living room? By the way, the using the device as a hammer comment was funny.
We had rats and mice pretty bad our house smelled like a rat cage. I cleaned my house spotless could not get rid of them they would not go after poison or traps they stayed clear of them. I am pregnant and was getting to sick from being home. After being gone at my moms for two weeks because I couldn’t deal with the smell and the rats my husband wanted me home so he got 5 of the small rodent electronic plug ins for our room and bathroom and one big one for our living room and kitchen. I have two dogs haven’t affected them at all. But after my husband plugged all of these in he called me and said he got them. Not even 24 hrs later i came home. my house didn’t smell nearly as bad and haven’t seen any since except for one. cleaned my house again and haven’t seen any droppings or pee stains anywhere. The one I saw I’m pretty sure ran out. My house is spotless and smells amazing and it’s been 2 weeks so I’m pretty sure these work. We have had a rat problem for almost 6 months and now they’re gone.

The Norway rat, also known as the barn rat, brown rat, common rat, gray rat, house rat, water rat, wharf rat, sewer rat, and super rat, originated in northern China. It now is found over most of the USA and some of the warmer regions of Canada. It’s also the most common rat in Europe, including, as you might expect, Norway, and it is found in temperate climates on every continent except Antarctica. Norway rats are relatively large, up to about 16 inches (40 cm) tip of the nose to tip of the tail in length. They have brown or grayish-brown fur. They have small ears and a blunt nose. Their tail is shorter than the rest of their body. Their droppings are about ¾ inch (16-20 mm) long, and have blunt ends. Norway rats prefer lower locations. Soil, sewers, basements, and the ground floors of home are their preferred habitat. They aren’t picky eaters, and they survive weather extremes.
It produces no mess. There will be no blood, just a dead rodent. For cleaning it, you don’t even have to touch it. Just pick the device, and slide the dead animal into the trash can, and set the trap for the next killing. This device kills more than 90% animals which enter it.

Also be sure to keep these traps securely out of the reach of children and pets. You may need to disable and remove them during the day if children and pets are in the area. The trap can also be covered with a large box (make sure there’s enough space above the trap to allow it to snap) with holes cut into either end. The holes must be large enough for the rodent to enter freely. The trap needs to be placed far enough into the box so that a curious child’s arm or an inquisitive paw cannot reach the trap.
Many customers noted that there are some extra useful devices for of Raticator Max Zapper in hard-to-reach places such as attic, area under the house, in the RV, pool house, shed, etc. One is “Rat Tale monitor”. It is available in a plastic mouse form with two blinking red lights instead of eyes that notify you when to empty your Raticator trap. It’s easy-to-use for customers who don’t want to check the trap every few hours.
I purchased a few of the Victor Professional rat trraps and the rats are getting in these traps and walking away. These traps do a good job on mice and smaller rats but the large ones are escaping. I wish Victor would put stronger springs on their traps. It would be a great improvement on these otherwise excellent traps.

Glue traps are dangerous to human health—in fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Health Canada caution against their use! Animals who are trapped on these devices often void their bowels, potentially exposing anyone who handles the traps to hantavirus.
My Response: Yes, it’s more common for rats to enter a house during cooler winter weather. To answer your questions, no, there is definitely no repellent that will keep them away. But to your other question, how to find their entry points, that’s the vital thing. It basically just takes a very detailed inspection of the home, including every part of the roof, all the vents, the plumbing, etc. Once the entry areas are sealed shut, the rat problem goes away forever. A repellent, even if one did work, would only be a band-aid.
Trusted by thousands of users, Havahart Animal Trap is made of rust-resistance wire mesh with steel reinforcements. It’s properly galvanized which maximizes its resistivity towards rust and corrosion. This is one of the best outdoor rat traps on the market.
If a rat smells a food on another rat’s breath, it will eat that food. Actually, rats need to smell a combination of carbon disulphide (or “rat breath”) and a food odor to feel comfortable eating a new food. Once one rat takes a bait, others will compete for it. The best way to make sure this happens is to put out a bait food on traps you have not set for several days before you set the traps.
