It’s only when the mouse is killed instantly that the trap could be considered humane, as the animal dies quickly without experiencing panic. That’s why it’s important to set traps correctly. Carefully follow the instructions that come with the traps. In addition, below are a few tips to help ensure the trap works as intended.
Actually, these rodents will eat just about anything. We were fortunate that we only lost a pack of cheap noodles and was left with only one extra opening in his pack. If left to their own survival instincts – they gotta eat – rats can destroy non-hardened food storage items and spread disease.
I don’t know about them being mean, but the real problem is that they are very smart, which is a problem when trying to get rid of them. Like you, I would be happy if I never saw another one, but I prefer humane means to kill them if possible. Years ago I was out in the barn and heard a tiny, high pitched scream. I went to where I had snap traps set and there was a baby rat that had its back broken by the trap; it was screaming in agony. I had to kill it with a hammer. I never want to repeat that!
We found a simple bucket with some water in it, 500ml coke bottle, wire through the bottle connected to each side of the bucket, peanut butter smeared about on the coke bottle. The rats/mice come to eat the peanut butter and roll off the bottle into the bucket of water. Caught 9 mice within the hour..
Call me right away if you have an animal problem.  I can do an inspection for you, remove the problem animal from your property, and make some recommendations for how to prevent future problems by proper containment of food sources and elimination of access points.  I know rats inside and out; they are such a common problem and can ruin your home or business property and your health.  It is important to act quickly.  Your local animal control does not provide these kinds of services.
After reading many interesting comments, thought I should share my experience. I have used two bigger ultrasonic pest repellent units (Black & Decker EP1100-A) for last ten plus years for rodents and similar larger pests – One in backyard and one in garage; and didn’t have a single rodent or similar pest anywhere near the house. I don’t have anything to prove the cause and effect relationship, but we do think it works, at least for larger pests. We also have a few smaller pluggable units inside house and never had a single cockroach in the house.
Glue board rat traps can be effective in situations where snap traps or live traps won’t work.  That’s because there is usually no lure involved.  The glue board is placed against a wall where the rat – while running – runs directly into it and gets caught.
I am the best mouser in our house (and we have three cats!) Like you, I found that rodents can eat peanut butter or cheese right off a trap without springing it. So I took to cooking a piece of turkey bacon until it was just shy of crispy, then I threaded a needle and “sewed” it onto the trap. Then I put the trap between the cabinet and stove so that the mice could only approach it from the striking side (and if the cats stuck their paws in there, the trap would spring away from them).
Be sure to thoroughly clean the snap traps between uses. Rats will smell “death” on a trap that’s recently killed another rat. I have the black plastic snap traps. After removing the dead rat (triple wrapped in plastic and put in the deep freeze until garbage day), I drop the trap into a bucket with about a litre of very hot water and some bleach; soak for a few hours, scrub with a brush and then, if you want, rewash it (I actually put mine in the dishwasher, after a thorough bleaching and scrubbing). It should just smell like clean plastic when it comes out of the dishwasher. Re-bait it, put it where the rats are active, let it do its thing, and repeat! 🙂 I am sorry that I have to kill these buggers, but if they’re in my house, they need to be killed. My house is 108 years old and has all kinds of secret places for rodents to come and go, but this year (2016), here on Vancouver Island, there is a huge rat problem so I’ve become very cutthroat about killing them.
The best bait for a rat trap could all depend on the species of rat you’re trying to catch. Different species eat different types of food. For instance, black rats are herbivorous creatures, but brown rats are omnivorous by nature.

Garbage, one time use, piece of junk. Victor used to make great products, but this plastic lever is junk. Don’t waste your money on this one time use trap. Victor should go back to the metal lever instead of scamming people.

If you suspect your problem is down to a single rat, you’ll likely be able to solve the problem with one or two strategically placed traps. If, however, there’s an infestation on your property, you’ll probably need to place a dozen or so traps all around your house.
Similar to other top products, it relies on advanced sensor technology and high voltage to electrocute the rat and leaves no mess. The unit is powered by 4 D batteries that can eliminate as many as 30 rats. For easy placing and checking, the trap comes with a plugin indicator light.
If you encounter an animal who is stuck to a glue trap, pour a small amount of cooking oil or baby oil onto the stuck areas (avoiding the animal’s nose and mouth) and gently work the animal free. If you cannot free the animal, quickly rush him or her to a veterinarian or wildlife rehabilitator. Sometimes euthanasia performed by a veterinarian is the most humane way to end the trapped animal’s suffering.
I set this glue trap for this mouse cause it was destroying my stuff every night. It was successfull but was bad as it when the mouse gets stuck to the trap it cant escape and it dies from hunger, and weakness from trying continuously from freeing itself and it dies after 4-5 days of struggle. This stuff is inhumane I felt so bad for the poor little thing that i freed it, which was the hardest thing to do, and left in and open field.
I know this is an old post, but you actually want the stairway to heaven in line with the wire. The vermin will attempt to high wire in an effort to get to the bait. If it doesn’t make it to the can, it loses its balance and will try to gain foot on the can. Then it’s bye bye Ratzilla!

