We’ve tried all manner of rat execution, but this one really works! We are So impressed with the ease of this one, we just ordered another two! Nice to order something and have it actually do what it is advertised to do. Highly recommend.
If you see a rat in your home, then chances are there are more where that one came from. According to allbusiness.com, one female rat can bread at 2 months of age and can produce as many as 22 pups in one litter; and one female rat can have as many as six litters in one year. Rats present a number of problems to your home, most notably health issues—rats are known to carry disease. If you suspect a rat problem, consider using Tomcat rat traps. Armed with Tomcat traps, all you need to do is set them up.
Here’s the picture of the top cover that I used, didn’t any luck with it neither. I have laid a commercial sticky trap, didn’t have any luck with it neither. It was sitting under my bed for almost 2 weeks now. Until my wife saw 2 of them running around, chasing each other like in a fight, as if not scared of humans. So she put it along their path where it passed through in one direction. Sure enough when it came back, swooop! Ssstick! And it caught it. Ever wonder about the other one? Well, as her story goes, the other smaller one then saw the opportunity to attack the stuck mouse. So it jumped into it like she’s not watching. Here’s they’re picture.
Ideal if you don’t wish to deal with the disposal of dead mice and rodents. This model is designed to be reused multiple times for years. It can be opened, and refilled with bait periodically. Its pet-safe design means pets (and kids) won’t easily access the bait.
Once the wire is through both ends, make sure the wire extends a few inches past the bucket on both edges. With the threaded can centered over the bucket, crimp the wire at both ends of the can. This will keep the can sliding to the edge of the bucket which would defeat the trap.
When I finally succeeded in my task, a battered and disheveled mouse, with missing clumps of fur, limped off into the night. Many trapped animals end up breaking or chewing off their own limbs in their struggle for freedom.
Price:  There are about fifteen different models available that cost between $40 and $50 dollars.  There are a few models priced at over $70.  The higher priced models offer NO benefits over the lower priced ones.

Flatten the tube along one edge. In order to make the the tube sit on a flat surface without it rolling about, you’ll need to create a flat edge on the tube. Press a long crease in the tube along its length, then press another crease in the tube approximately 40 degrees around from the first crease. Stick a ruler in the tube to further flatten the space between the shortest distance from one crease to the other.

Other types of rat traps include the snap trap, live trap, and adhesive trap. The snap trap is probably the most familiar, simple, and traditional type available. It operates using a combination of a spring mechanism and heavy metal bar designed to snap the rodent’s neck when it comes into contact with bait. The snap trap is more dangerous to set than other types and is not always completely effective, nor is it considered the most humane way to solve the problem of an infestation. However, it is one of the cheapest options available.
Please pass this on to Bill Kelliher… it seems that users can’t answer other users comments. I have had one for 5 + years and am ordering an other. At first it didn’t work and at the time the how to use instructions were different and of course I didn’t read the instructions but called int to say that it wasn’t any good….. Here’s how I was told to use the trap and it works very well: 1- leave the zapper OFF and put peanuts on the floor close to the entrance 2-wait till the pea nuts have been eaten 3-repeat step 2 4-still with zapper off place peanuts half way into the trap and again wait till all peanuts are gone 5-turn zapper ON and place peanuts on the kill plate and VOILA a dead rat. NOTE: Rats are very intelligent and if bait is placed at the back on the first try, the rat will go in for the food but very slowly and will cense the electricity with it’s whiskers and back off. By doing the above steps it will build the rat’s confidence and it will charge right in to eat. AND BY BY RAT.
Each of these traps is set similarly. For the TOMCAT SecureKill Rat Trap, place peanut butter or TOMCAT Attractant Gel into the bait well prior to setting the trap. Pull the set bar back until you hear a click to let you know that the trap is set.
Set out unset rat traps can be buried in grain, sawdust, or similar materials within an empty cardboard box or pie pan. Place the rat bait in small pieces near it and above it with the hidden trap below. Once the rats start taking the bait, set the traps. This set up will acclimate the rats to the traps, once adapted, set enough traps to kill a large percentage of the population before the rodents become ” trap shy” This method is called mass trapping, catching them at a higher rate than they can repopulate and become shy of the trap.

To remove the glue from floors or other nonporous surfaces, try oil if the surface won’t be damaged, or use turpentine, paint thinner, or Goo Be Gone, or similar product. Test an inconspicuous area first. Let the solvent sit for several minutes, wipe it off with a dry cloth, then wash with mild detergent.
Trapping rats can be frustrating as well as a little gross, but in the end, it will all be worth it. There are a variety of ways to trap rats, with multiple different trap types out there that will catch a rat however you deem appropriate. One thing that is universally true, though, no matter the trap – peanut butter. To successfully protect your home against invading wild rats, be sure to use peanut butter as bait. Because just like us, rats and peanut butter seem to go together incredibly well.
The next day, I awoke to what sounded like an intruder in the kitchen. In actuality, it was a mouse who was trying so violently to escape a glue trap that I mistook him for a living being hundreds of times his size. He took deep, shivering breaths, and every so often he would muster all of his energy and violently thrash in an attempt to free himself.
A snap trap is a wooden, metal, or plastic trap with a powerful snap hinge intended to kill rodents instantly on contact. Snap traps are typically used with some form of bait to lure the rodent to the trap. A snap trap is different from a multiple-catch or live-catch trap. Snap traps require you to dispose of the dead rodent, whereas multiple-catch or live-catch traps allow humane capture and release of mice.
Make sure that the plates are clear of any debris, especially urine or hair from a recent kill that may interfere with the unit’s proper function. Remember, both plates need to be clean so that the electric circuit is made complete by the rodent stepping on both.
I put a bit of peanut butter on the center plastic bit and put this under my drawer. Finally caught the mouse that’s been running around my house for weeks! We haven’t found out where it comes in from, but at least we know that we can catch them! Thank you for these awesome traps! My brother and I took it to the next town over and released it in front of the forest. The little fellow couldn’t wriggle off. We used dishwasher soap and some water to set it free. No more rat poo around the house! Mom finally relieved. No more skittering noises in the night! Adios, El Magnifico!
There are also non-spring loaded multiple catch mouse traps such as the Tin Cat Mouse Trap.  The Tin Cat Mouse Trap is only good at catching mice, it is too small for capturing rats.  Basically, mice will enter the trap through an opening, and fall into the trap by means of a 1 way door.

overall we’re pleased with the effectiveness and if we had used a little more forethought and tied a string to the trap this last time, the rat wouldn’t have bounced away under the insulation somewhere in our attic. also, we had it placed in the open in a ‘run’ and not as they describe in their videos which probably contributes to the suffering bit since the head isn’t being guillotined properly.
Use two traps in the position mentioned above or place them length-wise, end-to-end (red “V’s” on traps pointing towards each other) so that the bait pedal end will be encountered first as mice approach from either direction. For trickier spots like walls, air ducts, and crawl spaces, check out our article here.
Thought about using a garbage can instead of a bucket. Can catch many at once! Also love the idea of putting sunflower seeds over the water. Also, can possibly lower the wire and roller so the rat has to bend down more and may fall in?

I’m not aware or rats covering their holes. They may push debris back behind them as the gnaw their way through your home. To answer your question about the best bait, are we dealing with a black rat or a brown rat? Depending on the time of the year, you might want to use nest building material as bait.

Baiting rat traps with peanut butter is a good way to catch a rat. One just positions a pea-size glob of peanut butter on the rat trap and waits for the rat to bite. Positioning several rat traps in areas where rats have been spotted or rat droppings have been noticed is a good strategy. It can take several days of baiting and re-baiting traps to catch a rat.
The best bait for your trap may depend on the species of your rats. In North America, two species are most prevalent: the Norway rat and the roof rat. The Norway rat is usually found at or below ground level in burrows, basements, sewers and dumpsters. The roof rat is usually found higher up – in trees, cliffs, attics and higher levels of a home or warehouse.
I know this is an old post, but you actually want the stairway to heaven in line with the wire. The vermin will attempt to high wire in an effort to get to the bait. If it doesn’t make it to the can, it loses its balance and will try to gain foot on the can. Then it’s bye bye Ratzilla!

