Do not use poison. Poison can cause rodents to die in your walls or attic, leading to unpleasant and hard-to-remove aromas. They are also dangerous to pets and children. Considering the relative effectiveness and safety of traps, you do not need to use poison to rid your home of rodents.

The chipmunk trap is just like yours, in that you have an access (board or thick stick) and a bucket. In this case it should be half full of water, and you use birdseed-grade sunflower seeds. I would take about a half cup, sprinkle it on top of the water, bait a few on the stick, and go to work. In the evening, check the bucket and usually there was a drowned (or drowning – not for the squeamish spouses) chipmunk in the bucket. My record was 6 in one day. Whether they were jumping in to eat the seeds, or thirsty and going after the water, I don’t care as long as it worked.
Put mousetraps (or live traps, if you don’t want to harm them) anywhere you see any rats or signs of rats, including gnaw marks and droppings. Rats can enter your home through openings much smaller than themselves, so find and plug any holes you see that may lead to the outside. If you have a crawlspace, go under the house and look for holes there as well.
I Suspected a rat in my garage, put one of these out with peanut butter on it. Within 30 minutes it Caught a rat. The trap has a strong snap! It flung peanut butter on the garage door that was 4 feet from where I placed the trap!
I tested one by setting it up and triggering it with a stick. It broke after triggering 2 times. The 2nd one broke while I was pulling back the kill bar to set it up. The 3rd one almost broke while pulling back the kill bar, but I stopped pulling on it to avoid breaking it. It seems like the loop of the kill bar on the right would come off the horizontal bar easily, causing the spring to become dislodged. See the attached photos.
Change of plans. This bucket trap may work for mice but not for this nemesis! As Roy Scheider, star of Jaws, said when he laid eyes on the shark, “Your going to need a bigger boat.” When dealing with Ratzilla and his kin, you’re going to need a bigger bucket!
Ammonia-soaked cotton balls or rags will drive mice and rats out (they hate the smell). Place them in areas where the animals, their droppings, or nests have been seen, and be sure to give them a few days to leave.

Bait the trap with a high-protein substance, such as peanut butter, chocolate or hazelnut spread. Place the bait on the metal bait pedal using a Q-Tip, toothpick or another tool to mask your human scent.

This DIY mouse trap gets an A+ for simplicity and although I haven’t used it yet, it’s obvious it would work and therefore gets the scratchy smelling sticker for operability. The concept is the mouse scurries under the glass to get the peanut butter while knocking the nickel loose causing the glass to fall onto the mouse.
This trap has both a firm and sensitive setting. It will be easier to set on the firm setting. Keep in mind that the pedal is pre-baited. Adding bait is optional, but could affect the sensitivity. additionally, we had placed Peppermint Oil (which we still use to keep them at bay) in all the areas that were absolutely off-limits to rats and that was immediately effective. they stayed clear of areas where we distributed the Oil and began moving only in distant areas of the property, where we had the traps (and bait boxes) …so 2 👍 to Peppermint Oil; Pure Body Naturals Undiluted Essential Peppermint Oil, 4 fl. oz. Rats present a large problem to agriculture; it is estimated that millions of dollars’ worth of food crops are lost annually to their incursions; rat populations are also on the rise in urban areas across the US fuelling fears of the spread of disease. Rat control has become a huge and lucrative industry and the use of rat traps is a major tool in the battle against the rodents.
They never saw it coming… they came wave upon wave into the mouth of the beast. Eager to reach their last meal they crawl inside, but they find only death. The bodies pile higher and higher. The beast shows no mercy and spares no rodent. Its appetite is unending… consuming rodents and batteries without remorse.
Place the arm bar over the kill bar and secure it under the plastic pedal. Take note of the Firm and Sensitive setting. The trap will be easier to set on the firm side, but not trip as easy. The trap will be more difficult to set on the sensitive side, but trip very easily.
Most of the sounds a rat makes are inaudible to human ears and without a specially modified bat detector we would be completely unaware of them. Most of a rats inaudible chatter seems to signify happiness and excitement. The more vocal sounds are generally aimed at reinforcing something they are communicating with their body. Rats only rely on audible communication for a very small part of their overall communication. It can still be useful to understand some of the more common noises.
If you’re using a round bottle rather than a bottle with roughly rectangular sides, it is more difficult to gauge where to place the marks. Try to place the marks about 90 degrees apart from each other around the circumference of the bottle, two on one side of the cut and two on the other.
I’ve just plugged one in each room in my house a couple of days ago, and so far it’s just increasing the activity of the mice. It’s not a quick fix and if you’re petrified of mice, like I am, these electronic devices don’t really help.
A: Try to use the least amount of bait possible in any style mouse trap used. The more bait you use, the easier it is for rodents to remove it without disturbing the traps. The goal is to have them apply extra force to the trigger pedal with their nose/tongue to remove the bait. To do this press a small amount of bait into the bait pedal.
As you know, rats live in groups and prefer to live next to people to find food and a safe home, especially in highly populated areas. Rats can eat your food, lead to severe injury, and transmit diseases. Let’s talk how you can make a rat trap.
What these actually do is cause rodents to panic so they shoot off in all directions. If your infestation is really new, the pests may decide to move elsewhere but otherwise, like any other noise, they will simply get used to it as part of their daily life. In my experience with mice and rats, the only sure thing to do is make sure ALL food is out of their reach and lay good, old-fashioned traps. If you don’t like kill-traps, remember to release your humane catches *at least* 3 miles from your home and preferably the other side of a busy road or river to make sure they don’t simply return.
Claiming it controlled cockroaches, my mother used to seed the underside of the house with ‘daddy long-legs’ from our previous house (we were military and moved a lot, often into less than desirable housing). Other than Alabama… she was right. I’ve tolerated a lot of spiderwebs over the years and only ever had cockroaches in apartments that were routinely sprayed. If these ultrasonics drive away spiders as some claim…watch out.