A: Place the trap inside a small cardboard box that has enough height to allow the trap to snap. Cut a 3″ x 3 opening on two opposite sides of the box. Place the box with a baited trap in a known rodent path.
The best bait for your trap may depend on the species of your rats. In North America, two species are most prevalent: the Norway rat and the roof rat. The Norway rat is usually found at or below ground level in burrows, basements, sewers and dumpsters. The roof rat is usually found higher up – in trees, cliffs, attics and higher levels of a home or warehouse.
Plan ahead to eradicate a large group of rats in one night. To do so, select a bait area, such as a pile of grains, bark or other natural areas where rats congregate. Then bait a large number of traps with peanut butter, and leave them unset on in the area.

This type of trap is made using a special adhesive applied to the board, cardboard or plastic tray. Glue is applied to the center of the trap: it often has a flavor pleasant to the rats. It’s not recommended to put traps outside because of natural conditions (humidity, dust), which quickly bring glue into disrepair. Catching rats on such sticky tape is very convenient.
When people look to methods to get rid of rodents, they often turn to an extermination company. These methods provide a safe disposal system that means you don’t have to touch the rat. In some systems, you don’t even have to see it. The chances of them getting away are nearly none with these revamped styles.
It produces no mess. There will be no blood, just a dead rodent. For cleaning it, you don’t even have to touch it. Just pick the device, and slide the dead animal into the trash can, and set the trap for the next killing. This device kills more than 90% animals which enter it.

Set several traps per room. There are usually many more mice than you actually see. Rodents like to use the same paths over and over again. They also tend to stay close to walls where they feel more protected. Put the trap down at a right angle to the wall along the path they normally take, with the bait side up against the wall and directly in their path.
Of course reviews differ because rats infestations differ too, but this unit have been tested by customers for many years and it has the trust of both of them. So, you may make conclusions yourself about is it worth to purchase this trap for ~$30?

This trap isn’t waterproof so you have to purchase an extra water resistant cover to use the trap outdoors. You also can take a useful tip from one clever man: “I cut the top off the cardboard box the zapper was shipped in, cut a viewing hole in the top over the location of the light on the zapper, and used plastic wrap to complete the ‘window”. Most of the scientists believe that, there are only two effective ways to get rid of them from your house; rat traps & poison baits. But, a lot of people say that, mouse repellents really work. You can read this article about ultrasonic rat repellers.

Rats are smart and they are inherently cautious.  Kill as many as you can at once before they get wise to your plans.  If the rats figure out how to avoid the traps then you will need to switch to poisons.
You’ve seen it lurking in your basement: a fat rat. Now you’re struggling to fall asleep at night, worrying about the rodent that’s taken up residence in your home. It’s time to set some rat traps. But what, exactly, should you bait your traps with? Fortunately, there are several types of food that will attract your rat. In this case, it’s good news that rats aren’t exactly picky eaters.
But why peanut butter? Do rats like peanut butter? In fact, they absolutely do. There is little information regarding exactly why rats and peanut butter go together so well – or how anyone found out that they did. Regardless of why and how, it has been tested and proven that one of the best and most trusted ways to bait a rat is by spreading the yummy, sticky substance that is peanut butter right onto a trap. Once you get it all set, the rats will be sure to come running.
Rat traps are designed to capture rats. As rats are suspicious of new objects and they know if they have seen a rat trapped inside a trap with one entrance, for example, they will be wary and may avoid them. Spring traps are powerful enough to break an animal’s neck or spine and can even break a human finger. Rat traps are much firmer than a regular mousetrap and may actually not be as sensitive to a mouse as it would to the larger rat. There are a few different types of rat traps that can be used. Glue traps are non-poisonous sticky glue that is usually spread over card board, which sticks the rat into place. A non-lethal trap is a funnel shaped wire cage, the rats can move themselves into the tube through the narrow opening but cannot escape due to the wires poking at them.
This glue can be used on paper for collages of all sorts. This can be made with gluten-free flour blends as well as regular flour. Apply this glue using a paintbrush. This glue will store for several months if kept sealed in a jar, and stored in a cool dark location when not in use.
Unless you are willing to deal with a hostile rat, live trapping is not recommended.  Releasing an angry rodent may sound easy, but there can be many issues to consider.  Rats can escape and get away from traps easier than you think.  Urine and dropping issues are also something to consider.  Food, water and heat are also necessary to keep them alive.