For rodent control, anecdotal data may indicate that these devices can provide some level of control for a short period of time. But rodents seem to learn to avoid the mechanisms used. Mice quickly become accustomed to regularly repeated sounds. Ultrasonic sounds have limited use in rodent control because they are directional and do not penetrate behind objects. Testing of sound devices shows that about half the sound energy is gone within 15 feet of the device.

Rat traps have been around as long as there have been rats, and no trap is ever going to be 100% effective at eliminating a rat problem. Unless rats are trapped out early before they colonize an area, you’ll never catch every rat because they will eventually figure out what a trap means, and they will avoid it at all costs. You can check out the rat trap buyer’s guide listed below for more information on the traps themselves to determine which type is best for you.
I gave it 4 stars because occasionally the rat gets away. Sometimes the trap is sprung with no sign of a rat, and sometimes there’s a rat arm inside the trap. It makes me feel a little sad to think of the rats with crutches and prosthetic legs. I assume, in their world, it’s hard to get a job as a chef, lab rat, running in a rat race, or zodiac model with a missing front leg. Although, I hear the rats in this area have a strong union with excellent health care.

Snap Mouse Traps: In use for over a 100 years, these are simple spring-loaded devices that have a baiting-platter and “kill device”, which is either a spring-released kill bar or a serrated “kill jaw” which powerfully snaps back on the rodent that catches and kills it. It’s an incredibly powerful product, and it’s quite efficient in catching these little pests.
The process of zapping a rat often results in the rat releasing the contents of its bladder.  If there is a build up of rat urine in the trap it will eventually foul the contact wires in the unit.  Take the time to clean the inside of the trap with a damp cloth whenever it looks dirty inside.  Make sure the power is disconnected and the batteries are removed before cleaning the trap.
Snap traps should be placed in areas of highest rodent activity. These areas can be determined by inspecting the premises for the highest concentration of rodent signs. Look for fecal pellets, tracks, runways, gnawing damage, grease marks, burrows, urine stains (made visible by a black or ultraviolet flashlight), rodent sounds, and live or dead rodents. High activity areas may include darkened corners, along walls, and behind appliances or other large objects.
Place the trap in an enticing position. Place it in areas like along a wall or a high-traffic area near a mouse hole. When the mouse enters the bottle to eat the cheese, pull back on the string looped around the skewer sticking out of the bottle’s bottom. The bottle will snap closed on the mouse, trapping it within.
We apologize if our Easy Set® design was not to your liking and want to assure you that Victor® continues to manufacture rat traps that use the original metal pedal design. We strive to present a variety of traps in order to accommodate the varied preferences of our consumers.
Ammonia-soaked cotton balls or rags will drive mice and rats out (they hate the smell). Place them in areas where the animals, their droppings, or nests have been seen, and be sure to give them a few days to leave.
Obtain a one liter plastic water bottle. A similar bottle would work as well, but one liter water bottles are ideal because they are long and narrow, and often have flat sides which allow them to sit undisturbed. You could substitute a two liter bottle as well. Whatever type of bottle you choose, ensure it is transparent and composed of thin, pliable plastic.
There are many traps on the market that promise to help homes rid their rat problem. Perhaps no trap is as good as the Tomcat Rat Snap. This black, boxy trap is unlike any other out there. It weighs only 4.8 ounces and measures a small 14.2 x 9 x 5.5 inches. Made by the Made by Motomco Company, they have designed a whole line of rodent prevention products to suit both business and commercial applications. This trap is just one part of a larger series for those who have a serious infestation problem. These are much safer than traditional traps, and they have an aggressive design that makes them simple to use. The best thing is these traps can be used time and time again. If you need to wash the unit, it can easily be put into a dishwasher too, as they are even dishwasher safe.
Tomcat Rat Snap Trap – safe, effective and working option to remove pesky rats. The trap has many benefits like the one when you don’t have to worry about getting your fingers caught. The trap has aggressive and powerful design. You can set Tomcat by hand or foot.
It might be best not to completely rely on these devices for pest control. Your best bet is to call your local Orkin Branch Office and have an Orkin Pest Specialist come to your home and provide you with a thorough rodent inspection. Your Orkin Pest Specialist will develop a customized, scientifically proven, treatment protocol that best fits your needs.
Grains and seeds – One of the more natural rat and mouse foods are grains and seeds, whether they have been stored for later use or remain attached to a plant. In agricultural settings, mice and rats are attracted to grain storage bins and farm fields prior to harvest. In a more suburban setting, they may seek out tasty seeds from your flowerbed or garden. They may also raid bird seed containers, sneak into sheds where you have stored grass seed or venture into a cabinet for unprotected cooking and baking ingredients.
Dogs and cats are usually too large to enter an electronic trap or to be injured by a small containment cage. That being said, keep an eye on your pup or kitty anyway. By contrast, if you’re a business owner with a large infestation and the need to set traps outdoors around your property, then snap, live, or glue traps can work to your advantage to rid your property of pests quickly and cheaply. Research on the desired product is also important so that you become an informed consumer. Knowing how to properly set the trap can prevent injury to yourself and to your family.
You are going to want to do absolutely everything you can to use the best mouse trap technology along with the best mouse trap best to outsmart these little critters. Otherwise, you are going to find that the trap is empty and that even though right mouse trap bait is not enough to capture them.
When the electronic PestNoMore Zapper makes a kill, both its notification light and alarm will alert you to the catch, making this a decent alternative to more traditional snapping, poison, and glue-based options. However, it’s definitely on the expensive side.
The rat, enticed into the box by a yummy treat at the entrance and smeared on the back wall , steps on a metal plate.  This triggers an electric shock which – as long as the batteries are full or nearly full – kills within a couple of seconds.
Rats are comparatively easy to trap with snap traps, because they are curious and explore a bit, and are generally fearless. Many types of traps work, but the old standard wooden snap traps are actually the most effective. Just spread some peanut butter on the trip pan. However – bait is actually of least concern. You actually don’t need any bait at all. You will have far more success if, before you even start rat trapping, you seal shut every possible entry hole using steel mesh, which rats are unable to chew through. This first step is by far the most important thing, and the only crucial thing you must do for permanent rat control. Once that is done, catching the rats is a cinch, regardless of bait. Once the building is sealed, and the rats are trapped inside, set at least a dozen or more snap traps in the attic, on areas of rat activity (look for droppings and trails in the insulation). You actually don’t need bait, but it does help so bait with peanut butter. That’s all you really need. Sure, chocolate, or slim jims, or pineapple, or pretty much any food will work. But since peanut butter is easy to apply and works as well as anything else, that’s what I go with. But remember, setting some rat traps with peanut butter randomly in the house or attic will catch a few rats, but not all of them, and the problem will last as long as you have open holes leading into your house. Read more about rat trapping for tips and proper techniques.
Well we’ve come along way in mouse traps but as you can see sometimes simpler is better. I’m not sure if any of these will usurp old Henry’s contraption but when you have a mouse infestation who cares, as long as you get your mouse. Before you get to cocky however, consider that the mouse has also had 112 years to study the problem and he hasn’t been sitting idle. Almost all of my mouse calls come after the do it yourself bug man has failed to round up his furry friend and I marvel just how a mouse can escape some of the gauntlets I see. Maybe while we’ve kept to the simple time tested methods the nation of mice have spread the word and gone high tech. My advice? Always call the expert!
With this black trap, there will be no escape for any rat or mouse. Once inside the 1.75 x 3.25 x 6.25-inch compartment, the only escape for the creature is dead. The trap uses superior smart circuit technology to sense the intruder and then activates a high-voltage electric shock.
Even though no one truly knows the origin of the black rat, the earliest traces of human co-habitation come from Southeast Asia, although there are fossils of the black rat from prehistoric times in Europe. Needless to say, this symbiotic relationship between rats and humans happened early on, and the species has become so specialized, many scientists speculate that if the human population ever died out, black rats would go extinct too.