I haven’t used them yet but I bought 5 of them for 2 dollars n some change each off eBay ….so I spent 11 dollars n change all together for 5 of them…..I got a new apartment. .the neighbor has a infestation of roaches..so there where roaches..and spiders..omg.. I used insect fogger in each room …a boric acid ..and roach gel in the corners and crevasses…I haven’t moved in yet ..even though I’ve only seen 1 roach everytime I visit…so I just hope these ultrasonic things work..and keep everything out ..I have a 1 year old..we can’t live in there until every insect is out
Special Features: Low-profile plastic trays, designed to reduce the chance of rodents stopping at the edge of the tray, narrow lip also keeps rodents from skirting along the edges of the tray and avoiding the glue, can be used with Trapper Tunnels to protect against dust and debris
My neighbor bought me some cheapo made in China rat traps and they have yet to catch anything. You almost have to step on them to set them off. My grandparents had these traps and they were always the traps that caught rats. The trigger is very sensitive (best design I’ve seen) and the trap is made with quality parts and a solid piece of wood. If you are thinking about buy some traps these are the ones to buy. Even if you’re not looking for a dozen traps, it’s worth the extra money because you’ll get the rat(s) you’re looking for in no time.
THIS is an exceptional electronic execution chamber for rats! I reviewed all of the brands available and chose this one as my best prospect, and I was right. What surprised me though is the fact that very little of the trap’s advantages were advertised before I purchased it. For instance, the clever physical design of the chamber resists the rat’s auto-response once electricity begins to flow and prevents him from spontaneously “leaping away” from the deadly electric panels. Also, since having caught/killed several rats, I noticed that the bait is always consumed before the rat is electrocuted — I suspect that there is 5-or-so seconds delay before the electricity flows, giving the rat time settle down and become less alert while enjoying the bait… then, it’s all over for him with a 2-minute constant electrical surge that kills him and assures no quick spontaneous restart of his heart… on a small scale perhaps, but some real engineering! My compliments to Victor. (BTW, the green light is not very good, but who cares)
we had a mouse that was outsmarting us. We got this and found out it was a chipmunk! We have caught many mice and chipmunks with this. It has solved a problem that was getting to be very frustrating. We really didn’t want to have to kill them but it had to be done as too much damage was happening in the basement. It is quick so humane.
A: Individuals in a rodent population search for different types of food. For mice, anything high in protein like peanut butter, chocolate or hazelnut spread is a great option. Also, nesting materials like dental floss, cotton or string are also great options. Try to use whatever bait or nesting material the rodents are currently feeding on or using to build nests.
Third, attach jumper cables to the metal plate at the back of the cage. The clips on the cables should just barely fit onto the edge of the mesh cage. Set the trapdoor loading the spring as directed on the product label. Place the electric cage rat trap diy in a rodent-infested area.
On the end of the planks that hang over the buckets, smear a bit of peanut butter to attract rats. Attach longer boards on the other end of the boxes for the rats to crawl up. Rodents are nice climbers and can get to a food source in any place.
If you’re not sure which page you need, clicking on this picture will take you to an article which lists all the other pages on my site relating to getting rid of rats and mice from your chicken coop.
If you place the trigger bar on the right side of the bait pad towards the “S” then the trigger is set to “Sensitive”. This means that the trap is harder for you to set but easier for the rat to trigger.
Other non-lethal traps include the “bucket trap”, literally little more than a large plastic or metal bucket which has a piece of wood propped against it. Food bait is placed at the bottom of the bucket. Rats climb up the “ramp”, go for the food then find they cannot climb out of the trap. Again, these must be monitored carefully and the rats released outside promptly. This type of rat trap can be easily converted to a humane killing trap by filling the bucket about a third full with water. Most rats will drown within two minutes, although Norway rats are strong swimmers and it could take far longer for them to exhaust themselves and succumb.
Terrified rats and mice sometimes scream as they try to escape the glue. Glue traps rip patches of skin, fur, and feathers off the animals’ bodies as they struggle to get away, and many animals even chew off their own legs trying to free themselves.
This is one mouse trap I use when I want to catch several mice and I am not going to be around for a little while. Many times we would use this at my hunting cabin in the foothills of the Adirondacks when we would leave for the week and come back to a bucket full of mice.
Determine what types of rodents are in your home. Determine rodent type based on the rodent dropping you find. Mice droppings are a ¼ inch long with pointy ends, and rat droppings are ½-¾ inch with relatively rectangular or sausage like shapes. Squirrel droppings are roughly 3/8 inch with rounded edges, and can be recognized by the fact that they lighten in color over time.
Seal off wherever the rodents are entering your home. One of the most important and effective ways of controlling unwanted rodents is blocking off their entrance point. This will prevent more rodents from getting into your home.
I live on the 4th floor in single bed flat in london. I own a cat. About 14 days ago I watched a medium sized rat with a foot of tail walk across my living room floor at about 2am. The cat decided to ignore it, I think she sensed it was not worth the bother. It has been living in my kitchen sink unit . . . Last time, I poisoned a rat it was so traumatic for both of us I made a vow never to use it again. I decided to go for the trad larger spring mouse trap design . . It is supposed to break the neck instantly. . . the rat was too quick for it or it just nibbled the bait away.