Even after setting out the unset rat traps and following the procedure in step #9, you may still have rats that will not go into the snap traps. There are alpha and beta rats in a rat population. The first rats to be caught in snap traps are the beta rats (inferior rats). The superior alpha rats are much more cautious around the snap traps. At this point, use a live trap. Rodenticides may be another choice for you at this point. Rodent baits (the strong single feed baits) are more costly, but will cause much more pressure on the rodent population as they readily take the bait and die.
Rats have been the bane of human civilization for as long as there have been humans. These enterprising rodents were originally forest dwellers that took their rightful place in the animal kingdom. However, as the human population grew and developed civilizations, rats adapted to a life of living off human food waste. The rats targeted by rat traps have become pests and are known specifically as black rats, taxonomically named rattus rattus.

What luck! I assessed the damage, and the distance between the place the mouse munches on the bait, and where the trap comes down is PERFECT for an averagely sized mouse. It comes right down on the back of the neck/ upper spine. If you know any basic physiology, you know this is ideal. It applied enough pressure to break the mouse’s neck, but not enough to make my bathroom a gore fest. I’ve attached a picture, because it’s really not gross to look at, at all. Unless you’re bothered by a slightly misshapen mouse.

The most common type of rat trap is the classic snap trap made by Victor.  The trap is so popular because it is cheap and effective.  Victor makes two versions of their classic trap; Standard and Professional.
Snap traps are the most practical option due to their low cost which lets you affordably place and set many traps at once.  However, snap traps are a little hard to use and some folks prefer other options.
If you are squeamish about bloody mouse carcasses, then this easy-to-deploy plastic and steel trap is an ideal choice. Simply squeeze the conveniently designed lipped-handle back, and the trap is ready for use. Its large bait area makes it simple to place your choice of bait.

Set outdoor traps on narrow paths and under foliage. Rats can be a little harder to trap outdoors because it’s harder to predict their movements. Try placing traps along narrow locations where you’ve observed rats before, like tree branches, the top edges of fences, gutters, and so on. You may also want to place a few traps under dense foliage, as rats love the safety and cover that thick bushes and shrubs can provide.
The Rat Snap Trap has a removable cup so baiting can also be done prior to setting the trap. After baiting, open the trap by pinching, like opening a clothespin, until you hear a click to indicate it has locked into place.
We had mouse problems in our house, and it came down to finding all of the entry points and sealing them up once we (humanely) caught the mice. The best way to work out where they are entering is to watch where they run when they see you enter a room =) As for your car, well, it shouldn’t be as tricky as a house to find the gaps for them to enter.

You could substitute a two liter bottle as well. Whatever type of bottle you choose, ensure it is transparent and composed of thin, pliable plastic.
Rat Bait – What is the Best Bait to Catch Rats? Remember, the only thing that matters is that you seal the house shut. After that, trapping is easy! And when you do start trapping, location of the snap trap is far more important than the type of food you put on the rat trap. If you’re using a cage trap bait it with peanut butter and seeds, or bread or whatever you want. And if you’re using the term “rat bait” in search of rat poison, be aware that poison is just plain ineffective, and has a chance of leaving stinky rats in your attic or walls.
How it Works – Mice and small rats enter the trap through a side hole.  After entering the trap, they step on a small “trip” plate that releases the entire floor and sweeps them into a holding chamber.  This revolving floor is very gentle to mice and can capture several mice at the same time.  The floor is similar to a “paddle wheel”.  This wheel is spring loaded and will reset itself.  Up to 15 mice can be captured with 1 winding of the spring.  A black spring knob is located on the outside of the trap. This knob is wound by hand several times to engage the spring.
It’s just as important to check live traps as it is to check lethal traps. Leaving a rat in a live trap for a long period of time can be potentially deadly, especially in very hot or cold climates where the rat is vulnerable to exposure.
Though it is designed without any killing action, the Trapro Humane is quite functional as a pest catcher. Available in two sizes, its door features a clever locking system that’s easy to set and is highly resistant to tampering from within.
After freeing the mouse, I checked the other glue traps for any struggling family members and found that a number of other individuals—including a ladybug and a big, beautiful moth—had been trapped. These glue traps often ensnare other small animals, too, including birds, squirrels, chipmunks, snakes, gerbils, and kittens.
The Raticator Electronic Rat Trap works extremely well and can safely be used indoors around children and pets.  It’s our #1 pick for indoor rat and mice control, and the only trap that kills both mice and large rats.

About 30 kills with Energizer Lithium batteries. Dimensions: approximately 4 in. x 4 in. x 10 in.
To date all total there are 4400 patented mouse traps while only about 20 make any money. The first trap was invented back in 1897 by James Henry Atkinson a British inventor and his prototype of the wooden snap trap with springs and wires has not changed much at all since then. In the 1980’s glue boards were invented and widespread use was like a wild fire until people realized that the mouse died a slow and agonizing death, usually squealing and dying from exhaustion. Emerson wrote the famous line;
How it works – the rat is lured into the trap by using a lure or food.  When the rat enters the trap, it steps on a metal “trip” plate at the rear of the trap and releases a door.  This seals the rat inside the trap so that it can’t escape.
Experts say this is the next evolution in rat trap design. The unit is created from high-impact plastic and various other rust-resistant metals. When you buy this one, you buy it for life. The general design ensures both durability and a long lifespan. The Rat Snap is easy to use, highly effective and it is safe. There is no chance of catching your finger in it like older style traps. Customers are saying that even the savviest of rats are no match for the Tomcat. With its room to amply put bait, they can’t resist. All you have to do is open the trap and set it perpendicular to a wall. Put it right in the rat’s main travel pathways for best use. This trap works best 5 – 100 feet from a nest or food source.
Get rid of rats fast with this Victor Electronic Rat Trap. A more humane alternative to traditional snap traps, the Victor Electronic Rat Trap kills rats using a high-voltage shock. The bait placed along the back wall of the trap, lures the rat inside and onto the metal plates. Its advanced smart circuit technology senses the rodent and instantly delivers 7,000 volts of electricity for two minutes, ensuring a permanent kill. The Victor Electronic Rat Trap kills up to 50 rats per set of 4 ‘C’ batteries (not included).
Consider moving the mouse traps to another location where you have mouse activity. If setting up your mouse traps directly next to the high traffic areas is not working, try setting up the traps adjacent to or just a bit away from these high traffic areas.

The Advantek Multi-Animal Catch & Release Rodent Trap has no moving parts. Just bait and place the trap in an area with known rat activity. A hinged door on the bottom allows humane release. Read Full Review

Rats tend to be cautious of new objects in their territory. Pre-bait your trap to get your rat used to it before you set it up for a catch. To pre-bait your trap, tie the trap doors open and place bait inside. Position your trap and wait about a week before setting it up for a catch.

A: Try to use the least amount of bait possible in any style mouse trap used.  The more bait you use, the easier it is for rodents to remove it without disturbing the traps. The goal is to have them apply extra force to the trigger pedal with their nose/tongue to remove the bait.  To do this press a small amount of bait into the bait pedal.
They never saw it coming… they came wave upon wave into the mouth of the beast. Eager to reach their last meal they crawl inside, but they find only death. The bodies pile higher and higher. The beast shows no mercy and spares no rodent. Its appetite is unending… consuming rodents and batteries without remorse.
As a pest control technician , I could confirm that these products work perfectly for catching all forms of rats; whether they are babies or adults. In California where I work at, we have issues with roof and Norwegian rats and I could say that I haven’t had any issues with them. At times it can get messy but they are a clean and effective snap trap. Well done Victor and I hope my company continues to buy from you.
Along with that, you need to be careful while setting up these traps because they may hurt you. After setting them, these should be placed at some place where children or pets can’t reach because if they accidently touch them it can cause injury to them.
I had far to many misses with Victor snap traps until I repeatedly tested the trap and realized that when the trap triggered and the bow flew over it actually pulled the trap out from under the mouse or rat. I now screw the the mouse traps to a 6″ long piece of 2×1. It’s simple, stabilizes the trap, and make handling easier. I use a 8″ piece of 2×4 for the rat traps. One screw does the job and I no longer have flying rat traps.

If you’re using a round bottle rather than a bottle with roughly rectangular sides, it is more difficult to gauge where to place the marks. Try to place the marks about 90 degrees apart from each other around the circumference of the bottle, two on one side of the cut and two on the other.
It’s important to re-state, though, that I used it only after I’d spent time getting rid of a large infestation of rodents in my chicken run.  Until you have the population under control this trap won’t be of much use because it can only kill one at a time.
POWERFUL RODENT KILLERS ⚡ With over 30% more force than traditional traps, a hair trigger sensor, and jaws designed to kill without breaking the skin, these rodent killers are the ultimate protection against rats, gophers and other pests.
Place trap facing wall where you see rat activity. Press set-arm with your foot or hand. You will hear a ‘click’ when set. Bait well should be placed perpendicular to the wall with the bait facing wall. Target areas with high rat activity where smudge marks or droppings are discovered. Place traps at 5-10 feet intervals.
The Victor Metal Pedal Rat Trap is proven by over 100 years of use. Easy to set, easy to bait with a success rate that is second to none. Inexpensive enough to dispose of the entire trap, rat and all.
I re-baited the trap, turned it on, and checked it the next morning. I could see a rat tail poking out of the trap. I don’t know how they call this thing “no see” when it the tail was impossible to miss. Anyway, I disposed of the rat and reset the trap without applying more bait. Another rat down in just a few hours! Fast forward a couple of weeks and the trap has claimed (I think) 11 rats so far and I’m still on the first set of batteries. Super effective!
Buy at least several traps. Once you’ve identified a rat problem, you’ll want to work fast. The quicker you can start trapping rats, the less time the population of rats will have a chance to expand. Start by heading to your local hardware store and buying plenty of rat traps — the more you’re able to set, the better chance you stand of trapping rats. Most disposable rat traps are available for quite cheap, so it’s not a bad idea to buy one or two more than you think you’ll need. If the extra money prevents major rat problems in the future, it will have been a wise investment. See the steps below for information on the different types of rat traps available.
I bought 9 of these rat traps and only caught 1 rat. the traps are always blinking and guess what NO MOUSE!! food is gone lights blinking like something is in there…fresh batteries every time. waste of money
When I was dealing with an infestation, I learned a lot about rats and how to deal with them.  In some ways, they’re fascinating creatures, and knowing how they behave actually helps when it comes to dealing with them.
If you encounter an animal who is stuck to a glue trap, place a few drops of cooking oil or baby oil in between the glue and the animal, and gently work the animal free. Be sure to keep oil use to a minimum, otherwise oiled animals can perish from exposure later on. While removing the animal from the glue, slide tissue or paper underneath freed body parts to prevent them from getting re-stuck. Once free, active and alert rodents can be released outdoors during good weather within a one-block radius of where they were discovered. Lethargic or imperiled animals, or animals caught during extreme weather, should be rushed to a local veterinarian or wildlife rehabilitator or call PETA for guidance.
You can usually find out their hiding places if you can hear the mice making noises in the your home or attic. They are usually running inside walls or dark corners of your house, the more stuff you have lying around your property, the more places these mice can hide in. You don’t want that because that means there is more room for them to populate and it makes it that much harder to stop.
Wash your hands and your trap when finished. When you’ve disposed of your rat, remove your gloves and give your hands a thorough washing to remove any bacteria particulate matter that may have passed from the rat to you. After this, you may carefully wash your trap to clean it for future use (except in the case of glue traps, which aren’t meant to be reused.)
The humane rat traps on this list were chosen because they are easy to use, easy to set and effective at capturing a rat without doing it any harm. But just remember that no matter how well a trap is engineered, if another rats sees one get caught, the chances are it may never venture near that trap again. These trap wary rats may have to be caught using a different method to fully eradicate any substantial population, and humane traps may not be the answer.
Within seconds, the rate will lie lifeless inside the trap. It features a tunnel design and a built-in safety switch for added protection to pets and children and runs on 4AA batteries that will eliminate as many as 100 rats or mice before new ones are required.
If you have a hammer and nails handy, you don’t just have to place snap traps on the floor — you also have the option of nailing them to walls, doors, and other vertical surfaces. This can be useful for catching rats as they travel along steep surfaces.
Using the proper bait can make your rat trapping more effective, but it will still be useless if you haven’t selected the right types of traps and laced them correctly. You should always opt for snap traps since these are highly effective and will kill the rats instantly, making them a humane method. Glue traps are inhumane and not as effective and live cage traps require you to relocate the rat, which is a sure death sentence since these rodents keep to a small area. In addition to placing the traps correctly, you also need to use enough. Start with a dozen traps at a minimum since rats are social creatures.
Up until 1996, more than 4,400 trap patents were issued, more than ninety-five percent of these being awarded to amateur inventors, which truly makes the trap a consumer’s invention in most every shape and type possible, electric or not.

Here are 5 mouse traps, available on Amazon, that you may want to consider. If you like what you read, order them now, they (should) arrive tomorrow or the day after, and the following day, you’ll be 90% closer to eliminating your mice problems for good:
Alternatively, use a live trap. It definitely bares mentioning that you don’t necessarily need to kill a rat to trap it. Live traps, which usually come in the form of small steel cages, can catch rats without harming them in any way. These sorts of traps usually work by enticing a rat to grasp a piece of bait positioned over a pressure-sensitive pad. When the rat steps on the pad, a trap door swings shut, trapping the rat in the cage. If you’re using a live trap, be sure to use one small enough to prevent a rat from escaping. As a general rule, if a rat can fit its head between a set of bars, it can easily squeeze through. Some rats can even fit through spaces as narrow as 1/2 inch (1.27 centimeters) wide.
Proper trapping of the pests. These products need to be setup simultaneously to take advantage of the first night. Most of these pests will be drastically more cautious on the second night compared to the first night. This behavior needs to be taken advantage of.
5) Are mice entry spots located in “sensitive” areas of the house? If the mice enter or frequent sensitive parts of the home, such as near expensive carpeting or upholstery, then you may not want to risk blood splatters using a Snap Trap. Equally though, there is a risk of mice rolling over Glue Traps onto those surfaces. An Electronic Trap or a Baiting Station might work best in such situations.
Consider moving the mouse traps to another location where you have mouse activity. If setting up your mouse traps directly next to the high traffic areas is not working, try setting up the traps adjacent to or just a bit away from these high traffic areas.

A: When you turn on the trap, the red light will appear one time and fade away. This confirms the trap is on and working properly and the light turns off to save battery. The red light will also blink to indicate a successful kill; however, in order to conserve battery, it only flashes about every 7 seconds.

Trapping pesky rats has never been easier than with this excellent Set option. The trap is set in 1 simple step – easy and fast. The rat can be released with the help of lever while you stand away from the trap.
As someone who owns rats they are very unlikely to carry rabies. They die within weeks of contracting it. And besides you should have your rabies vaccine. Rats are wonderful companions if you know what to do.
Lay the bottle on its side with the hinge on the table. With a black marker, mark two points on the side of the bottle approximately one centimeter from the place where it has been cut, one on the left side of the cut and one on the right side of the cut. The marks should be located half a centimeter from the top edge of the bottle. Rotate the bottle 180 degrees along its horizontal axis and place symmetrical marks on the other side.