These devices have worked for us for about 25 years– not the same ones because every few years I’ve bought new ones. We live in Florida and those awful palmetto bugs occasionally come in from the outside. When we get one, it doesn’t live long. I notice it first behaving strangely and a few days later find it dead. The devices have worked for us and with more safety and less expense than an extermination contract. I put them in my mother’s house which was overrun by mice. Everything the exterminator tried had failed. The devices has her mouse free in two weeks.
It may sound weird, but rats can’t bear the sight of the human hair. This can be an effective way to repel rats. Clip a few strands and throw them inside the holes of rats, or at the places they tend to visit the most. As the rats will eat the hair, they will die.
Place rubber bands around the skewers. Rubber bands about one centimeter in diameter are ideal. If you have trouble finding a band that small, try using some elastic hair ties. With the hinge on the upper side of the bottle, loop one band around the two skewers on the left side of the bottle and another band around the skewers on the right side of the bottle.
Most trapping efforts fail because too few mouse traps or rat traps are used. You’ll probably need more traps then you think. Set enough Victor traps to kill most of the population before the rodents begin to shy away from the traps. We recommend placing the traps every 2-3 feet along a wall, with the trap placed perpindicular to the wall. Rodents enter a home through holes the size of a dime and run along walls, not over open spaces.

Obtain a long cardboard tube with one end closed. The tube might be from a paper towel roll or poster. It should be at least 12 inches long, 2-5 inches in diameter at its mouth, and have one end stopped with tape or with a cap. Place something soft in the closed end such as cotton balls or a wad of soft fabric.
I am the best mouser in our house (and we have three cats!) Like you, I found that rodents can eat peanut butter or cheese right off a trap without springing it. So I took to cooking a piece of turkey bacon until it was just shy of crispy, then I threaded a needle and “sewed” it onto the trap. Then I put the trap between the cabinet and stove so that the mice could only approach it from the striking side (and if the cats stuck their paws in there, the trap would spring away from them).
I don’t think that any commenters can truly say if the devices work. I do not see that any scientific experiments were conducted. Were two residences setup with exactly the same conditions both with mice. One serving as the control and one serving as the test? If you don’t evaluate using a scientific method with a control, you really cannot draw a valid conclusion regarding the effectiveness of the device.
When assembling the trap, we recommend applying the bait before the trap is set. After the trap is set, it is designed to trigger when movement is detected on the metal pedal. Baiting the trap before it is set ensures the safety of the consumer.

Convenient Bait Door for Effortless Bait Application With the built-in bait cup, you always know your trap is properly baited. Access the cup by opening the bait door located at the back of the trap. To get started, use a toothpick or cotton swab to apply a high protein bait such as peanut butter or hazelnut spread in the cup. Then place your trap in an area with high rodent activity and turn it on.
I purchased two Bell & Howell devices from Ross Stores for $7.99 each. Can’t say for sure yet whether or not they are working. Just about the time I get comfortable is when I see a new roach. I keep a swifter floor mop handy and smash them to death. The surface is nice and flat, I just have to be quick enough. My next option is to move back to the Northeast where we never had roaches, just spiders and mice.