Beware of quality issues.  Some plastic rat traps are made from cheap brittle plastic and break easily.  The Trapper T-Rex Rat Snap Trap is made in the USA and is of the highest quality. It’s the plastic snap trap most commonly used by Professional Pest Control companies. It’s my number #2 pick for trapping rats.
Manufacturers claim that glue boards are safe for use, but there are many safety concerns that don’t come on the label. In some cases, people will try to beat glue-trapped animals  to death with a shovel or stick, as it is nearly impossible to safely or humanely euthanize them. While trapped animals are still alive, anyone handling the glue board risks being bitten by the them
This is a great mouse trap. Don’t let haters of this device fool you. Unfortunately, some mice just learn to deal with traps, and that’s that. They are mammals, they can learn, and rodents are pretty sharp. Sucks to be you if you have mice that are too smart for this type of trap, and you will have to put out some kind of poison, more likely than not. This DOES NOT make the device faulty!
There is no houseguest quite as unwanted as the highly adaptable, grossly destructive, and possibly even dangerous wild rat. Rats have been notable throughout history as carriers of fleas and diseases, as well as unwelcome vermin that will ruin both your food and your house. They can be destructive, disturbing, and even a little scary. This is why it is important to counteract their movements in and around your home with a variety of different rat traps – and peanut butter. Because having a trap means nothing until you have something as alluring as peanut butter. Right?
Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights? Read more.
Stinky, sulfurous smells attract rats. In fact, an extract of sulfur odor all by itself will encourage rats to eat wood, cardboard, and other non-nutritive materials. The stinkier the cheese, the more attractive it is to brown rats.
One of the cruelest methods of killing animals that exists today is the glue trap. These devices consist of pieces of cardboard, fiberboard, or plastic coated with a sticky adhesive designed to ensnare any small animal who wanders across or lands on its surface.
Size the barbwire so that it is exactly the shape and dimensions of the bottle’s opening and cut off the piece. Glue this piece of barbwire over the top opening of the bottle. In practice, the barbwire should replicate a swinging door.
Look for rat droppings as signs of high-traffic areas. One of the biggest tell-tale signs of a rat problem is the presence of small, brown, pellet-like droppings. Anywhere you find these droppings is an acceptable place to put a trap — if a rat has been there before, there’s a good chance it will be there again.
Remember: Glue traps cause slow, agonizing deaths for the animals they trap. Never use glue traps, and share this with your family and friends so that they will learn the truth about these vile devices, too. Mice and rats are intelligent, sensitive animals who are just as capable of pain and suffering as the cats and dogs we share our homes with.
I cut a gob from the original can (using a heated butter knife) and placed it in a metal coffee can, then gently heated it over a low flame.( I did this in my shop, because you certainly don’t want this stuff on your kitchen stove!) Be very careful to not get it too hot, as it will burn. Next time I will use a makeshift double boiler arrangement and heat it with hot water.
When the electronic PestNoMore Zapper makes a kill, both its notification light and alarm will alert you to the catch, making this a decent alternative to more traditional snapping, poison, and glue-based options. However, it’s definitely on the expensive side.
Rats and mice can do a lot of nibbling in their relatively short lives. What’s really surprising is despite all that nibbling and gnawing, a rat’s stomach is approximately half the size of a human thumb. Adult female rats weigh about 225 grams, and males weigh up to 267 grams. As a result, they can eat approximately 15 to 20 grams per day. What are they filling their little rodent tummies with? A variety of edibles:
The answer?  Put a trap (any trap, not just an electric one) close to a wall or boundary fence where you know or suspect the rodents are running. Make sure the opening of the trap is closest to the wall.

Be sure to position the snap trap so that the baited end of each trap is placed perpendicular to the wall. Rodents generally travel with their bodies against a wall for protection.  It may be necessary to bait a rat trap without setting the trap and allow the bait to be eaten a couple of times. Then set the trap with more bait. Rats tend to shy away from new objects so this method gets them accustomed to the trap.  Mice are more inquisitive than rats, so pre-baiting is less likely to be needed.
It is important to maintain the appearance that the papered-over coffee can is capable of supporting the mouse when it walks across it. Instead of cutting a solid “X”, you could try poking small, closely-spaced holes in an “X” shape across the surface of the paper.

Experts will tell you that even if you skip the bait but place the rat trap in the right location, you will have success. On the other hand, the best bait and a poorly placed trap are unlikely to lead to results. This involves inspecting the attic and looking for the rat paths. These rodents go over the same paths repeatedly and you can typically recognize them by their grease and droppings. Place the traps along these paths and you don’t really need to use bait. If it makes you feel better, put some peanut butter or dried fruit on the traps and wait for it to work.
Rats and mice don’t see well, especially when it’s dark, so they follow baseboards, walls, and other straight lines.  When the glue board is placed along a straight line, the rat will usually run into it.  Sometimes they will jump over it, and if that is the case, then using 2 glue boards end to end is the solution.
If you place the trigger bar on the right side of the bait pad towards the “S” then the trigger is set to “Sensitive”.  This means that the trap is harder for you to set but easier for the rat to trigger.
Place the trap where you have seen signs of rodent activity or along the wall where rodents primarily travel. The end of the trap where the yellow pedal is baited should be placed flush against the wall.
Rat traps are commonly baited with cheese, peanut butter, or bacon. The best choice of rat bait, however, depends on the type of rat you are trying to catch. Here are ten easy tips for choosing the best bait for trapping and removing rats. You can find more information here How to Get Rid of Rats or if you discover you have rats in your attic then read this article: Rats in the Attic: What Do You Do?
If you want to rid your home of both rats and mice and don’t want any mess, this Rat Zapper can do the job. What is the Rat Zapper? It’s not one of those expensive ultrasonic devices that claims to work but doesn’t do a thing. This device used ordinary bait or pet food to lure in the prey into the inner chamber. Though the power of electricity, you can deal with the mice or rats that plague your space. This machine uses a powerful jolt of over 8,000 volts of electrical energy to safely euthanize pests. There will be no blood or gore, and certainly no mess for you to clean up. It is an earth friendly way to handle an age-long problem. Better still is that fact that it doesn’t use messy traps and other poisons, which are dangerous to pets and children. Who wants toxins in their home anyway? If you are concerned about the environment, this is one zapper to check out.
Rats compensate for their poor vision by having excellent memories.  Once a rat locates a safe way to get to where it wants to go it will travel that path over and over again.  This is why rats are great at running mazes in lab experiments.

To keep rodents away from your home, eliminate food sources by keeping counter surfaces, floors, and cabinets clean, and store dry food and “pet” food in chew-proof containers. Seal trash cans (use bungee cords on lids) and never feed companion animals outside.
Melted, it has the consistency of latex paint, and solidifies quickly as it is poured on the cardboard squares I chose to use. It doesn’t lose it’s “stickiness”, and is way more economical than buying individual traps. However, I’m not going to pay $90+ per gallon. Hope this helps.
A: Place the trap along the wall where rodents primarily travel or where you have seen signs of rodent activity. Rats are wary critters and they’ll initially avoid anything new in their environment. Good news is we’re smarter than they are! It may take a few days or nights for the first rat to enter your trap, but be patient!

This is a great trap if you don’t want to deal with a messy situation each time a mouse is caught in your trap. Simply deploy it along a rat path, and once a mouse is glued to the board, pick the board and dispose it.
The rat, enticed into the box by a yummy treat at the entrance and smeared on the back wall , steps on a metal plate.  This triggers an electric shock which – as long as the batteries are full or nearly full – kills within a couple of seconds.
Although silent and effective, these traps need to be emptied regularly or other rats will become “trap wary” and either avoid the area completely, urinate on them as a marker, or tip them over to render the trap ineffective.
Simple and east to deploy, this trap is made of durable steel and polystyrene material, allowing you to use it multiple times and for years (and you may need to, so do NOT throw it away). Dubbed as one of the best mice traps in the world, the Snap-E will get the job done guaranteed. Your current issue with household pests will be over pretty soon. There is no more worry about these little buggers ruining your things at home or bothering you and your family.
I love these new rat zappers they are so easy to use.Snap traps I could never set. These you just put batteries in a cracker with peanut butter and push the on button and zap you have a mouse in no time.Recommended to many friends who live in country.
A: To bait the Rat Zapper®, first make sure the trap is turned off. Place the bait along or on the back wall of the trap. Be sure to use gloves or a tool to bait so your scent is not transferred onto the trap. We’ve carefully researched dry pet food and found it an excellent lure. Other dried baits (nuts, dehydrated fruit, etc.) can also work well. Goopy Bait Note: Please don’t place moist or goopy bait in your Rat Zapper® unless you place it in a plastic container, like a medium plastic bottle cap, and then slide it to the back of your Rat Zapper®. (Otherwise you may goop the electronics and/or falsely trip the system.)
The only long-term way to control rodent populations is to make the area unattractive or inaccessible to them. Eliminate their food sources by keeping counter surfaces, floors, and cabinets clean, and store dry food and pet food in chew-proof containers. Seal trash cans (use bungee cords on lids), never feed companion animals outside, pick up fallen fruit and vegetables in orchards and gardens if possible, and never feed wildlife. Reduce hiding places by keeping grass and vegetation trimmed back and outdoor furniture, grills and barbecues, and wood piles away from buildings.
Place rat traps in high-activity areas of the rat colony. These areas may include darkened corners, along walls, behind appliances and objects, and all areas where droppings are evident. Since rats need to touch surfaces as they move, place them accordingly.
A: Electronic rat traps are the quickest and easiest way to catch rats. They are easy to use, with no setting or glue required. Their no-touch technology, plus 100% kill rate makes them an ideal way to control your rat problem. If you would like more information on how to catch a rat, view our complete guide below.
Are your dogs upset? Do you see small tracks and tail trails in dusty areas? Do you see areas where wood has been gnawed? Do you see smears along baseboards and other areas? Is there a heavy musky odor in the house? Can you see rodent droppings?

Live traps, on the other hand, always mean you’ll have to deal with a living rat. Many locales have passed laws that ban releasing a living rat, and if that’sthe case, you’ll have to kill it first before disposal. If that’s an uncomfortable proposition, skip this option
To trap Roof Rats, set traps on tree limbs, under vegetation on a backyard fence or trellis, or on other aboveground locations roof rats are known to frequent. Fasten the traps with wire to overhead pipes, rafters and beams.

Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights? Read more.
Use your free hand to place the metal pin over the U-shaped bar. Lift the yellow trigger on the trap and insert the metal pin into the “S” side (for sensitive traps) or the “F” side (for firm). Experiment with different trigger settings; the “S” trigger setting will snap easier than the “F” trigger setting.

Nooski Revolutionary Ring Rat Trap –  If there was ever a rat trap that created instant disgust, it would be the Nooski Ring Rat Trap.  The Nooski Ring Rat Trap is actually an ingenious product developed in New Zealand that is very effective.  All that has to happen is for the rat (out of curiosity) to stick its head inside the Nooski trap, and it is almost instantly killed.  I said “almost instantly.”
You’ll find a lot of conflicting advice about this.  I’ve found four things that seem to work  well : peanut butter, cheese, bacon bits and mashed up cat food.  You don’t need a lot of it – on this trap a smear will work well.

The problem could also manifest in your garage or backyard, in which case it would be helpful to make your property less inviting. This is possible if you tightly seal away garbage, rake leaves away from structures and keep all kindling and firewood stored at least one foot above ground.
These traps came recommended for me by a buddy to handle a chipmunk problem I have. Granted the box says they are for rats, he had success with them for his chipmunk issues, so I figured I’d give it a go. I bought two, we put them out by the side of my deck where they run by, and baited them with peanut butter and waited. The next morning I went out to see if I caught any of the little buggers, and to my surprise both traps were missing! My instant reaction was to blame my nosy neighbors, as they are always a bother. I went inside and put my shoes on to further investigate/search for the missing traps.
Rats infest homes and cause destruction to the areas of the house they live in. Ridding your home of rats requires patience and a plan. The plan usually involves an expensive mousetrap that you may not be able to afford, or involves a messy mousetrap that causes a horrifying scene at cleanup. Homemade mousetraps can cut down on costs, while leaving the gory scenes to a minimum.
Rats have been the bane of human civilization since recorded history. In fact, disease carrying rats have killed more humans than anything else, so when rats invade your living space, they need to be taken care of as quickly as possible.

PETA often fields calls from people who have discovered small “nontarget” animals hopelessly trapped on these sticky boards. One distraught woman found a glue trap with a bird, two frogs, and a salamander stuck to its surface. All the animals were still alive when she found them but died later, despite her efforts to free them.
Eliminate your mouse problem with electric mouse traps from Victor®. Electronic mouse traps deliver a high-voltage shock to kill mice humanely and effectively. Electronic mouse traps can catch up to 10 mice per setting. With Victor® electric mouse traps, pest elimination is always efficient so you can get your mouse infestation under control in no time.
Awesome idea, Just made mine and putting in some of my dog biscuits (something is going for it) and I’m not having any luck with mouse traps. So i thought your idea might be the one to track down the little tacker that is sneaking about in the night. I attached my trap.. Thanks again.
TOMCAT Glue Boards are manufactured with low-profile plastic trays, designed to reduce the chance of rodents stopping at the edge of the tray. The trap’s narrow lip also keeps rodents from skirting along the edges of the tray and avoiding the glue. Once rodents step onto the glue tray, TOMCAT’s tenacious glue will hold a rat securely, while just the slightest contact with the glue will hold a mouse.
The answer?  Put a trap (any trap, not just an electric one) close to a wall or boundary fence where you know or suspect the rodents are running. Make sure the opening of the trap is closest to the wall.
Both of these traps allow for disposal without touching the rat. The SecureKill Rat Trap has a grab tab for easy disposal. For easy clean up, dispose of the trap and the rodent together. If you would prefer to reuse the trap, pinch the trap open and drop the dead rodent in the trash.
TOMCAT Glue Boards capture rats and mice without poison, making them ideal to use in food plants, kitchens, restaurants, food processing plants, hospitals, residences, zoos and other sensitive areas where poison is prohibited or discouraged.
Obtain a long cardboard tube with one end closed. The tube might be from a paper towel roll or poster. It should be at least 12 inches long, 2-5 inches in diameter at its mouth, and have one end stopped with tape or with a cap. Place something soft in the closed end such as cotton balls or a wad of soft fabric.
If live trapping is the preference you end up trying to do the “responsible” thing, beware of local laws and regulations.  In many areas, relocation of wild animals is prohibited.  Relocating to different counties can also be against the law.  Be sure to check with your local animal control official before relocating any live rat.  In some cases, they may even offer to come out and pick it up.
The Victor Electronic Rat Trap is the ultimate in rodent control. It works by delivering a humane, high-voltage shock to effectively kill the invading rat. This powerful device is capable of killing up to 50 rats per set of fully charged batteries (4 C), making it a great value when you’re dealing with a sizable infestation. It’s also easy to use. Get started by simply applying a high protein bait in the provided bait cup, place the trap in a location with high rodent activity and turn it on. The trap is equipped with advanced smart circuit technology, which senses when a rat enters the tunnel, triggering the system to deliver a humane, high-voltage shock once the rat steps on the electrified plate. Since rats have the ability to restart their hearts after an electrical shock, this trap applies shock for 2 minutes to ensure higher kill rates. After making a catch, a green LED light blinks to indicate a kill. For your convenience, the trap’s design allows you to easily dispose of the dead rodent without having to see or touch it. The new and improved design of the electronic trap has a removable kill chamber, which provides better plate access so you can easily clean and bait it in between uses. These traps require no poison or chemicals and can be used anywhere inside your home or business to ensure years of effective rat control.

Using rat attractants or lures in small amounts attract rats, but in large amounts they repel rats. Most rat attractants are synthetic versions of “rat breath odor” that rats use to signal the safety of a food supply. Using too much of the rat attractant—or using commercial rat bait that has been allowed to dry out—will chase rats away from traps. You can learn more about rat poisons by reading this article The Top 3 Rat and Mouse Poison Baits.

JT Eaton 410BULK Jawz Plastic Rat Trap – excellent snap trap made of durable plastic. The trap is really easy to set compared to wooden traps and can be set by foot or hand. When JT Eaton is properly set the red label indicates it is ready to go.

All it takes to eliminate rats, mice and other rodents are plugging in this black trap and waiting for it to do the dirty work. Made from strong plastic and measuring 4.21 x 5.31 x 11.1 inches, this item will allure the rats and then kill them instantly.
Q.I recently purchased a victor electronic rat trap Model M241 it worked great for about one month or 30 rats but it’s now showing the LED green light and The LED red light at the same time and its not working. I will like to know if there is something I can do or what do the lights mean?
It might be best not to completely rely on these devices for pest control. Your best bet is to call your local Orkin Branch Office and have an Orkin Pest Specialist come to your home and provide you with a thorough rodent inspection. Your Orkin Pest Specialist will develop a customized, scientifically proven, treatment protocol that best fits your needs.
__The ‘Professional’ style trap rarely works. I have watched rodents OH-SO cautiously not touch the yellow pad and ever so lightly nibble on the bait. Only once did it work. Two mouses/meeses were at the trap and were wrestling for the food where the trigger was accidentally sprung. But, it caught 2 mouse’s in my house’s.
Hopefully you can use the information below to select the best mouse trap bait for the mice currently invading your home. You will also learn some tricks to use the bait effectively when you come across those few little guys that like to steal your bait without setting off the trap.
Update: reduced my rating from ***** (5) to ** (2) as the trap broke after the first use (kill). The plastic latch mechanism cracked, presumably when it caught the first rodent, and will no longer set. It was literally set 1x and used 1x (correctly per instructions) and broke.
Professional services can cost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. These methods are all very cost friendly. From the budget busters to the more high-tech electric models, all of them are affordable.

3) Are you a conservationist? If the answer is yes, and you believe that harming mice isn’t morally justifiable, then Snap Traps, Glue Traps and Baiting Stations aren’t what you want. A Multiple Catch trap is more likely what you are looking for when it comes to catching these animals. These sort of devices are great and effective for catching small rodents in your home, so if you are looking for a humane way to get rid of the animals then this is what you’re looking for.
Victor “Professional” Rat Trip has adjustable setting for firm or sensitive trigger. If you have it set to the firm or F setting it may not trigger try setting it all the way to the S setting(be careful trap might accidental trigger!).
Our friend has told us about his trying to catch rats with the help of an ordinary snap trap. Once he saw how two rats were stealing the bait from the trap. One rat raised the trap’s cross-bar with the help of its teeth and returned it back after its rat-friend pulled out the bait. Rats are so cunning and adaptable that it is very hard to get rid of them. By their ability to survive, they can be compared only with cockroaches. That is why electronic traps, which kill rats by electric shock immediately, have become the best solution for many people.
However if this is not an option or you feel the need to permantley dispose of the rodent, I would recommend a simple bucket of water. Put the bottle in and put a brick over it to submerge the trap. Walk away. Come back when all the drama is over and dispose of the entire bottle.
Unlike a mouse problem, rats can chew through concrete to get into your home. These traps and systems can capture even the largest rat with ease. Sewer rats can become quite large, up to 10 inches in length and 2 pounds. Not just any trap or system will catch these large vermin; you need something grand.
Make sure that the plates are clear of any debris, especially urine or hair from a recent kill that may interfere with the unit’s proper function. Remember, both plates need to be clean so that the electric circuit is made complete by the rodent stepping on both.
Exclusion is an important rodent control technique. It will get rid of the rats by making it difficult for them to enter the home or structure. Rats are easier to exclude than mice because rats a typically larger. Mice can enter an opening as small as 3/8″ wide. All openings greater that 1/4″ should be sealed to exclude mice. For rats, all openings greater that 1/2″ should be sealed.
A great option for someone who has accepted that they will be battling with mice for a while (in some areas they will never completely go away – especially in large cities) and does not want to keep buying mouse traps. Also a great option for you if you do not want to deal with a bloody mess left from a typical snap trap.
Pros: Low maintenance — not necessary to check for dead rats, as the rats will leave the trap and die elsewhere. Can be left out semi-permanently if poison is consistently refilled. These traits make poison traps good choices for outdoor rat control.

If you don’t get a good look at the rodent, you may have problems identifying it or them. This is where a “rodent camera trap” can be very useful. A camera trap will capture your rats on video. They are easy to use and relatively inexpensive. Click the link above to read more about them.
Consider moving the mouse traps to another location where you have mouse activity. If setting up your mouse traps directly next to the high traffic areas is not working, try setting up the traps adjacent to or just a bit away from these high traffic areas.

Dog poop is not at the top of the list of preferred foods for rats. It may eat it if there is no other food available, but I agree it will have a tendency to encourage them in contrast to repelling them. In addition, dog poop is not very hygenic to have about the place. Have you tried contacting your local authority to see if they have any policies in place relating to this issue?
The rat, enticed into the box by a yummy treat at the entrance and smeared on the back wall , steps on a metal plate.  This triggers an electric shock which – as long as the batteries are full or nearly full – kills within a couple of seconds.
Live Catch Rat Trap Tips:  Use a piece of old carpet and place under the trap to collect urine and droppings.  Use this piece of carpet on future trapping missions to attract other rats and animals.  Be sure to wear gloves. Old carpet can be kept in a trash bag.
Change of plans. This bucket trap may work for mice but not for this nemesis! As Roy Scheider, star of Jaws, said when he laid eyes on the shark, “Your going to need a bigger boat.” When dealing with Ratzilla and his kin, you’re going to need a bigger bucket!
If a rat smells a food on another rat’s breath, it will eat that food. Actually, rats need to smell a combination of carbon disulphide (or “rat breath”) and a food odor to feel comfortable eating a new food. Once one rat takes a bait, others will compete for it. The best way to make sure this happens is to put out a bait food on traps you have not set for several days before you set the traps.
Before you can pick the best trap for the situation, it’s crucial to determine whether you’re dealing with a rat or mouse. For starters, the paw prints of a brown rat are typically around 20mm in width, whereas mice paw prints are generally under 10mm wide. Likewise, rat droppings are about the size of pumpkin seeds, and mice droppings are more the size of sunflower kernels. Additionally, mice tend to nest inside homes around the clock, whereas rats are often active indoors and out.
The very first patented (and lethal) trap took the form of a set of spring-loaded, cast-iron jaws called the Royal No. 1, which was patented by James M. Keep of New York in 1879. The classic spring-loaded snap trap, with which people are most familiar, was first patented in 1894 by William C. Hooker of Abingdon, Illinois. A British inventor named James Henry Atkinson patented a very similar device in 1898, which he dubbed the Little Nipper.
To avoid stolen bait, the bait cup is designed so that it can’t be reached without activating the extremely responsive trigger, this means that even the craftiest of rats can’t avoid springing the jaws!
These animals host a variety of parasites and diseases easily communicable to humans. These are the creatures that started the Black Plague in the Middle Ages, by harboring fleas that carried the bubonic plague bacteria, among other types like typhus, trichinosis, pneumonia and others. They are also very intelligent creatures, able to perceive the dangers of a trap if rats have been trapped and killed beforehand.

Once you know your rat, whether you are trapping a brown rat (Norway rat) or a black rat, then you can choose the right bait. Black rats are vegetarians. Brown rats eat both plant foods and meat. If you have more than one kind of rat to catch, it is best to use a plant food such as peanut butter as bait.
Glue traps can lead to intense pain and discomfort if a pet or child accidentally steps on one. In rare cases, the glue trap can be life-threatening if it attaches to the area around the mouth and nose. To remove a glue trap, apply baby oil to the spot where it is stuck and pry it off with a spoon.[6]

Do not use a trash can which is too wide. If you do, it’s possible the tube will come to rest on an angle, rather than straight up and down. If that happens, the mouse will be able to climb out of the tube easily.

If you must place a trap parallel to a wall, place it toe-to-toe with another trap facing the opposite direction. This will make it easier to catch a rat coming from either direction. Otherwise, keep your traps spaced at least 15 feet apart from one another.

You may also need to select a trap that has a highly sensitive sensor to detect when the mouse is present. You may have baby mice that don’t weight enough to trigger the trap’s snapping mechanism.  Electric mousetraps are more sensitive than some of the snap traps.  The Raticator Plus Rodent Trap is known to have a very sensitive sensing circuit while being an affordable type of electronic trap.
It’s just as important to check live traps as it is to check lethal traps. Leaving a rat in a live trap for a long period of time can be potentially deadly, especially in very hot or cold climates where the rat is vulnerable to exposure.
Live rat trapping is difficult but can be accomplished.  The problem with live trapping is that unlike snap traps, the rat has to enter the trap and walk across the “trip” plate to get to the lure.  Some rats will wander into the trap without any thought and get trapped.  Other rats are smart and will not enter the trap at all. These rats are said to be “trap shy”.
Glue board rat traps can be effective in situations where snap traps or live traps won’t work.  That’s because there is usually no lure involved.  The glue board is placed against a wall where the rat – while running – runs directly into it and gets caught.

Tons of companies, including  CVS, Dollar Tree, Rite Aid, and Walgreens,  have stopped selling glue traps, and many other businesses have stopped using glue traps after hearing from concerned customers. Unfortunately, some companies still sell these inhumane devices. Whenever you see glue traps for sale, send a polite letter to the store manager. Ask him or her to stop selling the traps and point out the many companies nationwide that have already sworn off glue traps.
For instance, one of the most common ways for black rats to access roofs is by climbing trees and crawling across overhanging branches. If you have this problem, trim your branches back and don’t allow any tree or bush extensions to be within three feet of your walls or roof. Employ baited snap traps along the fences, trellises and tree branches of your property to further prevent these rodents from getting into your property. Use wire to secure traps to branches, rafters and roof pipes, if need be.
Mouse traps can be a little bit expensive, especially if you have a serious mouse problem. Fortunately, it’s easy to make cheap, effective mousetraps with everyday items. The crafty homeowner can turn cardboard rolls, plastic bottles, and coffee cans into homemade mousetraps.
There’s no shortage of traps, repellents, and poisons available, but if you don’t want to kill or hurt the mouse, your options are pretty limited. Sometimes, you just have to get creative, but hopefully with better luck than this guy.
There is a better way, and it wouldn’t be wrong if you learn how to identify pest like this and some strategies on how to handle them. You’ve heard of DIY rattraps? But buy the wrong type and it can go horribly wrong. The following article will turn you from novice to pro when choosing a rat trap to help with your mouse problems
If you reach a level of desperation like I did, I can tell you that this is worth the money and having faith. I thought it was buggy and was planning to return, esp. with mixed reviews and no luck the first night… then, well, look at the photo!!! 😀
Don’t want to keep resetting the trap? Try skewering a plastic bottle and positioning it over a bucket so it spins when the mouse runs out to get the peanut butter like in the video below (skip to 1:25 to see it in action).
This handy contraception is black in color and measures 11 x 4.5 x 5 inches. It is powered by 4 D batteries that operate the sensors that activate the 7000V shock. It is energy efficient and will kill as many as 30 rats before the alkaline batteries need to be replaced. Unlike other traps that leave a bloody mess or odor, this one makes clean and mess-free kills.
Glue boards might seem like a safe and easy solution to pest problems but in fact, they are one of the cruelest and most dangerous. Responsible for more suffering than virtually any other wildlife control product on the market, they are readily available at grocery stores, home improvement and hardware stores and most major retailers, as well as over the Internet.
Eliminator Robust can be powered by either 4 D batteries or via a Plug-in power adapter. Besides rats and mice, this portable equipment (1.9 pounds0 also works on chipmunks, squirrels and other rodents.
Do Bird Feeders Attract Mice: Having bird feeders offers many hours of enjoyment, bringing birds up close to your home, but you may be inadvertently inviting rodents as well. Learn how to enjoy your bird feeders and keep pests away with proper rodent prevention.
Each of these traps is set similarly. For the TOMCAT SecureKill Rat Trap, place peanut butter or TOMCAT Attractant Gel into the bait well prior to setting the trap. Pull the set bar back until you hear a click to let you know that the trap is set.
Zap any rat that tries to entice your home by using the RZC001 Classic rat trap. Made from quality plastic and featuring an effective design, this unit is suitable for the home and can be placed indoors or outdoors. It has a decent size of 12 x 4 x .5 inches that makes it suitable for most rats.
Mice are highly intelligent. They may react differently to different types of mouse trap bait. According to the experts at Victor Pest Control (a premier multinational pest-control service), it’s important that you use the best bait for your particular mouse trap situation. You should try different bait solutions until you find the best mouse trap bait for your particular “infestation”.
A lot of people are suspicious of whether home rat traps will really work or not. Anyway, the reality of the situation is that if you make them correctly. Also put them in the right areas of your home where there is high population of rodents. It is sometimes unclear why originally built rodent traps may not work to rid you of rats while homemade ones will work successfully, but it happens.
If rats aren’t searching for food or nest building materials, then they are probably in their nest, which would be in a quiet space anywhere in your home, garden or sewer. Rats are most active at sunrise and sunset. They will also avoid humans so tend to come out when you are not around. The reason why rats eat your shoes could be because they are made of leather. However, rats will eat anything. They have a very efficient digestive system.
Consider moving the mouse traps to another location where you have mouse activity. If setting up your mouse traps directly next to the high traffic areas is not working, try setting up the traps adjacent to or just a bit away from these high traffic areas.
I set this glue trap for this mouse cause it was destroying my stuff every night. It was successfull but was bad as it when the mouse gets stuck to the trap it cant escape and it dies from hunger, and weakness from trying continuously from freeing itself and it dies after 4-5 days of struggle. This stuff is inhumane I felt so bad for the poor little thing that i freed it, which was the hardest thing to do, and left in and open field.

Rats. It’s a chilling thought. Could a home as nice as yours have rats in it? You don’t always see them, but they leave clear signs. You might start noticing droppings in the pantry, grease marks on the baseboards, or chew marks in food packaging. First of all, don’t feel overwhelmed. Tomcat can help you deal with the problem.
Snap traps are the most practical option due to their low cost which lets you affordably place and set many traps at once.  However, snap traps are a little hard to use and some folks prefer other options.
The Snap E Rat Trap comes in packs of 6 allowing you to distribute the traps around the house to catch the problem rodents quickly. The quick response time that these traps use means there is no escape for the rodent once it’s been caught. There is a vertical bar that like the traditional wooden traps have except these traps have half the distance to travel so the response is quicker therefore leaving the mouse with next to no time to retrieve the bait. There is also an extra-large paddle and strike bar that catches the rodents from the front the sides and the back, leaving the rodent no way to escape. The Big Snap E does not allow any stains or odors like the old fashioned wooden traps; they can be reused for years so you get maximum usage for your money. The simple and sanitary traps are safe for both the user and the animal trapped inside.
But it doesnt end there. They are all over my yard as well and destroying my garden. I didn’t want to resort to something as extreme and cruel as this, but I spend months and months on my vegetable gardens and the only one’s benefitting and eating the delicious veggies are these little f&^rs.
If you don’t want to kill rodents in your house, then it’s a great choice for you. This is the best live rat trap which you can find. Its clever design allows you to catch even light weight animals like a small mouse.

Insert skewers into the bottle. Take two five-inch wooden skewers of the kind used to grill shish kebab or construct various arts and crafts projects. They should be only a millimeter or so in diameter. Press the two skewers through the bottle from one set of points to the other using the marks you made.
Are your dogs upset? Do you see small tracks and tail trails in dusty areas? Do you see areas where wood has been gnawed? Do you see smears along baseboards and other areas? Is there a heavy musky odor in the house? Can you see rodent droppings?
